Questions & Answers about Pettit Shipendec Enamel Paint:
2013-01-21A shopper asked: Is any type of primer needed?
+Expand Answers
2013-01-21RICK GOODE: Yes....I suggest you check the following link for recommendations (never mind, won't allow me to put a link.)
Check the pettitpaint . com website under topside enamel / traditional enamels for recommendations.
I don't know what you are painting, but I would consider one of the one part polyurethanes as an alternatrive. I was restoring an old lobsterboat and this was the paint that was used on it since the mid 1960's. I followed all the instructions and used the recommended primers, and have had some paint failures (blistering). The positives are it is very user friendly to apply and produces a nice finish if you can keep dust off of it. Hope this helps
2013-01-22TOM MACKENZIE: depends on the substrate and how it's been prepped
2013-01-22RICHARD HAMILTON: We didn't. We painted cloth not wood.
2013-01-22BILL RATLIFF: I painted an aluminum boat which had never been painted. I used the primer recommended by Pettit and then applied two coats of paint. Both products were purchased from Jamestown Distributors. The paint has performed flawlessly and, the 70's vintage boat looks brand new. I recommend both products.
2013-01-22MARK F MERCIER: I don't know if it's required. I have only used the marchgrass and dull dead grass paints and applied them over a urethane finish with very good result.
2013-01-22MATT SCOTT: I have painted clean bare fiberglass with it and it held up well. You shouldnt need it
2013-01-23PETER LAHAYE: From What I read, a primer is not needed. The first coat did sink into the wood pretty well, but made a nice finish after a second coat. put it no liberally if it is going to have traffic on it. And give it a couple days to harden thoroughly. I'm very pleased with the finish, toughness and ease of cleaning.
2013-01-26DAVID MCDONALD: I would not want to put it on bare metal
2012-06-24VINCENT CRUZ JR. asked: can I use this product to repaint a fiberglass deck?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-17Nathan Fournier: Enamel paint's dry hard so yes you can put this on a properly prepared deck that either has an existing enamel that you've sanded with 120-220 grit sandpaper, cleaned with acetone or interlux 216 thinner, then apply at least two coats of paint, sanding with 320 grit in-between each coat. If it's bare fiberglass then you need to sand with 120 grit followed by 220 grit, prime the surface with the Pettit undercoater for enamel's "ZS-0105Q", wait a full 24 hours, sand with 220 grit again then proceed with at least two coats, once again sanding with 320 grit in-between each coat, using either a foam or mohair roller 3/16nap or less. So, it can be done if you like the paint, however it will be a glossy surface which can tend to be slippery, using a gloss reducer like the "INT-YMA715Q" and also a non-skid additive like the "INT-2398" is usually used. Interlux's "INTERDECK" is a deck paint with all of these additives already applied and ready to go. Thank you.
2012-04-25SAL BEATTY asked: Is this paint a good choice for an Aluminum jon boat?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-25KURT FISCHER: I bought it for a wood boat, and it's terrific, but I have used itonaluminum boats before with very good results. Make sure the boat is really clean before you start or you might get some flaking. I'd give it a quick bath with TSP and then a light sanding, and you'll have a solid finish.
2012-04-25MATT SCOTT: I painted some bare metal aluminum piano springs with it and it chipped some but, If you prime it first you should be good to go
2012-04-25AUSTIN GRAHAM: yes, thats what i used on. I used it on the same boat 10 years ago and it finally needed a new coat. half a quart covered a 16 foot boat outside only. good paint just make sure the surface is really clean first and use a cheap hardware store paint roller to apply and you will get a nice even finish
2012-04-25AUSTIN GRAHAM: yes thats what i used it on. make sure it is really clean first. use a paint roller to get a nice even finish
2012-04-25ROBERT GILMORE: Absolutely, I highly recommend it. We painted the wood and inside aluminum surfaces with this paint.
2012-04-25ROBERT GILMORE: Absolutely, we painted the wood and aluminum interior surfaces with it. I highly recommend it.
2012-04-26JOHN SYMONDS: Enamel paint is pretty adaptable stuff and should work well. To be safe, pick the appropriate primer as a bond coat.
2012-04-26TOM MACKENZIE: sure, but if the aluminum is bare you should probably prime it first
tom
2012-01-03A shopper asked: Can you apply this paint over a polyurethane paint?
+Expand Answers
2012-01-04KURT FISCHER: Sure, just give it a decent sanding prior to application.
2012-01-04MATT SCOTT: absolutely, i put it over apoxy all the time. just make sure you sand with 400 grit sand paper and clean the surface well with soap and water then let dry before painting.
2012-01-04R DAVIDSON: Dont know. I applied it over primer (pettit), and then marine plywood only to have it peel away over 1 year. The paint stuck perfectly to solid wood and epoxy covered portions of the plywood, but not to the bare bits - very disappointment and now much sanding.
2012-01-05BILL RATLIFF: I don't know. I painted a 70's model aluminum Grumman Sport boat that was unpainted. The paint looks good and has performed well.
2011-11-07A shopper asked: will this paint be ok for the side of boat ?
a little will be in water when we are using it but it stays on a lift
+Expand Answers
2011-11-08TOM MACKENZIE: it should be fine, it's a traditional topside enamel
the more expensive Easypoxy or Brightside (and others) are tougher and higher gloss, but how tough and shiny does it have to be?
tom
2011-11-08PAUL FICKEN: I used the paint on the deck of a 17' motor boat where I had to fix a couple rotted out areas with PT plywood. Also used on the other areas of the deck that wern't rotted. I used brush, and since it was under "fabric" wasn't really concerned with the appearance. It may do ok sealing the side of a boat not totally under water, but I don't think I would been able to get a good look done the way I did. Not sure if that is an issue for you. Maybe a sprayer would better??? I would read the label carefully. It worked well for my purpose.
2011-11-08ROBERT GILMORE: I bought this paint for the inside of my boat and used it on both wood and aluminum. A small amount also goes a long way as it covers well and appears to resist moisture. The color fades with sunlight but I think that is normal as well. I would say this is a quality product and recommend it for others to use.
2011-11-08PETER LAHAYE: I would probably say it would be okay for temporary submersion. I used it for the entire interior of a 10' sailboat. Almost impossible to keep water out of this kind of craft, and it sits there all day while in use. I have not had any issues with the paint where the standing water pools. Give this paint several days to fully cure and harden. I used it directly on bare wood... no primer. The first coat soaked in pretty deep, the second coat left a nice hard glossy shell.
2011-11-09DONALD TYLER: I used it on the topside - looks good
2011-11-09KURT FISCHER: It should be just fine. I've used it for years on a wood boat that is sometimes in the water for a few days at a time, but is usually on a trailer. I've never had a problem with it.
