TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits

TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits include everything you need to tackle epoxy repairs and fiberglass projects. This complete project-ready epoxy kit includes: TotalBoat 5:1 epoxy resin; your choice of either fast or slow TotalBoat hardener; a set of metered mixing pumps, 2 stir sticks, 2 mixing pails, and a pair of latex gloves.

Pumps are color coded to match the resin or hardener cap for convenience. Mix one full pump of hardener to every one full pump of resin. Our calibrated 5:1 pumps ensure a perfect 5:1 mix ratio every time.

System sizes: Group Size A = Quart Kit; Group Size B = Gallon Kit

Note: Don't need the pumps, gloves, stir sticks, or mixing cups? Gallon size kits are also available with just resin & hardener included. This 'no frills' version makes sense if you already have TotalBoat pumps and simply need more epoxy.

I use Total Boat epoxy for bonding wood and filler during the restoration of a Harkers Island Net Boat. First time using this product but have had no problems and it performs as well as any of the more expensive epoxies on the market.

I purchased 5:1 epoxy kit with pumps to repair delamination on my Hobie 16. I liked the fact that one pump resin and one pump of the hardener gives you a 5:1 ratio without having to measure. Luckily I did a small test batch to make sure the epoxy would set up correctly. Well, the test batch took over an hour to gel and over 2 hours to harden and still there was oily residue so it seems that it did not set up correctly overall. I then decided to add more hardener with another test batch. Well that batch set up too quickly and with generated alot of heat. Finally I found the right mixture which was 2 pumps of resin with about 1 1/2 pumps of hardener. It set up correctly and hardened within about 15 minutes. I repaired half of my one haul but I don't like the fact that I have to "wing it" to get the proper ratio. I feel like I wasted alot of product and money in having to experiment to get it right. I am not sure if i have faulty pumps or materials. I of course bled the pumps to rid of any air pockets. I could have used the supplied mixing cups but I would much rather make several small batches and avoid the epoxy setting up before I am finished injecting it. It worked great after injecting it into the hull. It is strong stuff and my hull is now rock hard. I could have done without having to experiment to get it right thus wasting product and money.

Comments about TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits:

Usual fast service. Have been using this product to laminate some frames for a new glued lapstrake boat drawn by Joel White. Even the slow hardener sets pretty quickly in the 80 degree heat. I have been laminating 2 laminates at a time which is all right for a retired hobbyist, but may slow down someone who needs to get more done in a shorter time. A friend has suggested putting the resin and glue in the refrigerator before mixing. Haven't tried that yet. Another possibility is to use West System ultra slow hardener, but I would want to check with the Total Boat tech people before doing it. All in all, this is an excellent product at a great price. I recommend it highly.

Make sure the epoxy has been sitting in 65 degree or more for a while before using so it pumps out of the container easier.
Easy to use, 5 pumps of epoxy to one pump of catalyst.
The slow cure catalyst is just that - very slow curing, best for laminating.
For quicker repairs, get the faster curing.

The kit contained everything I needed together with the G10 and release fabric I purchased to complete the repair to the deck on my sailboat. Working with epoxy from underneath the deck is always a messy proposition but the TotalBoat epoxy with fast hardner and some thickener worked well together to accomplish my task with out any problems.

This product is very forgiving for novices like me. The material goes down very well, and adheres great to a variety of surfaces. Had good luck with both verical and horizontal applications. I used it with both fiberglass matting, and kevlar with equally great results. I'm an amateur at glassing, so I had trouble with the cure time: about 20 minutes for a batch of about 12 oz at 75 degress - so it can sneak up on you if you lose track of time. Helps to have somebody mixing for you while you spread.

We have used this epoxy on numerous occations for an adhesive and a water proofer. I have found that the epoxy once cured ( a few days) leaves a waxy film on the surface of the epoxy. Anyone have any thoughts on why this is the case. We are using a West systems 5:1 pump which is the same ratio that total boat uses.
