Questions & Answers about Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating:
2013-05-14A shopper asked: Can I use this product on a houseboat deck made of plywood?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-14Evan Russell: Shouldn't be a problem at all. Might want to use a primer first but I have used it on plywood with no problem at all!
2013-05-14TERRY ABERNATHY: Sorry, I am not able to help. I used it on a deck surface that is fiberglass with gel coat.
2013-05-14LUIS CANCEL: The answer is yes, as long as the wood is prepared and the top coat is applied first then it adheres well.
2013-05-14THOMAS FULTON: Yes, depending on what kind of plywood was used to make the deck . If it is good marine ply it should be OK. If it is fur/spruce marine ply you might want to fiberglass it first. Fur/spruce marine plywood tends to get surface checks and cracks. If you want good information join the Wooden Boat Forum and ask more detailed questions there. Its free and you'll get lots of good info.
2013-05-15Kevin Gardner: I don't see why not. you'd have to make sure to prepare the deck properly. But it's an excellent product for that type of application.
2013-05-15IAN WILSON: Yes, I believe it can, although the wood will have to be sanded and primed with two coats of Prekote primer beforehand. In my case it was applied directly to pre-painted fiberglass in good condition and the end result appears to provide a very satisfactory non-skid finish.
2013-05-15JERRY MALTESE: I can't answer that for sure. I only used it on a fiberglass sail boat that unfortunately sank from a storm last year. So I don't even know how long it would have lasted. Sorry.
2013-04-28A shopper asked: Is it suitable for inside floor of small aluminum boat?
If so, does metal needed to be primed (etched) first?
2013-04-24LEE ARKUS asked: on interdeck is a primer needed?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-14DAVID ANDERSON: I applied it over sanded wood and it has stuck.
2013-05-15JAMES MCCOY: Lee,
I can't really answer your question. I've used it several years, but never as a first coat. I've been very happy with it as a second, third, etc. coat. Sorry,
Jim
2013-05-15JODY DESHON: Hi Lee. I didn't use any primer before application. I used on an aluminium pool deck Worked great looks great just rough enough to prevent slipping
2013-05-15JEFF HIGGINS: I did use a primer and I'm very happy with the results. The boat has been in both salt water and fresh and I haven't had any problems yet.
2013-04-17A shopper asked: i have a gibson houseboat with deck damage going to repair with new wood and fiberglass need to recoat to match deck is this a good product to use?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-18ALAN HILLS: This productlooks like what we used to call a "sand finish". A sand finish looks like you painted something and sprinkled sand on it while the paint was still wet. If you are trying to do a repair that you want to match an existing nonskid pattern molded into the gelcoat, this product will not duplicate the pattern. I did not like the way this looked when I was done and ended up painting over it with Brightside enamel with very satisfactory results.
2013-04-18TIM GRACE: Greetings.... I used this product to go over my existing non skid on my deck. I really like the product but if you are starting with a smooth surface I might suggest a different product even though this one does have a gritted paint..... Hope this helped.
2013-04-18DOUG JOSEPH: I have had great luck with this coating. I used it to resurface the fiberglass deck and cockpit floor on a 1968 vintage sailboat. It's held tight and has not faded after three years of hard use. Good Luck!
2013-04-18CHARLES SAAR: Yes, it's easy to apply and cleanup is simple enough with mineral spirits. You might have apply two coats. I only put on one coat, last year, and some spots are showing, through, now. Overall, I recommend it.
2013-04-18JAMES DAVIS: Easy to apply. One coat made our deck look like new.
2013-04-19CHRISTIAN TRUELAND: As long as the deck is clean and free of oil or other contamination interdeck is a great product. I have used it on a few of my boats and it holds up well and is not hard to clean.
2013-04-19ROBERT LYON: I used it for a non-marine application, I have a fiberglass shower which developed a crack that I epoxied over, then painted over the whole bottom pan. This product was easy to apply and has held up very well in this constantly wet situation, but it sees no UV exposure. I plan to apply it to the non-skid sections of my fiberglass boat this summer. Good luck getting color matching with existing deck though, that is likely to be tricky.
2013-04-20BRIAN WOODS: This is agreat product to useot will definitely work for you. It applies easily and covers well. I used a primer but don't rember the brand. The product is so strong it really bonds. I used two coats a few years ago on my entire boat deck. Full hot sun exposure. Still looks like new. Great product. Brian.
2013-04-20DAVID OTIS: I have a 32ft. 1970 all wood Carver with vinyl deck covering. I painted the old vinyl with Interdeck and it worked very well. It is not high gloss, it has a slight matte finish that is non-skid. The best part - it's as tough as nails. I don't think you can wear it off at all.
2013-04-25ROBERT LIND: This is an excellent product you will not be dissapointed. This is the industry leader non-skid deck coating. Go ahead and add a bit more grit to the paint if you feel it is necessary. I just bought two more quarts today for abother boat. robert
2013-04-12PATRICIA CARGILL asked: What do you use to fill cracks and holes in wood boat?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-18TIM GRACE: I would not suggest using this for filling cracks. Great for going over existing non skid fiberglass.
2013-04-19ROBERT LYON: Use an epoxy-based filler, then paint over.
2013-04-20DAVID OTIS: West System epoxy
2013-04-10A shopper asked: is this paint UV resistant?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-11CHARLES SCHICK: Yes. I live in New Mexico and have applied it to surfaces exposed to the harch UV light we get here at 5,000ft plus above sea level. I have not observed breakdown or yellowing in the past 12 months it has been exposed.
2013-04-11RICHARD SHAW: I do not know if the paint is uv resistant. I applied it to deck of Catalina 27 last summer. It may have faded a little. But not chalky. Quite satisfied. Rick Shaw
2013-04-18TIM GRACE: U bet it is... I used the product last summer and hope to get 3 - 4 years out of it and the deck sees 300 days of sunshine each year.
2013-04-20DAVID OTIS: Three years so far and the answer is yes.
2013-04-08LEE KING asked: I removed the carpet from my boat and want to apply Interlux Interdeck non-skid to the floor. Do I need to remove every last bit of carpet adhesive from the floor, or just most of it? This will include aluminum gas tanks on either side of the boat, which were also carpeted over and have a thin layer of adhesive on them. Can I just paint over this stuff?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-11Kevin V: You need to remove all the old adhesive for the paint and primer to properly applied.
2013-01-29A shopper asked: what is the square footage coverage?
+Expand Answers
2013-01-30NOEL FERRER MARTINEZ: I bought a quart and used it to give my 14' boat several coats; it is 4' wide so that would be about 56 square feet. Once finished I had about 1" of paint left in the can (still in the shed).
It did a really good job, but I just didn't like the color (yellow) so I bought some gray paint that went over the non-skid, which still retained its properties.
Hope this helps.
2013-01-31JODY DESHON: Can't give exact sq ft my application was on a pool deck 15X30 oval X14 in wide good product no peeling good texture
2013-02-03RICHARD SHAW: I used a quart of Interlux Interdeck polyurethane paint on the deck of my Catalina 27. I put 2 coats on the main deck not the cabin top. I used a sponge roller and brush. After a year it is holding up well. Only negative is the cream color is more yellow. Few people like it.
2012-09-15DAVID OCONNOR asked: I am looking for something to put on my front porch floor which is treated pine decking boards with a clear high gloss sheen finish and can it be put on top of a water seal?
+Expand Answers
2012-09-17BARRY SHREVE: I haven't used the deck coating on such an application, but I would give the surface a rough sanding with 100 grit sand paper, wipe it with mineral spirits and give it a shot. We painted our boat's deck that had a rubberized compound on them and the paint adhered just fine.
Barry S.
2012-09-17L.H. TURNER: This is a white paint. Do you want your porch floor white? If so, a light sanding and it should do fine. However, I have not tried this.
2012-09-17SCOTT HARTMAN: It sticks to boat gel coat just fine
2012-09-17MARK ROWE: On a Porch deck I would say no. It is a very durable paint but is subject to black sole skuff marks and takes a lot of scrubbing to get them out. Durability it is great and it is tough, but absorbs the black from say hiking boots.
2012-09-18JEFF PENNINGTON: Yes, if you rough it up and use a good primer. I put it directly over a gel coated sailboat deck, and it held well, but would have better with a primer.
2012-09-18JODY DESHON: I would strip current finish then apply I used on pool deck looks great a bit thick and pricey but very durable good product
2012-08-01A shopper asked: Hello,
I have 800 square feet of balcony deck to do. How much primer will I need and how much non-skid deck coating will I need. Of course! What is the price?
Thanks
Bernie

I used Interdeck in accordance with the instructions on the can. I first prepped by sanding, applying Interlux PreKote and waited over the weekend. Then rolled a coat of Interdeck on. With the daytime temps in the 90s, I waited a day for drying as prescribed by the can but it wasn't dry. After 3 days it was still soft in spots. It took a full week for the paint to dry in 90 degree temps. After contacting Interlux, they decided I need to scuff the paint as it may skimmed over too quickly to release some of the solvents. A second coat was required and the drying process was over a week. I'm still not confident if a slid an ice chest across my cockpit that the paint wouldn't come up. If I had it to do over again I would use a two part epoxy paint so that the curing would at least be a chemical process. The one part polyurethane is a risk in my opinion and I would not recommend it. I'll have to wait and see how well the paint holds up but for now I think I would spend the money for a better Interlux product or a different brand.
Comments about Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating:
Used this to renew non skid on a very old (1970 something) sailboat. Went on very easy and looks great. I mixed 1/2 gt of gray with 1/2 qt of white for a lighter gray. No problems.

1 qt only covered 1/2 the insides of a 17' daysailer (Thistle). That was on top of primer. Still, it's good quality paint and a nice no-slip surface. Easy to do.

Bought this inadvertainly as grey paint for the inside of a rowboat. A very good mistake, it has no shine, which make it very good for a long row on a sunny day. Flat finnish is ideal.

Comments about Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating:
I have used Interlux products for many years on an exterior porch deck that was covered with a non-slip fiberglas coating back in 1988. Every 8 to 10 years it needs a refinishing job and I recently applied Interdeck as the finishing system. Product went on perfectly and dried to a finish that looks brand new. The Interlux products really stand up to severe conditions (bright sunlight @ 6700 ft during the summer followed by 8 to 10 feet of snow every winter). With a new application of Interdeck, I'm ready for winter #22 !!!

Comments about Interlux Interdeck Polyurethane Non-Skid Deck Coating:
I have spent a fortune on products for my 1978 Catalina 25. I went to the store and told them my problem. My non-skid areas were rusty looking. I had tried to clean them and they weren't coming clean...they were actually worn out. They sold me about $50 of cleaners. None worked. I went back and again said "the non-skid is worn out" so they sold me another product. A non-skid paint. I told them I didn't want a sand-type paint...I wanted the same rubberized coating that was there currently. They assured me it was great and I'd be happy with it. I put a small portion of it on and it was like sand/cement. I wiped it off to find that I just made my boat look 100 times worse. I tried this stuff lastly and it made my 30 year old boat look BRAND NEW! I can't recommend this stuff enough. The only thing I need to find out is how long it lasts. That was a LOT of taping to do for something that may only last a few years.
