TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits

TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Kits include everything you need to tackle epoxy repairs and fiberglass projects. The complete project-ready epoxy kit includes: TotalBoat 5:1 epoxy resin; your choice of either fast or slow TotalBoat hardener; a set of metered mixing pumps, 2 stir sticks, 2 mixing pails, and a pair of latex gloves.

For convenience, pumps are color-coded to match the resin or hardener cap, and calibrated at a precise 5:1 ratio for a perfect 5:1 mix every time. All you do is mix ONE full pump of hardener to every ONE full pump of resin.

System sizes: Group Size A = Quart Kit; Group Size B = Gallon Kit

Note: Don't need the pumps, gloves, stir sticks, or mixing cups? Gallon size kits are also available with just resin & hardener included. This 'no frills' version makes sense if you already have TotalBoat pumps and just need more epoxy.

Work in 240 ml batches and keep it stirred regularly while working. 200ml of resin to 40 ml of activator was a good ,economical working batch. If you don't pay attention the mixture will crystalize exothermically within 15-20 minutes of mixing. Mixes well with West 404 for reinforcing wood seams between plywood edges. I have used Gluvit and Amazing Goop with mixed results. I am extremely happy with this product and substituted it in my work for West Systems mainly because of its price.

I purchased 5:1 epoxy kit with pumps to repair delamination on my Hobie 16. I liked the fact that one pump resin and one pump of the hardener gives you a 5:1 ratio without having to measure. Luckily I did a small test batch to make sure the epoxy would set up correctly. Well, the test batch took over an hour to gel and over 2 hours to harden and still there was oily residue so it seems that it did not set up correctly overall. I then decided to add more hardener with another test batch. Well that batch set up too quickly and with generated alot of heat. Finally I found the right mixture which was 2 pumps of resin with about 1 1/2 pumps of hardener. It set up correctly and hardened within about 15 minutes. I repaired half of my one haul but I don't like the fact that I have to "wing it" to get the proper ratio. I feel like I wasted alot of product and money in having to experiment to get it right. I am not sure if i have faulty pumps or materials. I of course bled the pumps to rid of any air pockets. I could have used the supplied mixing cups but I would much rather make several small batches and avoid the epoxy setting up before I am finished injecting it. It worked great after injecting it into the hull. It is strong stuff and my hull is now rock hard. I could have done without having to experiment to get it right thus wasting product and money.

The parts I coated inside went very well, high build with a minimum of coats.
It's winter time here and I trying get my boat read for spring so on the vertical trim parts, I coated outside, I did get a lot of run, probably my fault for using it below 50 degrees. The flat horizontal surface it was great.

Where I use my home made driftboat itis shallow and rocky, so I recoat the bottom every year. The pumps included in this kit made for very quick mixing and the epoxy went on very nice. I would have given it 5 star but i did have a lot of runs over the edge. Now I did use it during cool weather so this may have been the cause of runs. I use my 3 times a week spring, summer and fall so it's recoat in winter or not at all.

I used this product to lay fiberglass cloth on a pulling boat I am restoring. It works into the cloth smoothly.., and a little thickening with Totalboat microballoons on the second coat makes sanding easy. Having laid a fiberglass deck on my 1964 40' sloop among man, many other fiberglass repairs, I find this product equal to West epoxy and totally satisfactory. I hope you'll make a clearcoating epoxy next!

Without directions--label on containers says 5:1--mistakenly thought that meant 5 pumps of resin to 1 pump of hardener--BUT pumps are calibrated to automatically give 5:1--had a bit of a mess (ie nothing was drying) till I read the product description on line again
