Surface Preparation
Prior to application, surfaces to be painted must be free of all dirt, peeling paint, rust, oil, grease, wax and other interfering
materials.
Fiberglass
Wash with soap, ammonia and water. Let dry, then clean thoroughly with Z*Spar T-1132 Fiberglass Prep
Solution. Sand with 220 grit sandpaper. Clean off sanding dust thoroughly by vacuuming and/or airblasting followed by
wiping with a clean tac-rag. If surface is slightly rough or porous, prime with Z*Spar 105 White Undercoater.
Old Paint
All existing painted surfaces in good firm condition should be lightly sanded. All existing paint in poor
condition (cracked, blistered, peeling) must be removed and surfaces treated as new.
New or Bare Wood
Surfaces must be sanded with 180-220 grit sandpaper. Remove sanding dust by vacuuming and/
or airblasting followed by wiping with a clean tac-rag. Surfaces should then be sealed with Z*Spar S-120 Clear Sealer.
After the sealer has dried, apply one coat of Z*Spar 105 White Undercoater. Sand undercoater with 220 grit sandpaper
before applying Z*Spar Topside Enamel.
Aluminum
Sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper. Clean off sanding dust before applying paint. Apply one coat of Z*Spar
P-707 Prime-All Primer before applying Topside Enamel. Z*Spar 105 White Undercoater can be used over P-707 Prime-
All Primer for smoothing surfaces if desired.
Steel
Surfaces must be well sandblasted or sanded to remove all millscale and rust. Then apply 2 coats of Z*Spar P-
646 or 340 Gold Epoxy Primer. Z*Spar 105 White Undercoater can be used over P-646 or 340 Gold for smoothing
surfaces if desired. NOTE: When removing sanding dust from a sanded surface, DO NOT use thinner solvent, gasoline
or a dirty rag. DO use a tac-rag, vacuum, air blast or a clean dry cloth. NOTE: If filling or fairing of nonsubmerged
surface is required use #1 or #2 White Glazing Putty after the first coat of 105 White Undercoat.
Application
Brush, roller, conventional or airless spray. For brush application reduce with approximately 5-10% T-10
Thinner, or T-11 Thinner in excessively hot weather and apply in full wet coats. For spray application thin with 15-20% T-
8 Thinner and spray on two coats approximately 15-20 minutes apart. The first coat should be a light coat and the
second coat should be a medium coat. If the second coat cannot be applied within 20 minutes, allow an overnight dry
between coats. An alternate spray method would be to apply two full coats allowing a 24 hour drying time between
coats and sanding with 280-320 grit sandpaper prior to the final coat.

Questions & Answers about Z-Spar Topside Enamels:
2012-10-18A shopper asked: What is the difference between the solid coat gloss white and the gloss white?
+Expand Answers
2012-10-18Nathan Fournier: Excellent question, and the answer is that the "Solid Coat 99" is a very slightly blue tinted white, so when the sun hit's it, it turns white instead of yellowing, also it has more titanium which gives it better coverage over existing colors (For example: Painting a white over a black will require less coats), thank you.
2012-06-07JAMES R. FAUGUST asked: Is Z-spar available in other colors and or capable of being tinted. I am looking for N0.87 Shell Ivory, a Z*color at one time. Can you point me in a direction where buy I might be able to find out about it? In the meantime I'll try Petit ship and deck...thanks

2012-06-07Dory Rice: Hi,
I know nothing about Z-spar colors, but used Z-spar on a 12 ft sharpie I built.Very disappointed. Hard to apply, too shiny. Sanded it all off and used Kirby paint instead. Much easier to use, nice finish. I highly recommend it.

2012-05-16SIMON PUGSLEY asked: Can I get different colors? I need a pale-ish blue or maybe a medium blue.... If it only comes in white or black, where would I get a tinting product and what is it called?
Thanks,

2012-05-16TOM PETERSON: Hi Simon.
It has been many years since I worked in a boatyard but Z-Spar is such a great product I named my dog ZSpar. This was before Pettit owned them.
I do not recall there being colors so I did a search and found only white. There is, however, another Z-Spar product called Shipendec and it has a number of traditional colors.
I went to Pettits online page and they do not make it easy to find Z-Spar products and I am not sure why because I think it is a better product than their homegrown stuff. However go on their site go to Products>Topside paint>Easypoxy>Shipendeck and you can see what they have and they have the traditional white paint that is so popular. I tend to think they are the same product becasue both the white and Shipendeck products are a modified long oil alkyd enamel base. Perhaps it is that easy? Hope so.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
Good luck Simon,
Tom
2012-05-16PATRICIA STITZENBERGER: I asked you a similar question this past week!
2012-05-15RICHARD GERMAIN asked: CAN THIS PAINT BE USED ON SWIMMING POOL FIBERGLASS STAIRS ?
+Expand Answers
2012-05-15JARED KIBELE: I don't think an enamel would last very long on fiberglass. I've used one part urethane paints on epoxy and fiberglass before. They stick for a while but eventually start to flake off. I'd think the enamel would do the same thing and possibly do it faster. A gel coat would be the way to go. It's a bit more trouble to apply and to get the color the way you want it (unless you just want it white - that's easy) but it will bond with the fiberglass much better and last a lot longer.
2012-05-15JOSEPH LANARO: yes you must thin it out with T- 11 but it seems to be hard to get T- 10 will do
it is water resistant and with those brush stroke thinners you will get a beautiful finish. use the thinner liberally. I know this will sound wild but I do a 48 foot wood hull on my 69 pacemaker with a quart of 99 high gloss... I am constantly thinning the paint and it gives a smooth glass like finish. People come up to my boat and bang on the side because they think it is fiberglass. It is comical when I am inside the boat and hear knocking on the sides of the boat and this has happened on more than one occasion....
2012-05-15PHILIP WONG: No help from here on fiberglass. I used it on wood countertops, wet and dry. Working out great.
Philip
2012-05-16TERRY TEAGUE: Hi Richard, not if you are gong to submerge them. The paint is topside, and will not do well submerged for very long. There are some actual pool paints you can use. I have been told you can use a pure urethane, but I have no esperience with it.
2012-05-29ALAN ROBBINS: I'm sure it would work well, provided the stairs are clean, and you rough them up a bit with medium grit sandpaper.
I'd look at Interlux non skid deck paint as an alternative. It goes down easy, is kind on bare feet, and won't be slippery (this will).
Good luck with your project!
2011-11-07DAVID BERRY asked: I need to know which paint to use on the sides of my boat . I don't leave it in the water, Should I still use anti-fouling paint on the bottom?
+Expand Answers
2011-11-08ERICK SINGLEMAN: I used Z-spar on my skiff that I trailer sail. I was not as impressed with it compared to Petit Easypoxy
2011-11-08DON DERRICK: I have successfully used Z-Spar topside gloss white on the hull of my shellback dinghy.
I'm in fresh water, leave it in for a week or two at a time.
No antifouling paint.
I've repainted three times in 14 years.
Don
2011-11-08DEAN ROBINSON: David, this oil-based enamel from Z-spar is a beautiful brushed material for wooden hulls for its superior flattening behavior, gloss, and for me, its ease of refinishing which is at least every other season. It sands quickly and sealing - priming - topcoat system are perfect. Interlux is stiff and too hard. Z-spar works very well on fiberglass too. I would use it when a hull is old and no longer polymerizing as much. On a new plastic hull I'd use a plastic like awlgrip.
as for bottom paint, if the boat stays in the river/sea water for more than three weeks, the bottom should have anti-fouling paint.
2011-11-08JOHN MEYER: I "drysail" my sailboat, it doesn't stay in the water more than a couple days at a time. The rest of the time it stays in my garage. The hull has no growth at the end of the season. No need for bottom paint. I used gloss enamel with excellent results.
2011-11-08KENNETH SLOAN: David. I have used Z-Spar enamel on the entire hull of my 18' wooden catboat. I keep it on a trailer and only sail it in fresh water. The longest it's been is the water continuously is 11 days. The only fouling I get is from algae, which washs off. The boat is 10 years old - I've touched a few areas, but most of hull still has the original paint on it. Ken Sloan
2011-11-09CAROL MURRAY: David - We used Z-Spar Topside Enamel on the top decks of our Bolger designed, wooden Bantam in the fall of 2010 (I believe this was on the recommendation of someone at Jamestown.) We scattered some skidless compound onto the paint as well. This fall, 2011, we returned to our boat which is stored outdoors,on land, in Florida for the summer and couldn't be more pleased with the way the paint stood up and cleaned up too. We think that it's a good product. As to using anti-fouling paint on the bottom - if you have a fiberglass boat and it is always cleaned off and stored out of the water, no absolute need - but if you've got a wooden boat, anti-fouling paint is cheap insurance and good protection. from "Happily Retired in Cocoa Beach."
2011-11-05DAVID BERRY asked: What is the difference between the: Solid Coat Gloss White vs. Gloss White? And Does this paint come in any other colors?
Thanks!
+Expand Answers
2011-11-07JOSEPH ZARASCHI: Dave,
The best answer comes directly from the Z-Spar website. All technical and features are presented there.
Besides you would think the distributor, Jamestown should know the answer.....customer service, I guess they want their customers to do all the work for them.
2011-11-07ROD CURTISS: Soild coat has much greater coverage ability than Gloss white. After primer, I apply 1 or 2 coats of solid coat (sanding between coats). Then I sand and apply one coat of Gloss white.
The end result is excellent. My wife and I have been doing this since 1981 and can testify that you will be happy with both of thes products.
They level very well, show no brushmarks and stand up to the harsh marine environment.
2011-11-07David Berry: Thanks Rod
I am new to boat painting. I have a 1988 Lund aluminum boat i want to repaint.
The paint is starting to get very thin in spots. some down to the metal
2011-11-08NATE WIESE: Not sure what the difference between Solid Coat vs Gloss is. We used this product on fiberglass fish feeders and had good success. It also comes in Black - that is the color we used.
Good Luck!

2011-11-08FRED MURPHY: David Sorry don't know the difference. I use Z-spar paints even Gloss white but have never used Solid Coat Gloss white.
I do like Z-spar paint though.
2011-10-01JOHN K asked: What is the difference between the: Solid Coat Gloss White vs. Gloss White? Thanks,
+Expand Answers
2011-10-03PATRICK CARTER: I am not sure what the difference is but I know that the gloss white is the best white enamel that I have used . I painted my kitchen cupboards in my house with it and also painted my 1962 trojan motoryacht topsides with it, we love the way it leaves no brush marks and self levels. I have had people think that my boat is gel coated because of the great finish it has with this paint. If you want a white finish that shines this is the paint to use.
good luck
P.C.
2011-10-05ROD CURTISS: ZSpar 99 has more solids and is a great base coat. ZSpar 100 has a better gloss and is a perfect topcoat. I have been using it for the past 30 years on my 36 foot wooden yawl. It is easy to apply, provides excellent coverage and stands up very well to the environment.

Comments about Pettit Z-Spar Z-Spar Topside Enamels:
We used the high gloss black as a waterline stripe on our Florida based 34' sailboat. I did not add thinner and the 98deg day caused the paint not to "flow" as much as I wanted. It was applied with a small foam roller. If I had thinned it down, as specified in the instructions,,,,, it would have given me the sprayed look I wanted. It still is an impressive finish and will not be redone.

Comments about Pettit Z-Spar Z-Spar Topside Enamels:
I used to use Petit Easypoxy which is very good, but I had heard very good things about Z-spar and wanted to give it a try. I was not dissappointed, Z-spar flowed out nicely after brushing on. I experimented by using the roller then tip off method on one part of the boat and just brushing on another. The brushed part looked as good or better. And the semi gloss looks great. People have thought the boat was fiberglass, because you can't see the brush strokes. Also, it was a good value compared to other top brands. I will use this from now on.
