System Three Clear Coat epoxy resin is a very low viscosity (thin), almost colorless epoxy system with a long pot life and cures without amine blush.
Unlike some of the so called penetrating epoxies, Clear Coat contains no solvent. Furthermore, it is a very strong system when cured whereas the penetrating epoxies have little in any strength or resistance to moisture.
System Three Clear Coat wets out fiberglass cloth almost instantly and is sometimes used to build furniture-grade strip planked hulls. Use this epoxy as the base coat in fiberglass gel coat blister repair, particularly when the gel coat has been removed to expose damaged and loose glass fibers. Ideally suited for clear coating wood, it is also used as a primer or base for varnish and linear polyurethane coatings.

Questions & Answers about System Three Clear Coat Epoxy:
2013-02-26MEL SMOTHERS asked: My sys 3 hardener is yellowing in the bottle. How can I keep it clear?,or is it a manufacturing glitch?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-28Kevin V: It is not a manufacturing issue over time all hardeners will start to turn yellow. Once it starts to yellow you can not get it to go back to clear. The only way to slow down the process of yellowing is to keep it in a cool and dark storage area.
2013-02-23ALLEN M asked: We have applied 7 coats to a redwood slab table to protect the soft wood from all of our firefighters. We have sanded with 100 to 800 wet dry paper and three part buffing system and still have sections that didn't blend layer to layer ( even though it's smooth you can see the next layer under it ). We thought oil might help but now we have shinny spots and large dull areas depending what angle you look at it. We are now thinking about applying a spar varnish after sanding the oil off. Can anyone help please????????
+Expand Answers
2013-02-26MEL SMOTHERS: You have way too much time on your hands. Staple a plastic table cover over it, like the rest of us do.
2013-02-28Allen M: Thanks Mel,
Your a big help buddy.
2013-02-26ANDY MCCLUNG: I used system three clear coat on a wood boat that I restored. It is a great way to get thick penetrating initial coats.
You have to put a varnish for the last several coats to protect from UV especially if it gets sun light on it even through a window. The UV's will do a number on the finish and cause dulling discoloring etc.
I used and like spare urethane sold at HD or Lowes. Gloss(it is harder than satin) first then decide if you want the last layer satin or a mix (you can mix satin and gloss to suit) to meet y'alls preference. Don't forget to mix the satin well as you use it. You can always go with just gloss.
My guess is this will work great and you will be happy with the results
Good Luck !
2013-03-02Allen M: Andy, We have put several coats of spar varnish on now with a couple more to go. The table is turning out very nice. Thank you for your help.
2013-02-26CHRIS FLACCUS: Allen,
I've used this product on a meranti marine plywood drift boat hull, and also outdoor furniture as well as exterior window sills of otherwise unfinished pine. I must say that I haven't had great luck with this product outdoors, but this is what I've learned: subsequent coats of the product are best applied when the base coats are still "green" (not fully cured). That way they bond chemically to the coat underneath. Also, the product reacts very quickly to UV sunlight, causing it to loose luster, and eventually turning it a milky white. Spar varnish does adhere well to the finish, and will protect it from this UV deterioration.
Hope this helps.
2013-01-22BIGGESTDOG420 B asked: I am considering using this product lay carbon fiber material onto a wood substrate. It needs to be as strong as possible, and cure as clear as possible. I would like to sand and then polish the coating. Is this the best product to use for the application?
thank you, Larry Schnellmann
+Expand Answers
2013-01-22RICHARD DUBINSKY: Sorry, but I have no experience with carbon fiber
2013-01-22biggestdog420 b: Nor do I, but i will rest easier knowing you have no experience with carbon fiber.
2013-01-22DAN WEAVER: Clear coat is clear [with slight amber hue if 3mm or more thick] and drips are strong enough to survive years on a concrete floor. I had to use a grinder to remove it.
2013-01-22RICHARD LAWRENCE: Better to ask the tech staff at system three's website. I have found them very helpful for a specific question such as yours.
It's a great product but I'm unsure how the mix you propose will handle it. The system three clear coat has very little application information on the containers or at their website. But the response time is very short.
2013-01-23DERWIN BROWN: I have used this epoxy to lay down carbon fiber tow, both onto a wood substrate and into a mold. I don't know if this is the best epoxy for such an application, but I had good luck with it. The main issue with laying down the tow is to get the epoxy to penetrate the fibers. I have not laid down carbon fiber cloth, but have done a lot of glass fiber cloth. I don't see any special considerations for the carbon cloth. What you need to keep in mind is that the strength comes from the fiber itself. The epoxy is merely the bonding agent - very important, as the fibers need to be bonded well. And, of course, the only reason you are using carbon instead of glass is to increase the strength to weight ratio. And, since the bulk of the weight comes from the epoxy, you want to keep the epoxy to the minimum required to obtain a strong fiber adhesion.
As for polishing, I could not really comment on that, as I was looking for a flat black finish to reduce light reflection (telescope).
Good luck.
2013-01-23PETER VANDERMEER: I have only used carbon fiber with the epoxy in model airplanes but it seemed to work just as easy as any of the fiberglass products. System three materials are very easy to work with.
2012-12-11ROXANA MIRA asked: can we use this product to restore the shine on a RV and to protect it so it can not lose its brightness again?
+Expand Answers
2012-12-11Kevin V: This product is not designed for that application. You will want to use a buffing compound to restore the shine and then us a good wax to give you a long lasting shine.
2012-10-24A shopper asked: Can I use this along with fiberglasscloth to overlay wooden oar paddles?
+Expand Answers
2012-10-25DERWIN BROWN: Absolutely. I have done this with canoe paddles. Also, canoe paddles tend to get beat up along the edges. To help protect them we add a little fiberglass roving along the edge, smooth it out to blend with the blade and then add the cloth to the blade.
2012-10-25DENNIS MEHEGAN: wrapping the paddle blade near the tip with cloth sealed with clear epoxy should help prevent fraying and splitting. You need enough sanded coats to completely fill the weave which may add weight where you don't want it. System Three resin is easy to use and has a long shelf life. ADM
2012-10-25BRUCE MITCHELL: This epoxy will wet out fiberglass cloth. Suggest you use 5oz cloth or less to ensure that you get a fine finish. I am assuming that you are trying to protect the paddles.
2012-10-25GEORGE HAUCK: Yes and it is clear as opposed to west system. the only issue is it is not as viscous. You will need to set aside a day to do the job. You will require a sqeegee to remove excess from the wetting down the cloth to the oar. Allow the clear coat to become thick as cold syrup and press down the cloth to the wood surface. You will have to repeat the process until to weeve is covered. The instructions advise you can apply consecutive coats if you do not allow the epoxy to fully cure. When it is solidified but still tacky apply your next coat. You are trying to cover the weeve sufficiently so sanding can take place with out damaging the fiberglass cloth.
IIt will take approximately 8 hours to get three to four coats down. Sanding is to smooth out any bumps or bubbles before your last coat.
George Hauck.
2012-09-06TONY YAMAMOTO asked: What kind of container do they use for 1-1/2Gallon kit? I'm currently using 1-1/2 Pint kit.
+Expand Answers
2012-09-06STEVE KLEIST: Jamestown, Can't you look at the container and answer his question?
2012-09-07PETER JAMISON: The 1-1/2 gallon kit came in plastic containers. Pete
2012-09-07Tony Yamamoto: The photo you are showing looks like a pint kit.
Does 1-1/2 gallon kit come in eight 1-1/2 pint kits? Or single bottle?
I'm asking the container size.
2012-09-07PETER JAMISON: It came in single bottles of resin and hardener.
2012-09-08Tony Yamamoto: Thank you.
2012-08-28DEBORAH WATTS asked: I want to seal wood to place in my saltwater fish tank. I was informed that marine epoxy is what I need to use...will this work or is there something better you have for me to use?
+Expand Answers
2012-08-28CHARLES ANDREWS: I used System Three to coat a picnic table with limited results. I was not able to coat all 6 sides of a board so after a year the coating began to deterioate. In fairness to the product the table was exposed to the sun and outdoor elements during the summer months in northern Michigan at a lakeside location.
2012-08-28MICHAEL MCGARTY: Clear coat will work well.
For a bullet proof job use it with light fiberglass cloth as well.
Might need to cure for a while to make sure the fish are ok.
2012-08-29COASTAL WOODWORKS: I use it for my kayak paddle and my kayak deck. My kayak is only used in the salt water of the Gulf of Mexico. Just make sure you every surface covered well.
2012-08-29COASTAL WOODWORKS: Having read Charles' comment above I should note that all epoxy must be coated with ultraviolet protection if you plan to expose it to the sun. After I cover my paddles with the epoxy resin I always apply several coats of a good marine varnish for protection.
2012-09-02DERWIN BROWN: Deborah, I like the System Three Clear Coat Epoxy and have used it in my workshop for a variety of projects. I think it should do the job for you. Sometimes, when I have small pieces, I will warm them in the oven first - perhaps 150 degrees - then brush on the epoxy. As the pieces cool, the epoxy is drawn into the wood fibers. You do not want to coat the wood first and then heat it, as this will cause bubbles, leaving 'pinholes' and an unsightly finish.
Good luck with your project.
Derwin Brown

2011-12-30A shopper asked: I need to fill some dents in a Teak floor, they are small about the size of a dime and about as deep. Some have broken fibers, and some don't.
Do I have to remove the Poly on the surface of the Teak?
Will this work, and should I coat it after leveling?
Thanks
Leroy
+Expand Answers
2012-01-03DAN WEAVER: Clear coat will work. You can tint it with dyes if needed. I would sand or scrape off the poly. I have spilled some Clear coat on my shop concrete floor that has withstood cars, hammers and scrapers for years. The only way to remove it requires removing the concrete with it. Dan
2012-01-08STEVEN SOBBA: I have not worked with Teak wood . When I built my drift boat it was of meranti plywood, white oak, walnut, and fir. To make plugs I used T88 and or Gel Magic, both by System Three with different fine ness of the same type of wood I was working with. Just made a paste, applied, set, sanded and finished after cure. I thought Teak contained more oil so don not know what S/3 recommends. I would think you would want to get down to raw material, removing Poly but can not answer your question. I am a Fan of System Three!!! Have used it in homebuilt aircraft application also. Steve
I use this on all of my custom wood plugs and couldn't be happier. It makes them look like they are floating in glass.

Comments about System Three Clear Coat Epoxy:
Thin enough to saturate wood, I used to soak eastern red cedar which had some small cracks. It soaked in nice and is thin enough to flatten out brush tip marks before gelling. created a stronger board than I started with and I'll finish with spar varnish.

This is a great product for both clear coating on raw wood by itself or as a primer for varnish top coats. It is also a super product for applying fiber glass cloth to a bare wood surface. Easy to wet out and makes sanding a pleasure.

I've used this product on many projects but the largest of those have been my clasic wooden boat restoration some five seasons ago. To date the boat still looks freshly restored. I would recommend this product as it has stood the test of time!
