TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits

TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits include everything you need to tackle epoxy repairs and fiberglass projects. This complete project-ready epoxy kit includes: TotalBoat 5:1 epoxy resin; your choice of either fast or slow TotalBoat hardener; a set of metered mixing pumps, 2 stir sticks, 2 mixing pails, and a pair of latex gloves.

Pumps are color coded to match the resin or hardener cap for convenience. Mix one full pump of hardener to every one full pump of resin. Our calibrated 5:1 pumps ensure a perfect 5:1 mix ratio every time.

System sizes: Group Size A = Quart Kit; Group Size B = Gallon Kit

Note: Don't need the pumps, gloves, stir sticks, or mixing cups? Gallon size kits are also available with just resin & hardener included. This 'no frills' version makes sense if you already have TotalBoat pumps and simply need more epoxy.

I bought Total Boat to do a range of boatbuilding and repairs, as well as general woodworking. I expect to give it a thorough tryout.
So far, I have only used it to laminate stems for a small canoe. The first one didn't set at all, my mistake. I didn't get a full pump on the slow hardener, so I did a different mix with the fast hardener, and re-applied and re-assembled. It turned out OK. The second stem came off the mold strong and solid after an overnight set. The third one just de-laminated at the bend, most likely the white oak is so porous that it sucked up all the epoxy. No. 4 is still on the mold, and after 8 hours the epoxy is tacky, slow hardener at 80º F.
I checked the pump output, it's 25ml resin. 5ml hardener. Open time, so far, is much longer than expected. Total Boat sets clear, and is quite strong, just takes a long time to get there. Would more hardener accelerate the reaction? Does anybody know?
At this point, I am not as impressed as I would like to be. And, I would be hesitant to recommend Total Boat to a friend. Still, there's a learning curve with everything. I'm willing to keep trying. Since this is a new product, and Jamestown is pushing it, we could use more customer support.

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

This product is very forgiving for novices like me. The material goes down very well, and adheres great to a variety of surfaces. Had good luck with both verical and horizontal applications. I used it with both fiberglass matting, and kevlar with equally great results. I'm an amateur at glassing, so I had trouble with the cure time: about 20 minutes for a batch of about 12 oz at 75 degress - so it can sneak up on you if you lose track of time. Helps to have somebody mixing for you while you spread.

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

We have used this epoxy on numerous occations for an adhesive and a water proofer. I have found that the epoxy once cured ( a few days) leaves a waxy film on the surface of the epoxy. Anyone have any thoughts on why this is the case. We are using a West systems 5:1 pump which is the same ratio that total boat uses.

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

I was a novice at using epoxy resin. I closely followed the instructions provided, used the included mixing pumps, applied the resin where it was needed, and got perfect results every time.

I used this resin to bond large areas of gelcoat that were failing on my 45-year old sailboat's deck and cabin. The results were almost too good to believe.

I can't vouch for this epoxy in other uses, but for my application, it was perfect. And the price is more than fair.

          Well done, Jamestown!

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

I bought this product to use in building a boat which I've been planning. After doing a lot of research on how to use different products I settled on this one. I'm glad I did. The containers are proportioned to be easy to use and take all the guesswork out of an already sticky process. I am grateful to have a product this easy to use. The product works well and sets up good and hard and is easy to sand and finish. I would recommend this to others.

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

The Resin and Hardener delivery pumps make it foolproof to mess up the mixture. The resin pump is slow to deliver because of the thickness. I am rebuilding my transom and stringers and am a little impatient when it comes to making the quantity. Otherwise, I will be using it for other applications because of its performance.

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

I have used polyester laminating resins on other small projects, automotive etc. and find that epoxy is much easier to use and provides a less brittle final product. Very different cure times and viscosity with epoxy depending on temperature (slow hardener). If you want thinner epoxy then warm the resin before mixing. I used a hot water bath. On super hot days I worked in the shade or immersed the mixing pot in ice water. With the pumps you can mix in any clean container. I saved up plastic milk jugs.

I have used the product to repair ribs and deck damage on a Y class scow. It is easy to work with. I have thickened it as needed with good result. Beads and chopped glass work well in it. The slow hardener is great. I take my time and get a great deal done with each mixing.

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

For the last 7 years, West Systems has been my epoxy of choice on two sailboat projects. This year, economics drove me to look for something that would prove lighter on the pocket book and I chose Total Boat Epoxy From Jamestown Distributors: also, I ordered the fast hardener which I prefer in most conditions.
After using Total Boat this year, I am switching to it permanently. Unless an even better deal would present itself in the future.
Epoxy and fiberglass work is something I've just learned in the last seven years. Unpredictable flash/hardening times and differing final tensile strengths was something I lived with, presuming my learning curve was the problem.
This year since I have received and started using the Total Boat System I feel like this product has "professionalized" me. The product is very predictable. In 80 and 90 degree weather (almost all of our hot summer) it has proven to me that it is a consistent product, something I did not have before.
My choice of thickeners has been colloidal silica and chopped strand fiberglass. Total Boat epoxy is the best I have used with these items combined.
                  Very accommodating.
Obey the label instructions and you will be satisfied with the results.

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

Although this product is clearly indented for boat building and repair, this is an all around great multi-use product. I bought this for use with my prop making (as it requires a paper frame to be re-enforced with a fiberglass frame). I first started out using polyurethane resin, and as such, was limited on having to work only outside and in good weather. Due to the low VOC this has compared to polyurethane, I can use it instead with a box fan, regardless of what the weather is doing or the time of day.

The pump system is amazing, as it allows me to quickly mix a small or large batch as needed with no lose of product due to the pot time. The pot time itself is great, as you can choose between a 10-30 minute out pot life depending on the part B you choose.

The only issue I have is that it is a tad more messy then other people make it out to be. This is probably user error more so then anything else, but non the less, it is a factor.
