2013-03-06A shopper asked: Which size is adequate for a Honda 60hp?

2013-04-18JACK ROCHESTER: the s3240 seems to be the right size. i'm using it with a 90 hp merc.
2012-10-17MICHAEL HELMAN asked: my filter element won't unscrew from my bowl, it just spins when I try to loosen it....any ideas how to remove?
2012-06-14JEFF MCKEE asked: Do I need an inline vent between the water separator and the outboard? I think my current setup is causing my engine to flood.
+Expand Answers
2012-06-14RUSS SEFF: I don't think so. My fuel system is plumbed as follows. Fuel line from vented tank to racor fuel filter intake. From the racor, my fuel line runs under my deck to the primer bulb which is mounted vertically. From the primer bulb tthe fuel goes into my outboards engine mounted fuel filter.
The only thing that should be vented in your fuel system is the tank so that you don't create negative pressure (a vacuum) in the tank as your engine consumes fuel. I have never heard of an inline vent in a fuel system for an outboard. You don't want air in the system at any point.
2012-07-22BYRON COBB: There should not be a vent in the fuel line. Too much risk of a leak if it malfunctioned. If your engine is carburated it may be bad floats.
2012-07-23PATRICK DIRCKX: No i do not believe so, they recommend to use a check valve if the filter it higher than the fuel tank so that it doesnt drain back to the tank. I also recommend putting a shutoff valve before the filter also so that if you place the filter lower than the tank that you can shut it off from flowing that way also. And just incase you need to shut the fuel off.
This filter should not make it run richer. The system will flow the same as it did before. The filter is just gonna let the water settle down to the bottom. Are you sure that it wasnt running rich to begin with. I would take it to a small engine place and see if it is jetted correctly if you do not know how.
2012-07-24BARBARA VADAS: There is no vent as part of the Racor filter, so I am not sure of your fuel line configuration. If you tell me or draw the fuel line diagram, I can tell you if you need a vent. Usually, however, you don,t.
2012-01-23A shopper asked: Is this unit suitable for a suzuki DF115 motor in a saltwater application? Is the metal stainless or aluminum?
Thanks.

2012-01-23JOHN KITTREDGE: The bracket is painted aluminum. I boat mostly in freshwater so I can't say how it will hold up to salt. The manufacturer should be able to tell you what size filter is appropriate for a 115.
2012-01-24RORY RICH: Mark I run the one I bought in a DT85, but freshwater application. The main housing is aluminum, so I am not sure about holding up to saltwater conditions unless it is in a dry place.
2012-01-30CHRISTOPHER SMITH: I have two of these units on different boats in saltwater and neither has corroded. I 'm pretty sure that they are aluminum but the coating Racor uses on them is very durable. Just make sure you get a unit with at least the minimum gallon per hour rating required for your engine. My 115 etec uses the 90 gph.
2012-03-14RUSS SEFF: The filter is suitable for the DF115 as it is a 10 micron filter that is capable of flow rates up to 60 gph. I doubt that a DF115 would ever exceed 15 gph at wide open throttle, maybe 20, but nothing approaching 60.
The metal bracket is die cast aluminum.
2011-11-18A shopper asked: does the glass bowl ever fill up with good fuel?
+Expand Answers
2011-11-21JOHN KITTREDGE: The bowl is plastic, not glass, and yes it fills with good fuel. The idea is that, since water is heavier than gasoline, it settles to the bottom of the bowl where you can see it and use the drain valve to remove it.
2011-11-23RORY RICH: Yes the bowl would theoritically be filled at all times with good fuel. It will trap water in the bowl if it is present. Since water sinks in gasoline, the good fuel passes through the bowl and out the filter.
2011-12-31CHRISTOPHER SMITH: Yes, the bowl acts as the bottom portion of the filter and is designed to hold fuel unless the filter encounters water which is heavier than fuel and will settle to the bottom where it can be seen and safely drained away.

2011-09-25A shopper asked: Can I replace an R120 S diesel filter with a gasoline cartrige?
2011-09-10RUSS SEFF asked: Is this a 10 micron filter?
Comments about Racor Gasoline Spin On Fuel Filter/Water Separator:
Unit comes with a 10 micron filter and is not suitible for use as a suction side filter with electric fuel pumps and carburated systems. This application requires an 80 to 100 micron screen. Use of a 10 micron filter causes cavitation in the pump leading to premature failure of the pump.

Comments about Racor Gasoline Spin On Fuel Filter/Water Separator:
Easy install, you'll need large washers for the mounting screws or bolts. While expensive, the visual bowl allows for frequent fuel checks. One incident of ethanol fuel separation will pay for this filter 20X or more. I've been there.
