Argo diode battery isolators allow multiple batteries to charge simultaneously from one alternator while still maintaining separate battery bank isolation. This protects fully charged battery banks from discharging to depleted batteries yet still allowing incoming charge current. This is achieved by diodes that function as a gate between the banks. Battery isolation is important in marine, RV and generator wiring plans, to prevent household/accessory battery banks from depleting the starter battery.
Argo battery isolators achieve minimal voltage loss by using super efficient Schottky diodes. This means higher voltage output to charge batteries as close as possible to 100%. The voltage drop is 0.3VDC at low current draw and only 0.45VDC at rated output. All models are further fitted with a compensation diode to slightly increase alternator output voltage.

Alternator energize input
Some alternators need DC voltage on the B+ output to start charging. Obviously, DC will be present when the alternator is directly connected to a battery. Inserting a Diode or FET splitter will however prevent any return voltage/current from the batteries to the B+, and the alternator will not start. The new "AC" diode isolators feature a special current limited energize input that will power the B+ when the engine run/stop switch is closed.
Note: All models with "AC" designation include the Alternator Engergize Input. ARG080202000 80-2"SC" model does not. All models feature compensation diode.

Questions & Answers about Victron Argo Diode Battery Isolators:
2012-12-28A shopper asked: Will this work with a single wire Alternator?
Thanks Jim

2013-01-11David Chenette: I do not know, but I suspect that it will. Go to the Victron Argo web site for details.
2012-12-26TOM CASHMORE asked: is the battery isolator automatic --ie when a battery reaches discharge state will the battery isolator automatically switch the alternator to the other battery?

2013-02-16David Chenette: The isolator routes current from the alternator or other source to both batteries, together at the same time (imagine a Y connection with the alternator at the bottom and the batteries at the tops). It's function is to stop any current flow from one battery to the other in case one of the batteries develops a short, for example (no flow from one top leg of the Y to the other).
2013-02-17tom cashmore: hi david many thanks for your email - your argon diode - what current will that handle ? would appreciate your reply, we have a 320 amp alternator ?? --same time could you please check that we are attached to your web site - i guess we must be , but cannot log in , many thanks tom (cashmore)
2013-02-17tom cashmore: hi david - read about your invertors 3000 watt pure sine wave - what type and configuration batteries are used for this ????? would appreciate your email cheers tom
2013-02-17David Chenette: The maximum recommended current capacity is a characteristic of the specific battery isolator model. Typically, higher current capacity will be more expensive because it will require higher capacity diodes and beefier thermal control hardware due to the larger amount of heat dissipated due to the higher current. I do not know about the invertors. I doubt that the battery type would matter whether the invertor output is a sine wave or a square wave, but seek other advice on this.
