Rule automatic bilge pumps have an internal computer chip to cycle pumps every 2 1/2 minutes. The pump runs for one second and shuts down if no water is detected. If water is detected, automatic pumps sense resistance at the impeller and run until water is removed. No float switches required.
500 (Rule 25S), 1100 (27S), 1500 (51S), and 2000 (53S) gph pumps handle the spray and rainwater that can quickly fill a small or open boat. 12 volt DC. Minimal power use or current draw in sensing mode. All pumps are completely submersible, rust and corrosion free, and ignition protected. Built in strainer base snaps off for easy cleaning.

Questions & Answers about Rule Automatic Bilge Pumps:
2013-03-29JOHNNY WILLIAMS asked: Can I leave this pump on my swimming pool cover during the off season so it will automatically remove rain water?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-29J L FULLER: Yes it will but you can't permit the pump to freeze. You also have to keep the plug on the cord out of any water or it will short. The automatic functiomn on these pumps is very sensitive and cannot handle power surges, etc.
Hope that helps.
2013-04-23DAVID WOEHRMAN: Will work fine as long as the water doesn't freeze.
2013-04-23ROBERT REAGAN: pump if fully automatic. I would think you could leave on swimming pool cover. Its 12 volt so you would need to hook to battery or transformer.
2013-03-19DENISE CELLINESE asked: Will the pump activate at less than 3 inches of water?
+Expand Answers
2013-03-22JEFF SMYTHE: yes, down to about 1/2"
2013-03-22JERRY KARNES: Yes it will if you mount it flat with the hull. In my boat there is a slight V at the bottom so I placed it on a flat piece of marine plywood that I epoxied in place so it will not start pumping until the water is about 1.5 inches deep. These really are excellent pumps. Installed both of mine over two years ago and they work flawlessly.
2013-03-23STEVEN ZARECK: yes, but not much less than that. Mine runs in a little less than 2 inches
2013-03-23VINCENT RITCHIE: I don't know, but I believe the specs that come with pump can tell you that. Good luck
2013-03-23DAVID WOEHRMAN: Yes
2013-03-23JEFFREY KESTER: I installed mine and found the automatic feature didn't work. Since this was one of three bilge pumps in my boat, I didn't bother to pull it back out. Because of this, I have no idea how much standing water will be there in automatic mode.
2013-03-24THOMAS KOEHL: Mine activates with about 2 inches, but that's about the backwash from the hose line. My pump is the 2000 that automatically samples the water level every few minutes. It's been in service for a year and so far so good, however I have a very tight boat.
2013-02-17DON YOUNG asked: which pump would work best in a crossbase?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-20VINCENT RITCHIE: Sorry, don't know what a crossbase is.
2013-02-20ROBERT FERNANDEZ: I have two RULE pumps in my boat, They are a quality product. However this is the first automatic bilge pump that I purchased and as of yet I have not installed it.
2012-11-27A shopper asked: What's the head limit on the 500gph unit? Ten feet? More? Less?
+Expand Answers
2012-11-29Nathan Fournier: Well, in a 12v system at 3.35 feet it will pump [310gph]; at 6.7 feet it will pump [180gph], I wouldn't recommend going another further than that, if it's a vertical hose set-up to reach the thru-hull instead of let's say a 20-30 degree angle from the pump location then you shouldn't be going over 3-4 feet for a little 500gph pump. In general, for a 10ft set-up I would purchase the "RUL-27s" 1100gph or larger, thank you.
2012-09-21A shopper asked: IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH UNIT TURNING OFF?????
+Expand Answers
2012-10-11THOMAS KOEHL: I purchased the Rule 2000 and have had it installed in my Westsail 32 since June 2012. It functions well although it took some time for me to gain confidence in it's on/off cycling. I wired it as instructed, directly to my main battery busses, and it works fine. Time will tell as to the durability. It's power draw seems miserly, although I have a very dry boat and have only about a quart of water in my bilge sump. -Tom
2012-10-15JERRY KARNES: Not in the year or so I have had them installed in my boat. No real power drain I can attest to, even when we have hard rains for days on end.
2012-06-24A shopper asked: how easy is this pump to install?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-07WILLIAM W PARKER: The pump is very easy to install. If your model does the automatic sampling at a few minutes interval, pay attention to the correct wiring. Hook it up backward will fry the chip and kill the pump.
B
2012-07-07VINCENT RITCHIE: Very easy. Especially if you have easy access to your bilge area.
2012-07-07WILLIAM PICKENS: Very easy --- almost automatic.
2012-07-23MICHAEL HINKSON: The pump works flawlessly, no overnight battery drain. However one has to attend to the strainer frequently. I attend to mine at least once weekly to prevent clogging.
2012-07-23DANA WILLIAMS: Very simple installation easy directions with it
2012-04-20BOB F asked: I bought the rule27s for the auto feature which I thought was a internal float switch which would turn on the pump when there was water present not to turn on and off every 21/2 minites. If I hook it up manual will it start when water is present or do I have to install a float switch???
+Expand Answers
2012-04-20BARRY MACFADDEN: If you have it set for manual, it will just run continuously. I'm not sure about the float switch, but it sounds like it would make sense. I just leave my set on the automatic because it was easy.

2012-04-19M BILETCH asked: info says it is 12 volt. Does hat mean I need a big car battery?? how big is a 12v battery?

2011-09-28STEPHANIE BAER asked: how do you determine what size pump you would need..?
+Expand Answers
2011-10-09TOM BECKSTEDT: I determined the amount of water it pumps and my boat size. I have a catalina 22
2011-11-08JERRY KARNES: Just get the largest one you can afford. When you are 120 miles or more offshore like we often are you sure don't want to have a leak and find out your bilge pump will not keep up with it until you can stop it. Bye the way, multiple small pumps are not better than a single big pump and multiple big pumps are best of all.
2011-09-08RUSS SCHMIDT asked: At what level of water does the pump on?
+Expand Answers
2011-09-08PAUL DOZIER: Russ,
The pump does not check water levels. It cycles periodically (every few minutes) and pumps out any water present. If no water is present, the cycle is brief with no measurable drain on your 12V system. As a small spray pump, I love it. I always have a bigger, float switch pump as a second pump in case of a gusher.
Read the specs, because I seem to remember models that actually adjust the test interval based on prior activity, but I don't think this one does.
Cheers
2011-09-08VINCENT RITCHIE: Russ,
I have the 1500 gph pump. As advertised, it does turn on every 2.5 minutes for a second to see if there is a need to pump. From the design of the pump it looks like there needs to be at least 3/4 of an inch of water in the area of the bilge where the pum is before it will start pumping. I don't know if the water requirement is the same for all the pumps.
2011-09-08TOM BECKSTEDT: I dont know I havent had any water in my boat yet for it to work.
2011-09-08JEFFREY KESTER: I do not recall for sure, but I would estimate 1/2".
The pump I purchased was supposed to be both automatic and manual, but it never worked in automatic. As I had disposed of the packaging and invoice I was unable to return it.
2011-09-10GERRY VANDERSANDEN: The pump willl automatically come on every 2.5 minutes ( I believe) "searching" for water. when the water level reaches aprox. 1.5 - 2.0 inches it will stay on until the level has been reduced to aprox. .5 inch. One thing to know about these pumps is that they will cycle every 2.5 minutes whether there is water or not. I have a dripless stuffing box in my 38 foot beneteau and it seems wastefull to contiually cycle when majority of the time there is no water. Cycle run time is aprox. 1 second.
I have used a RULE automatic bilge pump for years.
I have owned several of these and have had no problems such as Fred describes.
The pump cycles periodicly to sample for water and than shuts down. In doing so, it uses very little current.
I find this much more reliable than a float switch, which is prone to hanging up.
The only thing I can think of is that Fred had a small leak, causing the pump to constantly be pumping out his bilge, leading to a dead battery.

Purchased this pump last season. I have a small boat 25' every 2 1/2 minuets you hear the pump cycle on. Try setting your sleep cycle to this pump. It does not always turn itself off. When we launched the boat this year it ran my cranking battery down to nothing. I have cleaned it several times but it continues to run after cycling. This pump is located in the aft bilge and not very accessible which adds to my frustration. I paid about $175 for this pump and am changing it to a non automatic wihth a separate float switch (Water Witch electronic).

Piece of junk

Comments about Rule Industries Rule Automatic Bilge Pumps:
After taking great care to ensure the correct installation of this product and sealing all electrical connections last May, the 2 1/2 minute automatic timer failed after about 2 months. So we used the unit manually. This fall I left the pump in the boat while occasionally charging the batteries so that I could quickly bilge rain water. It died in December. What a pathetic piece of junk.

Replaced similar pump with a float switch. Solved the problem of the pump running dry when heeled on a tack. Go a few hundred miles... pump fails.
New problem is 3 failures of the fully automatic pump. Fails off 2X. Fails on 1X. I installed a parallel larger pump for several reasons, but I still would like this pump to work as primary, low flow, bilge pump. Last failure (Failed ON) was three weeks after install.

Comments about Rule Industries Rule Automatic Bilge Pumps:
I recently installed this pump in the back of a small outboard-powered skiff. I chose it over float-switch operated pumps because I didn't have much room. Also, looking at internet ratings, these automatic pumps seemed to be consistently higher rated than similar pumps with float switches, leading me to surmise that float switches are more problematic. This pump has 3 wires, so it can be wired to come on continuously, or for the characteristic on every 2 1/2 minutes to "test" for water. I only wired the intermittent circuit, although I see myself wiring continuous mode in the future to force it to run, for example during clean-out of the boat after use. The pump works very well. The slight noise when it cycles on is noticeable, but not objectionable.
I will only occasionally use it to keep the boat pumped out while unattended. I have not yet used it long enough to judge long-term reliability.

This is a GREAT pump. I bought two to replace older and much larger pumps with external float switches. Since this one cycles, and detects water, it is trouble free. I have a leaking outdrive boot, and a stream of water is leaking in. This pump not only keeps up, but cycles off when it catches up. Yes, I do plan to replace the leaking boot next week.

Comments about Rule Industries Rule Automatic Bilge Pumps:
These pumps are the best idea ever! Forget broken and/or unreliable float switches. The pump cycles regularly (and you get used to the quiet sound), staying on only if it detects resistance - water. The other review here is a small boat, obviously, with no charger. Pump uses only a very small amount of amps, and if you're hooked to shorepower it's a no-brainer. I LOVE these pumps! So will you.
