Questions & Answers about Polished Brass Closed Base Cleats:
2013-03-12BUCK DEAN asked: To set those fasteners should the hole be drilled or tapped?

2013-03-14RAMESH CHITTAL: Buck D,
I bought those cleats for entirely different application. I am building my own 8ft long 2 feet wide and 2 feet high media cabinet. These will be used as handles on both sides for easy lifting. And I plan to put brass nut and bolt through the sides.
The smaller version of these cleats will be the handles for my cabinet doors, fastened in similar manner.
I am sure it did not help you much, not being a boat owner.
Sincerely
Ramesh
2013-03-14LESZEK CHROSTOWSKI: I did not use them on a boat either...
2013-04-06KEYES LLOYD: Drilled; if I understand the question correctly.
2013-04-08DOUG BROOKENS: Hi Buck,
If you are mounting these cleats on a wood deck, then I'd use #7 flat head brass screws and drill a pilot hole with a 5/64th drill.
Hope that helps, Doug
2013-03-09BUCK DEAN asked: I want the 3 in. cleats. Which fastener should I use?

2013-03-12WERNER BELISCH: Hi Buck,
It really depends on where you are attaching the cleat. In my case I was going through a 1/8th plywood top and placed blocks below that to make up about 3" total depth.(a Home made canoe). If you are using it on a side rail or a thick solid spot on the boat.....I would think 1.5 " (or more) of fastener below the bottom of cleat should do it. If your situation is fiberglass or other composit material I can help you there too.
2013-03-12JON SABALINSKI: It depends on your application. Mine was purely cosmetic. If yours is functional, it needs to go thru the substrate and into the framework.
2013-03-16Jim Walther: I used the "3" cleats on an 8' dingy. I think the 4" would be the smallest to use on any boat.

2012-05-09GEORGE2 EBERSTADT asked: Do these cleats need to be polished to keep their shine? If they tarnish, what color/texture does the tarnish take on? Many thanks.

These cleats do not tarnish. A soft cloth once in a while is all you will need.

Ask a lot of questions about what screw size to use. They are not clear on this for length and will not give you a good recommendation for the proper screw.
