Questions & Answers about Waveblade Power Barnacle Remover:
2013-01-09A shopper asked: Can this tool be used to remove bottom paint build-up?
+Expand Answers
2013-01-09ERIC ASCOLI: I suspect that it would not be efficient at removing bottom paint.
The tool is designed to work against a hard edge and to break it by
its fast pulsing. On paint it just would glide on the surface.
2013-01-09HENRY MCKEVITT:
No I found it will move anything attached to the paint but not the paint
2013-01-10JOHN PERDUE: no. it's not really a power scraper, like the video and picture of tool tend to indicate. it's more a high speed reciprocating blade that relies more on virbration against the barnacle's adhesive layer to effect a fatigue crack in it, if that makes sense to ya. so what you do is hold it up to the base of the barnicle, gently pushing against the barnacle and it causes the barnacle to let go after awhile. that while is only 5 seconds if the boat has bottom paint on it and the barnacle is not more than 1". if no bottom paint then it's another story although smaller barnacles no more than 3/4" do come off, maybe 10 seconds each. some faster. in your case use a grinder/sander with an 8" pad and 60 grit stick on discs. ok, maybe 80 grit if it's a bottom paint that comes off easy.
2012-09-11BOB HERRMANN asked: Can this be used to also remove barnacles from my dock and seawall?
+Expand Answers
2012-09-12JOHN PERDUE: no. this is why. the wave blade works, with barnacles up to about 1". It's ability to vibrate the barnacle off the surface depends on the surface. the videos shown in the product demonstration are of a hull that has bottom paint applied. bottom paint inhibits the barnacle from anchoring. It makes a big difference. My boat didn't have bottom paint, only a barrier coat of epoxy. thick epoxy. It worked on the ones that were small pretty well. Up to about 3/4" it would cause them to come off, but leave a footprint so to speak. It didn't happen fast, like in the video. It's harder to use the product when you are floating in the water next to the hull, with waves lapping and sharp barnacles. Plus you have to let it cool down every thirty minutes. I didn't clean that much in thirty minutes. I think it is mainly intended to be use dry dock, or by a diver with air, and assuming the surface is a coat of bottom paint.
2012-09-12STEVE GROOVER: Hey Bob,
The Waveblade works great on all of the hard surfaces on my boat without any damage...even bottom paint.
I'm not sure what your dock and seawall are contructed of...but if it is not a hard surface, I wonder if the occilating action of the Waveblade may "dig" into softer surfaces like wood.
Hope this helps!
Steve.
2012-09-12CHRISTY WHEELER: Actually, I haven't used it yet because my planned haulout was delayed while I completed some topside painting. However, having watched a demo and from the manual, the answer would depend on how rough the surface is. The action depends on a relatively smooth surface like a hull or shaft under the growth otherwise the blade could dig into cracks or catch and be damaged. If the seawall is one of the composite plastic type, it seems to be feasible. If rough wood or concrete I think you're going to risk damaging the blade since the instructions and demo are explicit to let the blade do the work and not push hard on it.
be happy to send an update in about a month after my haulout

2012-09-12HENRY MCKEVITT: Used it several times and it has reduced the time I spend cleaning the bottom of my sailboat in haft.
2012-09-13WILLIAM PERRY: Bob-I would guess that the wave blade would work on pilings and seawalls just can't imagine why you would use it for that when a long handle floor scrapper would work saving ur waveblade wear and tear. It is by far the best hull barnicle remover I've ever used. I love mine and treat it like gold, using it on pilings and seawalls to me would keep me awake at night.
2012-01-23A shopper asked: are they really waterproff . i would like to use it underwater ?
+Expand Answers
2012-01-24Rui Fernandes: Yes they are. It's submersible up to 15 ft.
It takes just a little time using WB to master getting great results. Just let the WB do the work, do not apply to much pressure. There is a learning curve with using it. Just vary the angles and directions while moving over surface. This is the key to getting the WB to remove growth fast and with best results. It beats using a hand scraper.

Comments about Waveblade Power Barnacle Remover:
This tool is a must have if you need to clean props in the water.I just cleaned a large 3 bladed prop with 1.5" thick fouling layer over the whole prop. The job was done fast with every bit of fouling removed and with little effort. In fact the tool works best when you do not push on it. Just a gentle touch and 3 inch square hunks of barnacles start falling off.

Comments about Waveblade Power Barnacle Remover:
I had let the running gear on my 47 ft. twin screw former LaFitte shrimp trawler slide until it was heavily fouled with half inch barnacles, calcarous tube worms and especially flat oysters up to two inches in diameter like those that encrust pilings and seawalls here in South Florida. As a former commercial inspection and ship hull cleaning/prop polishing diver, I was skeptical at first that the Waveblade would really be effective at removing such growth but guess what, it was very effective at removing even the tough oysters. My buddy who was helping by hand scraping with a putty knife would motion me over to remove stubborn oysters with the Waveblade that he had been beating on with the putty knife. I did put a hose clamp over the switch and tightened it until the unit came on and stayed on. The Waveblade ran continuously for over two hours underwater with no problems. Once you catch on to relax and let the tool do the work and that less pressure is better and find the best angle for the blade you can really effectively remove even heavy fouling. It's fantastic at cleaning keel coolers and the spaces between the cooler fins. Using the Waveblade I got out shells and barnacles that have probably been there for years that the boatyard had missed. Waveblade is powerful enough to do the job without the worry of doing any damage. The tool more than paid for itself the first time out. There is a sense of satisfaction watching all the crud come off fairly effortlessly. I'm guessing it's sort of an ultrasonic vibration action along with the mechanical scraping of the blade that removes the encrustation. It sure beats putty knifes and scrapers.

Comments about Waveblade Power Barnacle Remover:
At first I thought yeah right to good to be true but what the heck. I tried it out and love it for the running gear. I'm not wild about the power switch but I tied an elastic sail keeper around it and put the knot over the button. That solved that problem and my hands are glad of it.
How to use this product: I called the company because I couldn't figure out how to get the bases of the barnacles off like on the video. They said people try to use it like a regular scraper and push too hard causing the blade to stall. That was me. I figured the harder the better. I tried barely touching the barnacle base with the corners of the blade like they suggested and it worked like a charm. Now if I come up against something that is really tough, instead of pushing harder I let the blade run against the edge of the growth and it comes off. Changing how steep the blade is to the boat or moving the blade to a different part of the growth also helps. It's like the tool finds a weak spot and the vibration pops it off. A light touch really is the key.
I've got no bases on my hull, I won't have to haul out this year and as far as I'm concerned this baby has paid for itself. Great gift!

Comments about Waveblade Power Barnacle Remover:
Requires power button be continuously depressed, which does begin to get very tiring after about a 10-15 min period.....BUT the bigger issue is the power constantly seems to shut off while in use, even though the power button is depressed. The unit will turn on, start to glide over the boat hull, removing everything in it's path, then as great as it's working...it just turns off, as if either the unit is overheating or the power button is not being fully depressed, while in fact, if pushed any harder, the device might break.
I will follow up with results of my attempted warranty replacement. But for now, I'd be leery on this product, as it appears the simple, yet required power button method was lacking attention when designed.
