Choosing the Right Reflector For Your Boat
The S-2 and S-4 models are designed to be positioned high in the rigging of sailboats. They can be permanently mounted to a shroud or backstay, or be hoisted on a flag halyard. The S series have a compact shape for minimal wind resistance and to avoid interfering with sails. They are ightweight, durable and doesn't make noise moving around.
For best possible performance, mount your Mobri radar reflector in a vertical position as high as possible above the deck in the shrouds away from the "shadow" of the mast. A minimum of 13 ft. (4m) is recommended.
The aluminum reflecting surfaces are arranged at 90 degrees and staggered at 45 degrees at varying angles to each other to produce a very stable return on opposing boats' radar screens. For sailboats venturing offshore, we recommend two units mounted on port and starboard to allow for heal.
The M-2 and M-3 models are designed for use on powerboats. Their mounting brackets allow for easy removal when the reflector is not in use. The best performance is achieved when mounted in a vertical position as high as possible over the deck. It should be mounted on the coach roof, targa or a tuna tower, away from the "shadow" of other equipment such as antennas.

Questions & Answers about Mobri Radar Reflectors:
2013-01-24A shopper asked: I have a small center console boat that I run on the east coast. I have to run in the fog from time to time. I would like to be seen even if I can't see them. Is this the right product for me? My boat is'nt tall enough to have anything in the 13ft off the water hight.

2013-01-24SPENCER BAILEY: It would be much better than nothing while operating in the fog!
2013-01-25JIM RUSCH: These reflectors work line-of-sight, so the sending radar has to be able to "see" this reflector. It will certainly work on your boat, and it doesn't take up much room at all. But I'd recommend having one on board, and maybe having a boat pole or PVC pipe set up to elevate this reflector as high as possible above the water, just on those foggy days when you actually need it. The higher, the better so oncoming ships can see you at a greater distance and either manuver away, or sound a fog horn to warn you away.
2012-01-23A shopper asked: How and where is this reflector mounted?
+Expand Answers
2012-02-03JIM RUSCH: I have my Mobri Reflector mounted on the port shroud, between the middle and upper spreaders (tall rigged sloop), on an "as-vertical " section of the shroud, so it's as high as possible, and presents the most reflective area to any incoming RF energy from another ship's radar. I have it mounted using vinyl tape wrapped over heavy-duty tie-wraps. The tape protects any sail contact with the tie-wraps. I chose this method, so when I haul the boat out and de-step the mast in the winter, I can easily remove and store the Mobri Reflector.
2012-02-14J BLACK: According to the experts, radar reflectors should be hung at least 13 feet above the water. On a sailboat, that normally means a shroud. On a conventional rig, the uppers or lower shrouds should work equally well, just make sure that the reflector is out of the way of the jib leach while close hauled. With a large genoa, that would likely mean to attach to the lower shrouds. On my rotating mast trimaran I will attach to the upper diamond stay, well above 13 feet from the sea. Although I haven't yet read the installations instructions, I presume that a lacing with 3/32 Dacron cord where multiple wraps are taken around the stay before passing through the mounting holes in the end of the reflector will work perfectly. A square knot to fix the lacing in place should be adequate. A drop of epoxy or CA (crazy glue) on the knot wouldn't hurt either.
