KiwiGrip is a durable, non-skid deck coating system developed by New Zealand yachtsmen specifically for use on boats. Most other traction or anti slip coatings are simply repackaged industrial products.
This hard acrylic polymer provides a durable, homogeneous, elastic surface. It spreads quickly and easily. By using one of KiwiGrip's proprietary rollers (sold separately) and by varying application technique, the texture can be adjusted from fine to aggressive for the right amount of traction.
In late 2011, KiwiGrip introduced a new, improved formulation for longer working time and improved color retention. Note: the cream color is now a slightly different shade compared to earlier batches.

How is KiwiGrip different from traditional nonskid coatings?
Most non skid surfaces are created by mixing in a gritty additive during the painting process. This makes it tricky to get the additive to coating ratio right. In addition, the non slip properties wear away with time and use.
Because KiwiGrip is a single part with no additives, it suffers none the problems associated with non skids that use sand, walnut shells, beads, rubber fleck, or other fillers. Anti skid coatings with fillers tend to wear through and the fillers fall out. This makes decks slippery, hard to clean and hard to recoat.
While you can apply it with a brush, there are rollers designed specifically for Kiwigrip. Using these rollers lets you work faster and easier than traditional spraying. The gel finish dries to form tiny peaks and valleys that form a high traction surface impervious to the elements. Fine tuning the aggressiveness and amount of traction provided is as easy as using the rollers to change the size of the peaks and valleys.

Questions & Answers about KiwiGrip Non-Skid Deck Coating:
2013-04-27BILL B asked: How does one prepare the deck? Also my boat is 33ft long how much paint will I need to complete the job?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-17DEREK BROWN: You would definitely need approx 4 Gal. Maybe 5 and on your surface you would need to sand once with 80 grit and then again With 160 grit after that you should be good that will make a great bond. And I reccomend 2 coats.
2013-05-17BARRY HALLSTED: Hi Bill,
The information on this site tells you how much area it will cover. Just measure your boat (L x W) for the area. I'd add 10-12% on top to make sure you have adequate material. It didn't cover as much area as promised for me...
Prep depends on what you are covering. If it is fiberglass gel coat, light sanding to break the sheen and provide a surface that is not oxidized should work well.
I also used Prep All to wipe the area down. It did a great job of removing any additional matter, dust, grime, oxidation, oils, etc.
2013-05-17CRAIG LACKENBACH: I used 120 grit paper on and orbital sander. You don't have to get it smooth, just knock of the old nonskid. I then washed the boat to get rid of the debris and dust. After dry, tape it off then use acetone and wipe down the entire area. I used an 1/8" notched trowel and spread about 2 sq ft of material. It doesn't need to be thick. Actually I put it on pretty thin. Use the special roller and roll out the area. Blend it into previous areas but don't go back after a few minutes because it will lift it and create a more aggressive finish. Work fast but small areas at a time. Don't get ahead of yourself. It held to have someone spread while you roll. In some areas I used a 3" paintbrush to apply the went over it with the roller for the texture. Remove the tape asap. Mine dries in about 20 miniutes and i walked on it with socks and took the tape off. You have to have a knack for rolling and blending.
I applied it to my 40 silverton bow and gunwales in about an hour and have about 2" left in the gallon.
This was my second time using the product. Just did it today.
First time was last year and I did the cockpit.
you can also tint it for a color match. I brought to my local paint store and they tinted it for me.
Good luck
2013-05-18Steve Kennedy: Bill,
You will need at least a gallon and probably more. To prep the old surface, all you need is a very aggressive sanding to rough up the surface to prepare the old surface for the KiwiGrip. Then just apply it as demonstrated. Great product!
2013-05-18TIMOTHY BROWN: Bill,
My boat is about 29 feet (Pearson Triton) and I started out with one quart but needed another quart as well. Your boat would probably need 3 quarts. I bought white qiwi grip and love it. My only regret was that I should have gotten the grey color instead. Make the deck as smooth as possible and make sure that the the underlying fiberglass is cured, dry and dirt free. I painted it on with a brush and needed two coats. Some people roll it on but I'm glad I did it the hard way because the edges look better than just rolling it and on and cutting it in. It is holding up well, looks great and grips very well. On second thought, rolling the paint on may be better if you object to seeing some visible brush strokes on the finish vs roller mat finish. It is good stuff. Good luck! Tim
2013-04-27CHRIS D asked: I saw this used once over a teak deck on a sailboat. I think he put it on pretty thin as I could still see the teak pattern very easy. Has anyone else tried this over a teak deck for sealing it?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-16NORMAN QUINN: not that I know of...
2013-05-16GARY EVERS: Teak is densely saturated with natural oils, that is what makes it an excellent marine wood. KiwiGrip is a water based product. These properties would keep me from attempting to use KiwiGrip over teak.
2013-05-17CHAZ COATS: Chris I would not recommend using this product over teak. I put it on my boat in Sept. 2012 and it is cracking in areas of high stress on my fiberglass decks. I am a woodworker and used to own a 45 ft. sailboat with teak decks. There is no way I would put this product on teak decks. After a year of so, I think you would have a great big 'ol mess.
2013-05-17PETER VANDER ZANDEN: hey Guys, I haven't bought the paint yet as it would cost to much to get it to AU. Even though there is free shipping! I questioned this and JTD has not given a favourable reply. cheers and good luck. OH I suggest that the finish was to thin.
2013-04-24TIM HOEHN asked: What can you tint the color of KiwiGrip with?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-15BRANDAN HOFFMAN: Any paint store or Home Depot paint department can mix whatever color you want from the cards there at the store. You may have to mix it by hand as the kiwi grip is so thick it does mix well in the shaker.
2013-05-15KYLE HAMILTON: We used a Benjamin Moore store to tint it. Any standard paint store tint can be used. Sherwin Williams, Duron, etc.
2013-05-15DOUG GIBSON: I bought the white color and took a cockpit hatch cover with the original non-skid color to a local paint store (not home depot, but experts at a paint store that sells to contractors). They were able to tint and match very close to original after a couple of trials in the store. I don't know the exact type of tint used, other than its for latex based paints.
2013-05-16DAN MOREHOUSE: According to their literature, Kiwigrip can be tinted with the normal latex paint tinting agents. Some paint stores will do this for you and others will not. I had mine tinted at a Sherwin -Williams store; they had to get creative to block the 4 liter can into their 5 gallon shaker, since it's too big for the 1 gallon one, but they figured it out. I had mine tinted a darker shade of gray, since the Kiwigrip standard gray was too light for me.
2013-05-16RANDON RHODES: I had mine tinted at sherwin Williams. Kiwigrip claims any place that tints latex paints can tint it. My color was a good match and the process of getting it tinted was easy. If you look through the FAQ on kiwigrips website there is a thorough explanation of exactly how to have it tinted. For a gallon (4liters) you should not exceed 2 oz. of tint as this will dilute the Kiwigrip and the nonskid result may be affected. My color choice was beige and took about 1.5 oz of tint and the result was awesome. Really happy with the product.
2013-05-16CONRAD WERKENTHIN: I have not personally tried it but I have seen a YouTube video where someone did tint it to match an existing color. I think the video was linked to the manufacturers site, it is a water based product, so it should be tintable.
2013-05-16MARLON REESE: You can go to any paint store with a color sample of what you want and have them match it with any latex color pigment
it only takes a small amount to tint.
Hope this helps you out.
2013-04-24FORD KNIGHT asked: I am thinking of using this on the flooring of my boat. Does it adhere over old oil based paint?
Do the none slip particles break off in little pieces as it is walked on?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-15WILLIAM BYAM: We applied over painted and fiberglass surfaces. One year and still bonded well. The non-skid does not break loose. It is more of a raised thick paint. I've been very pleased with the product and continue to use it.
Bill
2013-05-15CHRISTOPHER FERRO: I can't say, but preparation of the surface is 90% of the game. Sand it down and wipe it down, and it should adhere pretty well. And no, as long as you don't put it on too thickly it won't break off into pieces.
2013-05-16JIM ZYNSKY: you will have to ruff up oil base paint - sand, grind - yes should adhere, depending the roller/brush used - height/thickness of paint could present a problem over time - i keep paint on the thin side and it does well with no breaking away
2013-04-17JACKIE BLACK asked: ONE MORE QUESTION NOT FOUND...CAN YOU MIX TWO COLORS EFFECTIVELY, 50%â??50%, GRAY AND CREAM?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-25DANIEL COLLINS: Yes, but it's difficult since it's so thick. I took a can of white to Home Depot and asked them to tint it for me - it's an acrylic paint so normal latex paint tints work. Don't go over about 5-10% total tint, as the tint thins the paint (e.g. stick with the lighter shades). I used Behr 790E "Subtle touch" and it worked exceptionally well and is the right shade of light gray I wanted. It's been on for three years and I tried to get some of it off an area to bond a new piece of hardware and I had to break out the grinder it was so well stuck!
2013-04-25DAVID JONES: I didn't, but my buddy mixed it without any problems!
2013-04-25NATHANIEL KIDDER: Yes, colors can be mixed, but you have to be careful if you are ever going to try to match the mixed colors again. It requires that you are very precise in your mixes. I would recommend that you consider mixing the entire contents of both cans to maintain an even mix and to be able to effectively match colors in the future. Also, white KiwiGrip can be tinted by a professional paint supplier to obtain even results. Good luck.
2013-04-25RICH ANASTASI: I used the white only. I would think you run a risk of match patch to patch of paint, Good Luck
2013-04-25plwj p: Yes. You might want to mix a thimbleful of each just to check the result before you plunge. I have mixed colors with excellent results.
2013-04-26TOM HENSEL: Yes, you can mix colors. Resulting shade will depend on ratios
2013-04-26PO CHANG: I haven't used the Kiwigrip that I purchased recently yet. I do not feel competent to answer your question.
2013-04-26NICHOLAS ALDOUS: Yes,
You can mix the colors to your desire.
2013-04-26HARRY CAPORUSCIO: It's a paint so you should have no problem in mixing different colors together. However, it is very think so you need to be sure to mix it completly so you don't have streaks. Maybe a drill mixer. Also, be sure to mix up all you need at once just in case there is a change in batches.
2013-04-17JACKIE BLACK asked: CAN KIWI GRIP BE ROLLED OVER A LIGHTLY TEXTURED GELKOTE WITHOUT SANDING IT OFF?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-25DANIEL COLLINS: Yes, absolutely. Just clean the surface well with a good scrubber (I used a green scotchbrite pad), let it dry, and coat. It doesn't hurt to do a Xylene or Acetone wipe-down first to help remove any residual mold release or wax on the surface.
2013-04-25WILLIAM DUDLESTON: Hi Jackie B
The short answer is YES. This stuff is very easy to apply. For best results spread out an area about 18" x 18" using a tile spreader then using the textured roller roll out to the requires finish. Start by getting an even all over finish then lightly finish of with the roller. Remember the harder you roll the more rough the finish. If you not happy with the results just re roll until you get the required finish. Maybe start by applying a thin coat with the spreader if the coverage is not to your liking apply a little more and re spread and just roll to the required finish. FYI I applied kiwigrip to the cockpit seating area and am very happy with the finish after two years. I chose a white finish which is quite difficult to keep clean so a light grey or cream would not show the dirt so much.
good luck
Steve
2013-04-25MICHAEL SHIELDS: Yes, you can rofl a light coat on and still have the texture, or roll it on thick and texture with the included roller.
2013-04-25ALAN BINGHAM: Yes, I have used it on my Seawind catamaran over the textured gelcoat with good success. Make sure the surface is clean and has a key - maybe a light sand. My gelcoat was oxidizing so I did wash and scrub it first. 3 seasons and as good as new.
2013-04-26MAURY KEISER: Very short answer. Yes. Recently did decks on a 1977 Bristol 29.9. Light sanding to rough up and thorough cleaning was all that was needed prior to application. Highly recommend Kiwi Grip.
2013-04-26WILLIAM NEAL: Not tried that, so not sure. But it sticks to most anything. So I would de-wax/de-grease gelcoat thoroughly, then sand lightly with 100 grit sand paper. Clean off all residue from the sanding, then apply the Kiwigrip.
2013-04-26SETH BOSCH: Yeah it's pretty thick, so that should be fine.
2013-04-26MICHAEL BEUKEMA: Yes! It is also a great cover-up for any deck repairs. Just scuff it up to get any waxes off and clean
2013-04-17A shopper asked: can i put this directly on fiberglass?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-18BOB CARTER: I did and it worked fine
2013-04-18MARK PINCUS: I believe the answer is yes. I cleaned my decks with acetone first and then applied the paint to the decks - my decks were already painted though, so not directly on the gelcoat, but it works either way,\.
2013-04-18DAVID WYLER: I don't know. I'd be inclined to direct that question to the manufacturer.
2013-04-18JAMES BOOTH: Yes. You can write to Kiwigrip for confirmation, but when I did Willy replied that it doesn't even need primer.
2013-04-18DANIEL SEEFAHRT: I put it on a 2 part polyurethane primer. I would have some paint type primer coat. Gelcoat would work also. I am not sure about fiberglass, I would want it sealed with a 2 part primer.
2013-04-18DAVID KEYS: Yes, this would be the same as applying to gelcoat. As long as the surface is properly scored, it should work.
2013-04-18KERRY BRIGGS: After I used west system epoxy over fiberglass, 2 coats, I scuffed it up with 120 grit sandpaper, cleaned, then applied Kiwi Grip... Worked really well, and appears to be quite durable...
2013-04-18PAUL MATTHEWS: Yes
2013-04-18BOB MORIARTY: Yes. It is very sticky.
2013-04-18LESLIE DEJESUS: You sure can. I had 45 year old decks with the non-skid worn off down to fiberglass material in some places. I washed it, rinsed it, taped off the area, and put it on per the directions.
Do be aware that it sets up QUICKLY and if you're in the sun and it's hot you should only do about 2 square feet at a time. Still, you just move on to the next 2 sq. ft. and do a little roll-over with the roller to blend the areas.
They always say to pull the tape immediately. If you can, do so. I couldn't always access it so we let it go until the next day. Some areas required a knife slicing down the tape line, but even that was no big problem.
In areas that didn't need as much non-skid, like on the cockpit seats that have cushions, I saved paint by not using the fancy roller, just put it on with a foam brush.
I even used it over non-skid material fiberglassed to the deck many years ago. Worked there, too.
One other notation: Doing the non-skid was the most important. I left the rest of the cabin top areas for later (yet to do) and figured that the raised KiwiGrip will negate the need for more tape: it's already raised and will form a barrier to the paint I will apply to the rest.
2013-04-14TAMMY BUCCIERI asked: can you apply kiwi grip and paint the entire deck so it is one color?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-16MAURICE TAMMAN: I applied it to nearly all my desk (all of the nod-skid areas) ... It looks great though it should be applied in small areas so that when you move from one adjoining area to the next the previously applied area is is sufficiently wet to merge seamlessly with the next.
Cheers,
Mo
2013-04-16ALAN VEENSTRA: not sure of your question.
You can match Kiwi to nearly any color (use White as a base) and have it mixed at Home Depot.
I would not recommend Kiwi as a regular paint to match the non-skid.
2013-04-16ROBERT BURKE: I don't see why not. Keep in mind though that KiwiGrip goes on very thick, so you will use a lot of it. It might not be the cheapest way to go.
2013-04-16ROBERT DUNCAN: If you are referring to painting the entire deck with Kiwi Grip, sure you can. But even though it is all 'one color' I think you will find it not as aesthetically pleasing as you would think. I would suggest painting your deck with a standard deck paint, and then taking that color to a paint mixer (HD, Lowes, ACE) and having them color match the Kiwi Grip (buy the white Kiwi if you chose to do this). Personally, I really like the two tone decks...it lets me know what has 'grip' and what doesn't without to much study.
2013-04-16DEREK BROWN: If you are buying multiple gallons yes make sure to mix how ever many gallons you get ......mix together this is called boxing and it will make sure you get even color on the whole deck
2013-04-16BENJAMIN IPOCK: AS LONG AS IT'S CLEAN, I DON'T SEE WHY NOT.
2013-04-16DAN LEARY: Maybe. It would be difficult to do an entire deck with no breaks. I found that only a fairly small area could be done at a time and the edge has to be wet or you may get a visible "line". My deck is broken up into 14 separate areas of non-skid that I did one at a time.
Be sure to apply evenly and use the loopy roller as instructed. I found that if I went over too often with the roller it changed the final texture which is noticeable and made it appear slightly lighter or darker. I strongly recommend not applying in direct sunlight. Good luck!
2013-04-16GARY EVERS: Yes, absolutely.
I used Kiwi-Grip on the entire inside of a Boston Whaler center console. I applied Kiwi-Grip to the floor as well as the sides. You will receive a roller with the product. If you roll it a little, you will get a slight texture finish (I did this on the sides). If you roll it a lot, you will see a non-skid type texture build up. (I used this method on the floor and step treads.)
Best of luck with your project!
2013-04-16BARRY HALLSTED: Absolutely! In fact, that is probably the ideal scenario. I masked off a few areas to leave some contrast lines on my boat. It looks great and is holding up very well so far...
Best of luck to you!
2013-04-17GAVIN WINSHIP: I believe that would be easy to do. I painted the foredeck on my boat, it looks good.
2013-03-29A shopper asked: Has anyone used this on a fiberglass swim platform? How does it hold up with exposure to exhaust and fuels?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-31DAVID KESTER: I have used Kiwigrip on steel decks and fiberglass decks. I had no problem with diesel spills. However, exhaust gasses are a different beast. They tend to permeate gelcoat and they might do the same with Kiwigrip. On the other hand, it's very easy to put a thin coat of Kiwigrip every year. BTW I had opened cans of Kiwigrip last 2 years or more.
2013-04-03Thomas Pelsue: I have not seen it on a swim platform, but know of boats that have it in high traffic areas that get wet for several years, and it has held up really well. Does the exhaust soil the platform now? Not sure there is a nonskid that would work if it gets sooty.
2013-04-03EDMUND KALIN: It's all in the prep of the fiberglass. It will definitely hols up, as it did for me. It's a swim platform so be careful of the stipple you end up with. If overdone, just a light sanding, to keep the feet comfortable.
2013-04-04JIM ZYNSKY: I have not used it on fiberglass. I have used it on concrete exterior deck. It has held up well with contant traffic across it. Exhaust should not be a problem - fuel may shorten life - diesel fuel will brake the bond between the paint and the fiberglass. Roughing up the fiberglass would be key to having a long lasting non-skid surface.

2013-03-26NATHANIEL KIDDER: I have always used either Barkeeper's Friend brand cleanser or baking soda with water and a scrub brush.
2013-04-16BARRY HALLSTED: Keeping it looking clean has been a bit of a challenge. I have 7 kids, so my first step is "nobody gets off the boat until it is spotless!" That said by the end of the season it needs a bit more work.
I have used a watered down mix of Purple Power and a scrub brush. We scrub and immediately wipe it up with old towels. It is certainly work work than the original gel coat finish, but well worth the effort.

I rolled a first coat with a 4"x1/2" whiz roller removed the tape then recoated using the whiz and finished with the texture roller (availabe at [@] for half the cost) The texture roller. worked great. I got a finer anti skid and was able to press the roller in firmly without compromising the coverage. In doing 2 thinner coats I achieved the same coverage rate and got a finer texture.I would not try messing with getting a texture on the first coat. Dries too fast. Texture becomes spotty and coverage is compromised.

We did interior sole, and full deck on a Quest 30 raceboat. Product is very easy to apply. The grip is excellent. Their rollers break down very fast and do not last you must buy extras. Removing tape and setup are key to a good job. Now with a month of use we fine the product rubs off very easy with any line running over it. We will put Interlux Brightside in those areas and million dollar tape (teflon chafe tape). Would I use it again, I think so but will know better after a season. I am between recommending it and not recommending it time will tell.
I re-covered all the non-skid areas on my 1979 Cape Dory 27 in one day. Masking the edges of the areas actually took about twice as long as laying down the paint. But, for my efforts, the boat looks great!

This is the only paint related product I have ever used that a complete idiot can do. Ive never seen this product in my area but have seen it all over the internet and decided to use it on my boat as a tester/demo for customers and friends. I love the fact you can adjust the texture. I purchased the white and I really like the tint. It has a nice gloss and goes well with any true white. My boat has a very big antiskid pattern molded into the boat similiar to diamond plate. I cleaned the area to be coated, hit it with a wire brush, taped off the area to be coated, spread the paint with a squeegy, and simply rolled it out with KiwiGrip's roller. Fantastic finish and grip, not to aggressive that it hurts bare feet, but super grippy. The roller is great and you cannot see any overlap marks. I really like this product and in my oppinion it looks better than traditional paint with anti-skid additives.

We used kiwi grip on our 1966 Pearson Wanderer. It came out better than we ever expected. The old non-skid was in very poor condition but the kiwi grip covered all the problem areas. Clean up is easy as well. My wife did the application and she had very little painting experience. Folks at the marina were very impressed with the results.

I found it works best if the ambient temperature is between 65 and 72 F . The cure time is super sensitive to the relative humidity and I would recommend that you have a good six hours for cure if there is any chance of dew as this will have an adverse effect on the finish.
Key is to also lay on a coat that is thick enough but not too thick. It is easy to get the hang of it and easy to go back and fix if you get it wrong.
Water clean up is GREAT!
As with any painting the finally results are heavily dependent upon your surface prep and masking. It is essential that your rough up gel-coat or LP painted surfaces to get good adhesion, it tended to stick fairly well to other painted surfaces even without sanding (but sanding is highly recommended.)

Deck was previously painted over gel coat with rubberized paint which got sticky during summer and held dirt. Awful experiance since I couldn't remove it since it plugged up any abbrasive used on it. Even used brake fluid, paint remover and paint thinners but couldn't remove product due to rough surface. Used KiwiGrip which covered a multitude of sins. Looks great now. Easy to use.
