Wood Restoration

2012-06-08GERA THOMAS asked: We have dry rot on the ends of several beams on our patio, and also on the end of one of the large header beams. We are selling the house and must make sure repairs are reasonable but acceptable to inspections. Will this product suffice in lieu of replacing the wood? Do I need anything additional to the EndRot Kit, ie penetrating epoxy, etc. Appreciate your help.

2012-06-08ANTHONY ELDERING: I was very satisfied with the kit and product. The kit is complete and you will not have to purchase anything else. Before buying this product I researched repairs methods and this kit has the recommended materials. The other choice is to purchase individual items that will cost you over $200 and leave you with a large leftover quantity. The instructions are easy to follow and the product easy to use. I can not say if the patch will match your deck but I believe that you can add a wood stain or dye before mixing the wood filler. If the patch is very visible you might want to show the kit to the inspector. Good luck.

I used it to cure and replace rotted areas in a 75-year-old wooden mast. I don't think it would be cost-effective for rotted pilings. This was successful for me in the mast application. Maybe some auto-body putty (I think Jamestown has such a product) would work for a while on your pilings.

2012-02-14ROBERT EBERLE: That's two questions. On the first, does it work? Yes, and we think quite well. We followed the directions and fixed some wood rot that had gotten into the base of some cabinets. It has worked just fine, and the problem appears solved.
As to whether it can be stained, I don't know. We painted over the fixed area, and that has worked okay. The color of the filler after the fix makes me think it might work, but to be sure, you might try it out first or ask the manufacturer.

2012-01-17FRANCIS MARSH: End Rot worked great for a mast-rot problem. I was quite surprised because I think it was created for house repairs (not sure of this). I was restoring as 75-year-old catboat, and the mast had a big section of rot near where the headstay was attached. Following the directions, I cut away the rot, drilled for the fungicide capsules, "painted" with the resin and hardener, then filled the cavity with the Sculpwood, which is fun to work with and just the right color for an old varnished mast.
I would use it again, and I would recommend it to anyone who had a similar rot problem to repair. Whether it works for you on such a critical structural part depends on where the rot is in respect to the fastening I would think.
2012-01-17TOWN RIVER WOODWORKS: The End Rot system is a great product, however I would consider it a "non structural" fix. If the damage to your transom is exstensive I would replace it. If it is superficial and not widespread the the End Rot might be a good choice. HTH.
Nice packaging and instructions. Thought that the borate "rods" were missing, but finally found them. There were six, 1/4 x 1/2 "rods." More like oversize rice grains. I was trying to repair the bottom few inches of a 6x6 post, and felt these were inadequate, since the System 3 chart recommends rods 1/2 by 4, if I read it correctly. There was enough epoxy, Board defense powder and Sculpwood for the job, but not enough borate rods. A quick calculation indicates System 3 charges roughly $64 per cubic inch for the tiny pieces, compared to $6 per cubic inch for the 1/2X4 pices. Disappointed.

I used this product on the bottom of my front porch supports posts and my header in the garage that supports the upper level of the house. It has been over 2 years since I did this (on my own) and all looks very nice. No signs of rot coming back. I am a 48 year old woman and if I can do it, anyone can do it. If ever I see signs of rotting anywhere else, I will order more.

I rebuilt the rotted bottom of a long 8X8 structural diagonal support beam (below it's support bolt, of course) using the rot kit. After completion, the repaired area was as solid as the original wood and it was almost impossible to tell there was any repair done. One whole kit was necessary, but replacing the beam would have been very expensive-at least $1500.00.
