Interlux Micron Extra is a self-polishing copolymer antifouling paint that wears down with use. Unlike some bottom paints, Micron Extra can be hauled and relaunched without repainting.
Interlux's slime blocking chemical Biolux is combined with cuprous oxide (copper) for superior protection against shell, weed and slime fouling. The copolymer compound is designed to self polish (or wear like a bar of soap) over time and use.
Extra can be used as a Multi-season antifouling if 2 coats are applied and an additional stripe on highwear area like chines, rudders, sterngear and any leading edges.

Questions & Answers about Interlux Micron Extra Bottom Paint:
2013-04-14A shopper asked: what do i use to thin this product?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-16CRAIG ROSINDALE: Micron Extra can be thinned with Interlux 433. 10% is the recommended thinner proportion.
2013-04-17JOHN PHOTOS: I don't thin this paint. I think it's better to have a nice thick layer of bottom paint for the season.
2013-04-17THOMAS OATES: reduce 10% with Special Thinner 216.
2013-04-18DENNIS PRISCANDARO: I use Interlux solvent 216 Special Thinner. This is what the company recommends, expensive but it works very well.
2013-04-10A shopper asked: Does this paint have to be painted every year or is it painted as it wears off. I have a mako fiberglass boat Or is there a better paint for my boat. boston harbor ?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-11WILLIAM KOESTER: I use it in freshwater and repaint each season. It is an ablative so it wears down like a bar of soap with use. There is always some left at the end of the season but I add more each year before launch. Algae comes off easy with a scrub brush but due to the nature of the paint some of the paint comes off with it.
2013-04-11JIM FOX: On my 3870 Cruiser Inc I laid up 3 coats of the Micron Extra and it will be good for 3 to 4 years here in Michigan, with the ship in the water from May 15th and out on September 19th each year.
2013-04-11PETER COURTWAY: basis of later and does not need to be added every year. I was down to gel coat so I put a barrier coat which was grey. Then two coats of red paint then finished with black paint 3 coats. That way as the paint wears the red shows to indicate that you need to add paint to the bottom
2013-04-11EDWARD LEOPOLD: Micron Extra is a great multi-season paint. So, you may have to do touch ups year to year for a few years and then repaint the whole bottom after 3 years. That's what I did and it saved me paint and labor costs for 2 years. Hope this helps...
2013-04-12BARRY OREILLY: I have used this paint for many years and have been very please. Little slime and no hard growth on the bottom. I usually wipe down once or twice a season around the waterline. Since it is an ablative type it wears off over time but I have gotten 2+ years w/o re-coating. I have a sailboat on the Chesapeake so the paint wears more slowly because of the slower speeds. You have a higher speed power boat and are in cooler water so you may fine a harder paint will last longer for you. JD can make a good recommendation.
2013-04-12DENNIS WINSKI: I have been using Micron Extra for at least eight years on my 27ft Sea Ray which is Summer docked in Portsmouth, NH harbor, from where I often go to Boston. I use a single gallon every other year, with gentle power wash at the end of each season. I change the color for the two year repaint just to make sure the last coat was still there after two years. Never had it fail.
2013-04-13WILLIAM JACOBUS: It depends on how your boats bottom has been prepared. I own a Pursuit 247 and it had the old style preparation of a chemical that softened the gelcoat to promote adhesion. The adhesion of this paint was spotty with some areas always flaking off. I repainted those areas but never solved the adhesion problems and had to touch up every year. Last fall I bit the bullet and had the entire bottom scraped off and repainted with a hard epoxy coating it think Allgrip. The interlux was then applied to this surface. I was told to expect 3-5 years of wear in fresh water. In any case Interlux is a great paint but adhesion is more about the surface prep than the bottom paint.
2013-04-15DENNIS MOORE: I use the Extra, only because I keep my boat in salt, fresh and brackish water. Based on the research I've done, Micron Extra is one of the few ablative bottom paints that works well in all three environments. There are many other ablatives, however, that will work very well in salt water only, and several of them are more environmentally friendly, and less expensive, than Micron Extra. The publication "Practical Sailor" just conducted extensive research on bottom paint and published the results in the last month or so.
Hope this helps.
2013-04-02BRUCE WILLIAMS asked: how should i remove scum at water line before applying a new coat of micron extra.?
+Expand Answers
2013-04-05GEORGE WORTH: I used Star-Brite hull cleaner. Worked great.
2013-04-05RONALD TOUCHET: A high pressure washer followed by scrubbing the old bottom paint with Scotchbrite
2013-04-05MIKE PRISCO: I'm assuming the base coat is Micron.
Remove scum with acid cleaner (several avail), then lightly sand.
Actually it would be best with all paints, or for that matter, anything that you wish to bond, be it paint or sealants, to remove the interference of a contaminent.
Micron is a special situation, in that it needs a special primer coating to adhere to fiberglass, and Micron is then applied to the primer. Micron will not only fail to bond to contaminents, but also to most bottom coats.
2013-04-05MICHAEL HEALEY: Hi Bruce,
If the scum is relatively new, and you have access to a power washer, that will of course be the quickest way to go about it.
However, if the scum is set up and old, I would first tape the paint line with a good quality safe release tape (some of the 3M blue series is actually getting very good now, and I have had excellent results lately. Once carefully taped, lightly hand sand up the the line with 120 grit silicon carbide. LIGHTLY. After that, a gentle wipe down with a micro-fiber cloth damped with water is the next step. That will take off most all of the dust. Once that is completely dry, then (important) follow up with another wipe down iwth Interlux 216 (again, just dampen the cloth and go over the sanded area lightly).
Now the area is properly prepped for painting. If possible, indoor application is preferred, and not too cold or hot. Best time to paint in late morning thru mid-adternoon. Good luck with your project.
2013-04-06TIMOTHY LAKATA: On/off hull cleaner is the best stuff to remove scum line. It will discolor the paint. No big deal as you are applying a fresh coat.
2013-02-06ROB CHICHESTER asked: I am finding conflicting information in the product sheets for Micron Extra. One says to paint when the paint and hull are at least 50F. Another says to paint when the ambient temp and the paint are at least 23 F (-5 C) and the hull is at least 1-2 degrees F above dew point. While I know 50 F would be better, is it POSSIBLE to paint when the hull is less than 50 F AND above dew point?
+Expand Answers
2013-02-06VICTOR SNOWEL: I personally never paint when it is cold. Always do it at least at 50-55 F
2013-04-05MIKE PRISCO: Any paint that has "VOC's", volatile organic compounds, depend on proper ambiant temperature to drive off the volotiles, thereby enhancing the drying, and susequently appropriate bonding.
2013-01-21A shopper asked: how do i determine the sq ft of my boat bottom?
+Expand Answers
2013-01-21G DAVID MODICA: Length on deck times beam is always a good estimate.
2013-01-21HERSHEL BUTLER: It's simply length by width each paint tells you its coverage. I have a 9x 26 cruiser it took 3 quarts to cover it two coats had little left
2013-01-21MICHAEL HEALEY: Well, you can simply multiply the width of your craft by its length. Then multiply by 1.25 for a power boat, and 1.50 for a sailboat. That will give you a "rough" idea. If you want the near exact square footable of the bottom, you can do it with a lightweight thin bedsheet, some tape, a marker pencil, and a day with no wind. You simple move the sheet around the hull, taping it, and keeping track how many times you have to move it. You have to map out the hull, so you do not overlap the placements and re-placements. Then you simply multiply the sheets "know square footage" by how many times you moved it. Its takes time, but give a very accurate square footage of the hull. Example: take a 5 x 7' sheet (35 sq. ft). If you can place it about 7 times on your hull, without overlapping... simply multiply 35 x 7. Got it? Its not perfect, but will be better than the first method. Good luck with your painting project. You can't go wrong using Micron Extra!
2013-01-24MICHAEL GREENE: Interlux provides a chart for determining how much paint you need based on waterline length and type of boat. The chart is available on the Interlux web site (do a Google search for "Interlux Antifouling Paint Calculator").
The chart provided an accurate estimate of how much paint I needed for my 35 foot sailboat. Good luck!
2012-12-03GERRY PORTER asked: Is there a time limit which the painted boat bottom (with Interlux Micron extra) can sit on the hard before it would need to be somehow reactivated? We painted our boats bottom about a month ago, but we have more work to do on the boat and don't wish to put her back in the water for a few more months ( spring time) at least.
thanks, Gerry P.
+Expand Answers
2012-12-04Nathan Fournier: Generally there won't be an issue with that, however because it will be sitting during winter time I recommend you give it a "light" pressure wash which will bring the copper to the surface or "activate" it before launching, this paint is designed to be taken out of the water, and re-launched without any re-painting required so it's a well designed ablative, make sure that there's two coats on the bottom with a 1/4" nap or 3 with a 3/16" mohair (optimal), as opposed to 1 coat with a 3/8". If you've only put on one coat, then you can put one more on the bottom closer to launching time (16 hour min.) because this paint does have a 2 coat minimum, thank you.

2012-10-21A shopper asked: How does Micron extra compare with Act as an ablative paint ?
+Expand Answers
2012-10-22TERRY LIMEHOUSE: I'm not familiar with Act but can tell you that the Micron E goes on thick and out of the can you will have to roll it. If you plan on brushing it for a smoother finish you will have to thin it some. It also takes some time to fully set and seems to stay somewhat pliable.
2012-10-19A shopper asked: I use the Micro extra and usually get 2-3 seasons out of it. Got a lot of growth on one side this year. Should I power wash this or will this knock of the self polishing paint? Brushing with soap and water maybe with some bleach? Thanks, Bob
+Expand Answers
2012-10-19G DAVID MODICA: My yard power washes off a light slime every fall. Two coats usually lasts me 8 years so the power washing must not remove much. I sit in fresh water for five months each year and do about ten hours of low speed running.
2012-10-19LOU MUSTO: My marina power washes every fall and the paint stays on. If the paint is ready to flake off then you might lose some, in those spots. You can sand that spot and touch up if you have any paint left over.
2012-10-19MICHAEL HEALEY: Hi Bob,
I bet the side with the growth is the one facing either the dock, or the sunlight. Power washing the hull "lightly" is a good idea. Bleach, umm - not sure if that's okay, I would tend to avoid that, due to a potential reaction with the paint. Probably just a good scrub down with a Scotch Green (& Yellow) scrub sponges (with some gloves on, is all you really need... Then give the hull a good wash down. Recoat thin areas if required. Good luck with your project mate.
2012-10-03A shopper asked: What is the difference between 5692Q and 5692G?

2012-10-03Ryan L: Q means quart, G means gallons. So, one is a quart and one is a gallon.
2012-07-13MAGNUS LILJEDAHL asked: What if it is applied in Miami, FL, during the summer with high humifdity and above 90F temperature?
+Expand Answers
2012-07-13BRIAN SCHANNING: I live in Mass. and have only applied it in the spring (low humidity). I suggest you contact the manufacturer's technical support for any advice on your situation.
2012-07-13HANK ELLWOOD C/O JERRY SEIDEN: Excellent paint for an outboard board that is pulled out of the water occasionally.
In tropical Mexico I was getting 2 and 1/2 years if I pulled the boat out in the summer and touched up around the water line.
New boat stays in water all year. After a year a half the slimeguard wore out and I was getting slimed but no barnacles. .
When I haul the boat I will try a hard paint and see if it lasts any longer. Micron extra is ablative
2012-07-13MICHAEL HEALEY: Hi Magnus L,
The Interlux Micron Extra is an excellent bottom paint choice for Florida waters. I use it myself exclusively. Application in temps of 90F is okay if your surface is in the shade and your roller is small. (I like those small phenolic resistant 4" foam rollers for applying Micron). It is also to paint at the right time of day in humid climates and to pick your day well. I would choose an afternoon when NO RAIN is forcast. Even in FL, humidity is relatively low, in the dry heat of the afternoon. Additionally, you can always thin with a SMALL amount of Interlux 216... mixed very well into the paint (but I would not do this unless they paint is really misbehaving). Overall, just work with a small roller, in the shade on a nice afternoon... things should turn out fine. Good Luck.
