Interlux Brightside Polyurethane

Interlux Brightside Polyurethane is the most technically advanced one-part polyurethane available. It contains unique additives that make cleaning easier and help reduce stains and abrasion.

Brightside uses Polyflow 4000, a unique polyurethane resin, which yields excellent flow and leveling characteristics as well as incredible abrasion and chemical resistance. Brightside also takes advantage of the latest in ultraviolet technology which insures longer color and gloss retention.

Together these technologies create a one-part polyurethane which gives the look of a two-part polyurethane with the application ease of a one-part enamel.

I painted my San Juan 24 with Brightsides. It was in the summer, and it went on better by thinning it with their recommended thinner. We rolled it with a foam roller, then tipped it vertically with a foam brush (discarding it for a new one each quarter of the boat). We did three coats, sanding with 320 grit in between. As it dried, it pulled out the brush strokes a great deal, although not 100%. This is looking at it close up. 5 months later, people walking the dock still tell me how pretty that paint job is. Also, we did two coats of the recommended primer. Get advice, take your time, and the name of the game is preparation, preparation, preparation. You can get excellent results with this product.

I have quite a bit of experience with paint, both marine and house paints. I am very pleased with Interlux products. I have a wood boat that is in the water year round uncovered.

I used this paint primarily because of the high gloss value, plus it is getting more difficult to find traditional oil base marine enamel in stores.

The paint goes on smooth and produces a very nice finish, just a little thining, roll and tip, and your all set.

2 years ago I used off white and blue. I have a friend that used yellow. I noticed that after 8 months there was a very noticeable color fade with the blue and the yellow; the off white was difficult to tell, but all lost gloss, and the cabin top was worse than the other areas, more sun Im sure.

I used traditional Interlux yacht enamel for all the white on the boat, that held a much nicer gloss over the same time period.

The next year I experimented with the 2 paints, traditional oil based enamel blue and off white, and polyurethane blue and off white. Yes the Polyurethane lost more gloss and a lot more color, under the same conditions with the same prep. I was much happier with the enamel.

I have heard reports from other wood boat owners that it also tends to crack. Maybe because its a harder paint? Maybe better on fiberglass?

My opinion, good paint, but I much prefer traditional oil based enamel, primarily for color rentention. But there are very few colors available, try Epifanes for variety.

I have had the same experience with other brand Polyurethanes, Petit Easypoxy brown, not just Interlux.

I have used the polyurethane inside with great success.

          Best Uses

Comments about Interlux - Brightside Polyurethane:

I've used Interlux Brightside single part polyurethane on my mahogany mast and boom. The product is durable and looks fine at a distance. The first coat goes on easily over Interlux pre-kote (primer). Successive re-coats are difficult. First, the product sets up very quickly, and loss of flow leaves a rippled effect in the surface. Second, it is difficult to see misses, particularly on a bright day. Application must be as fast as possible, and a wet edge is essential to a fine finish.

Comments about Interlux - Brightside Polyurethane:

I am using Interlux Brightside to recoat worn areas of the non-skid surfaces on the decks of my Gulfstar trawler. The off-white color is a close match to the original gelcoat. I use a three-inch foam roller and a small disposable plastic paint pan, so clean-up is accomplished very quickly. Since the non-skid surfaces are slightly higher than the bordering smooth deck area, I am able to skip the time-consuming process of applying masking tape around the edges to be painted, if I am careful.
