Sikkens Cetol Marine Gloss is a durable clear gloss protective wood finish, developed as a topcoat for Cetol Marine, Cetol Marine Light and Cetol Marine Natural Teak. Gloss does not include UV protection, therefore it is recommended to first apply coats of either Cetol Natural Teak, Marine or Marine Light and then use Gloss as final topcoat for best appearance to achieve a natural varnished wet-look with depth.

Questions & Answers about Sikkens Cetol Marine Gloss:
2013-04-23A shopper asked: If you put Cetol on, when its time to have it redone can you varnish over it? I'm thinking if you did like the Cetol look . Thanks
+Expand Answers
2013-05-14ROBERT HARRISON: I don't know the answer to that specific question. You could contact the Sikkens technical people via their website. They are helpful.
I am beginning my third year with Cetol Natural Teak, and I am very pleased with the appearance, the durabiity, and the ease of maintaining it.
2013-05-15GREGORY NIEBERDING: I think with a thorough sanding you would have no problem putting varnish over Cetol. But that kind of defeats the purpose. I love the look of Cetol on my teak.
2013-05-15PETER CHANDLER: I don't know. I have never tried. It seems to me that if the Cetol needs to be redone, one would need to take the project down to bare wood anyway, which I have done prior to changing to varnish. No problem replacing Cetol with varnish if you " wood" the project first.
2013-05-15FRANK MCCAMMON: The Cetol doesn't look as good as varnish, however, in my experience varnish affords little protection from UV and other elements. Varnishing over the Cetol might defeat the purpose of that product; not having to scrape it off every year. If the wood is to be exposed, I'd be concerned that the varnish would not adhere well to the Cetol and would deteriorate even faster. Cetol's gloss version might achieve the same aesthetic effect as the varnish.
2013-04-01JIM POWER asked: What to use on a partially submerged swim platform on a ski boat?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-05GREGORY NIEBERDING: I only used this on a teak handrail around the back deck. You need to sand after applying, so partially submerged would be a problem.
2013-04-05GERALD ROUNSBORG: Sorry, have never used it on anything left in the water long term. Works super if only temporarily wet down.
2013-02-16DAVID KREISS asked: If you use Cetol "Light" do you have to apply more coats to get the same protection? If so are you just better using the darker Cetol versions with two coats?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-22RAY BILBREY: one clear coat is never enough u need at least two or three, sorry but i made the same mistake, thanks rwb
2013-02-22Alan Boese: The "light" is simply a lighter shade, but with the same protection. If you read the can, it states that " Cetol Marine Light is identical to the Cetol Marine but formulated with different pigments to produce a lighter amber appearance on wood". They are simply giving you a choice. Great product. I bought it for my West Greenland paddles, but also used it for outdoor Adirondack chairs which still look fantastic after two brutal seasons.
2013-02-22DEANNA WHEELER: Hi David K,
No, you do not have to apply more coats of the "base"(the color coat) they have 3 now, Teak, light & original, in all actuality, the teak & original apply to be the same color, they have an orange undertone. The light is more of a muddy yellow. The secret to it if you are using it for the base coat under the Cetol gloss is to apply thin coats, it is just so the gloss adheres to the wood, you do not want it thick or too many coats of the base, it gets too dark and you might as well paint your wood brownish orange. You want to see the wood grain under it. The trick is to apply at least 6 coats gloss and it is great that you do not have to sand between coats altho I do sand before applying the last coat. Check it starting at around 9 months the first time, when it dulls or shows signs of wear, clean well to remove dirt & oil etc., scuff with a very fine scrub pad, I use the ultra fine from 3M. apply 3 more coats gloss & you are good for another year. As you build coats the time will come when you may actually skip almost a year. I have boats that Cetol looks every bit like varnish. Do not let it get to the point you have to use base coat again unless a repair is necessary & then just do a small patch & apply like stain to match the existing area. Good luck. Personally, I won't use the light, it is kind of a "pukey"color if used too much. If you are only using the base coat and not top coating it with gloss, the original or teak color is better. Hope this helps.
2013-02-23GARY THOMPSON: Dave,
To get the maximum protection you must apply three coats of any of the Cetol finishs.
I also top it with three coats of the gloss and get a good 12 months of service.
I hope this is of help. Good luck with your project.

2012-07-09A shopper asked: can you apply cetol over varnish ?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-11DEANNA WHEELER: No. You can however apply varnish over Cetol.
2012-07-12FRANK OTT: no, you have to sand the varnish off
2012-07-28BARBARA HONCHARSKI: Everything we read said NO. I stripped all my teak down to bare wood. I used a product called Citristrip, which you can get at lowes or home depot, to remove the old varnish. This product is great, not very caustic and removed the varnish easily if you are patient. It needs time - 30 min- to work. I then cleaned with xylol, the cheaper but equivalent version of interlux 216, then I sanded it lightly and cleaned it again with xylol. I get SEVERAL compliments of my teak. I put on 2 coats of marine teak and then 2 coats of gloss. I will never go back to varnish again. The cetol does not lift like varnish. I scratch it each year and put a new coat on the exterior teak. I have a trawler with a lot of teak, but it does not take long and it looks beautiful. I sing Cetols praises wherever I go and I don't work for the company.
2012-06-01DENISE MENDES asked: What is the alternative for the brush since I am doing it over a big deck and to apply with a brush is not a option. The area is over 400 Sq feet. Can it be applied the same way we apply polyurethane? Thanks for the help.
+Expand Answers
2012-06-05DAN RODER: Sure you could use a foam roller, also you may want to add a touch of thinner on final coat to let the Cetol melt out better. I sometimes lightly sand between coats if you should get any unwanted dust particles if you are outside. Just don't add too much thinner or any thin spots will get a little cloudy. I use 5 coats for outside wood work, such as on a swim rack . Good Luck!
2012-06-05GARY THOMPSON: Afoam roller follwed by a brush to tip off or level will work. Just controll the amout you apply, as puddlesare hard to sopp up and youant a wet edge t aflooded surface. Good luck with the project. --- Gary
2012-06-05Alan Boese: Denise:
I have 2 concerns - one is that the gloss should only be used as a top coat over at least 2 coats of regular Cetol; and second, that the product cautions that the gloss should never be used on a deck because it becomes very slippery when wet.
Have you applied base coats of regular Cetol Marine?
Alan
2012-06-07DEANNA WHEELER: I would not recommend using Cetol gloss on a deck, it is too slippery. I wouldn't even recommend the satin(base) for a deck either as you will have to apply more coats yearly and it will just add layers of the orange color thatin the end will be really dark orange over time. If you are determind to use the gloss, be sure to put at least 2 light coats of the base(satin) under the gloss. That in itself is tricky to do on a very large area without blotching. You can use a foam roller to apply the gloss but be sure to add a small bit of thinner as you go to keep it flowing smoothly. I personally would tip it off with a large foam brush so it lays down smoothly, the trick is to keep putting small amounts of thinner in it for smooth flow & just be sure to put several extra coats to compensate for the thin coats. Good luck
2012-04-06PETE WILLIAMS asked: What is the shelf like of partially used can of cetol gloss ?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-06DON LAWRENZ: Depends on how well you seal the can. Generally a few months before it skin's over.
2012-04-06GREGORY NIEBERDING: It's so funny you asked this question today. I just picked up my wood transom pieces this afternoon from my woodworking guy. He said once this Cetol Marine Gloss was opened, it began to get gummy after about a week. So, if you are using this product, it seems to be important that you complete your task within a week or the remaining product becomes useless.
The manufacturer should package this in a container that would allow you to squeeze out the air. It might extend the shelf life of the unused portion.
That said, we LOVE this product. The ease of application and final result are well worth it. Just use it all up within a week. Hope this helps.
2012-04-06JIM MCCARTHY: MANY YEARS. I JUST GOT THROUGH DOING SOME BRIGHTWORK WITH CETOL LIGHT AS WELL CETOL GLOSS THAT I HAVE HAD IN THE BASEMENT FOR FIVE YEARS. BOTH HAD SKINNED OVER SOMEWHAT, AND IT WAS NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE SKIN, BUT THE PAINT UNDERNEATH WAS QUITE USEABLE. I ADDED A LITTLE THINNER TO BOTH, BUT VERY LITTLE, AND AM QUITE HAPPY WITH THE RESULT. THIS IS GREAT STUFF ESPECIALLY FOR SOMETHING THAT WILL BE OUT IN THE WEATHER. HOPE THIS HELPS.
2012-04-06Alan Boese: I would recommend that you call the technical support number:
Interlux Technical Service Dept. at 800-468-7589
2012-04-06RICHARD LAREAU: I used cans over 2 year old. I would try it on a test piece of wood frist to be sure.
2012-04-09GERALD ROUNSBORG: We have kept it for up to 2 years, with no serious problem.
2012-04-16Michael Reardon: Pete, you can use a product called Bloxygen to extend shelf life once can has been opened. It blankets the surface of remainder in can with Argon to prevent skimming over. Just squirt in and quickly close lid, should yield much longer shelf life.
2012-01-20DAVE WILSON asked: Can this be applied over Helmsman Spar Varnish if it is well sanded first?
+Expand Answers
2012-01-20JIM MCCARTHY: I'M NOT AN EXPERT IN CETOL, ALTHOUGH I HAVE USED IT FOR YEARS. I PERSONALLY WOULD SAND DOWN TO THE WOOD BEFORE APPLYING. I HAVE A LOT OF CONFIDENCE IN CETOL, BUT LITTLE TO NONE IN VARNISH. VARNISH IS BEAUTIFUL FOR ABOUT A MONTH, BUT THEN THE SLOW DETERIORATION BEGINS, AND WITHIN A YEAR YOU ARE REFINISHING IT AGAIN. WITH A VARNISH BASE, I WOULD WORRY THAT THE DETERIORATION WOULD CONTINUE IT'S USUAL COURSE BENEATH THE CETOL AND IT WOULD LIFT THE ENTIRE FINISH. IT'S JUST TOO MUCH WORK AND TOO MESSY TO REFINISH BRIGHTWORK TO TAKE THE CHANCE. I SUPPOSE YOU COULD TRY IT ON A SECTION AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS, AND IF IT WORKS OUT YOU COULD COMPLETE THE REST, BUT IT WOULD BE A YEAR OR SO BEFORE YOU KNEW IF IT WAS WORKING. TRY LOOKING ON THE CETOL WEBSITE AND SEE IF THERE ARE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS THERE.
YOU SHOULD KNOW HOWEVER THAT CETOL MARINE GLOSS IS A TOPCOAT FOR CETOL MARINE ITSELF.
2012-01-20FRANK MCCAMMON: I have applied Sikkens Cetol Marine over old sanded varnish without any problems. However, I recommend a close reading of the directions on the container. For example, the instructions point out that it is possible to get an uneven finish with this product if it is not brushed on continuously and smoothly with a high quality brush. I found that to be very true. The gloss is more thick than it is thin and it resists brushing. And, there are some directions as to using other Sikkens products for preparing surfaces. I ignored those without incident. I recently applied Gloss directly to freshly planed and sanded red mahoghany, after sealing the wood with a common petroleum-based staining sealer. The Gloss performed beautifully. I suggest testing a small area to see how it does. By the way, the Sikkens Gloss has little if any tint, which might present problem with uneven appearance if the varnish is sanded away in some places, like on the edges. I've found this to be an excellent product, far superior and protective of wood than varnish.
2012-01-20DEANNA WHEELER: No, Cetol gloss cannot be used over anything else but it's own base ( Cetol marine) you may however use varnish over several coats of cetol, and as with anything always re-coat as needed BEFORE any of it breaks down.
2012-01-20DEANNA WHEELER: You would be wasting your time even trying, I have been in the business now for 22 years, please take my advice
2012-01-21TIM DILLMAN: I think it says on the can that you must sand all the spar varnish off before using. However, I could only get about 100% of it sanded off about 80% of the bench I was refinishing so I just scuffed up the 20% and used the sikkens over the top of the spar varnish. It seemed to work fine; time will tell. I would make sure it is sanded well before doing it especially if you can get to it with a sander. Make sure you do it in a very well vented area, this sikkens stuff is full of VOC's and it will mess with your head. I did it outside and if there was not a good breeze, it made me dizzy, it is some wicked stuff and I hope it lasts a long time.
2012-04-16Michael Reardon: Dave, that is a very common question we get, thanks for asking. Recommended to remove all old traditional varnish first and start w/ one of the 3 cetols that include UV. Then finish w/ clear gloss for best appearance/ film depth. You mention "spar" varnish, If you are doing this to spars, you may find the traditional varnish lasts longer b/c it has more flex.
2012-06-07DEANNA WHEELER: NO, but you can however use varnish over a Cetol finish
2011-11-22TERRENCE SHINN asked: What is the recommendation for recoating over the gloss? Can the pigmented product be used for repairs and maintenance coats over the gloss then gloss used again as the finish?
+Expand Answers
2011-11-22HENRY RIEHL: I fail to see the rationale for that approach if one keeps up with gloss coating.
I have always laid down the pigmented coats (2) on bare wood. Then covered with gloss overcoats, and seasonally (every year or two) adding a new gloss coat. So long as those gloss overcoats are kept in decent shape, with occasional recoats, I don't see the need to EVER re-apply pigmented coats.
Stated differently, I maintain in a fashion where the gloss are my renewable "wear-out" coats, and the pigmented coats, protected by the gloss, are "permanent".
2011-11-22PAUL MORGAN: yes,
2011-11-23DEANNA WHEELER: if you need to repair the base coat, usually you are down to the wood anyway, just do one spot or you will have an uneven (pigmented) base coat, then coat over with the gloss coats, if the base coat is not damaged, just apply gloss coat. You can use the base over the gloss, but it will be an obvious spot.
2011-12-05FRANK MCCAMMON: I've found that the pigmented product works best when absorbed into open-grained, unfinished or freshly sanded wood; not on top of a layer or layers of gloss. Pigment on top of gloss might result in an uneven color or splotchy appearance. Repairs that involve sanding down to the original wood should be re-coated first with the pigmented product (before applying gloss) to blend in with the surrounding wood for the best result. However, the pigmented product will work on top of just about anything if you apply enough coats and will darken with more coats. The gloss will not change the appearance of the wood, except to make it more glossy. So, whatever surface you start with in terms of color ("pigment") that is likely what you'll end up with when using gloss.
2011-09-08A shopper asked: u/v protection with this product?

2011-09-09ROY HANKS: yup, but i just applied it so i dont know the long term. other review on the boston whaler site praise it over 5 years......we[ll see
2011-09-09HENRY RIEHL: I do not believe Cetol Marine Gloss, by itself, offers any UV protection. My understanding is it is intended to be used OVER one of the other Cetol products (original Marine, Natural Teak, etc.) and it is that under-coated product that UV-protects the wood. The Marine Gloss overcoats simply provide more weather protection and a gloss, rather than matte finish.
I put down 2 coats of (original) Marine with two more coats of Gloss on top. Unlike others, I do not mind the orange-y look of original Cetol Marine. I was attracted to Cetol by:
1. no sanding
2. Practical Sailor tests showing good longevity
As I only applied it this summer, I can say I was happy with application and appearance, longevity is yet to be proven.
2011-09-30PETER CHANDLER: I don't have a scientific response re UV protection. My experience has been primarily with 3 coats of Cetol Marine Gloss over 3 coats of Cetol Natural teak, all on exterior brightwork that is 35+ years old (and had a variety of treatments and neglect before I took it down to bare teak and refinished.) I find that it holds up well with a renewal coat every year--certainly better than varnish, and it is a lot easier to prepare and apply than varnish. My boat is kept in New England and is covered approximately 6 months each year.
2011-09-30TIM DILLMAN: That is my understanding. I have not used it yet but I bought it to put on an outdoor redwood bench that I have had to sand and refinish about every three years. I was using Spar Vanish and was looking for something more durable and long lasting when I purchased the Sikkens Cetol marine products. The "Gloss" is just a topcoat, you will need to put up to 5 coats of their other product on before you put the gloss on for max protection.
2011-11-23DEANNA WHEELER: There is uv protection with Cetol base, i.e. the pigmented color. I have been using it for 21 years on various boats. If Gloss( recommended) is wanted, just apply 2 light base coats and apply at least 6 gloss coats (n I use 10 to accomplish a more "varnished" look). Then I re-coat every 12-18 months ( always keep an eye out for blemishes, scrapes, chips and repair immediately) with 3 coats. Most of them I have done over the years, you cannot tell it is not "varnished".
2013-01-20Julia Miller: Deanna, I am not a professional but have done a lot of bright work. Would you even recommend 6-10 coats of the gloss in the sun parched climate of Florida? It seems that without the UV stuff it must just gum up in this brutal climate. Just curious- I value your comments

Comments about Sikkens Cetol Marine Gloss:
We used this on a seriously sanded fir deck rail cap around our decks on our home. We sanded the rails extensively to get them flat and smooth. This reduces the amount of materials needed to coat the wood. Sanding makes the wood take up less product for complete coating. The appearance is outstanding, and the UV protection is something we hope will keep this material from degrading too rapidly, as the rails are exposed to sun most of the day on sunny days, and are fully exposed to rain all year. Will try to update this review after winter to advise of condition of rails. The overall appearance is very shiny and golden with an undercoating of 3 coats of the Cetol Marine satin or Marine Light. Just follow their instructions to the letter, and you will get great results.
