2013-02-08BURLEIGH LOVEITT: Yes, the unit can be separated from the pump. The housing in a plastic material which fits very tightly over the pump housing. The pump may be pressed from the plastic which forms the holding tank for the oil. The seals are all of the o-ring type which may be found at a hydraulic supplier . Putting the pump back together just requires pushing the tank back onto the pump. I rebuilt both of mine and gave to a boater less fortunate than I . I decided that I better go with new ones. The boating in Maine is often remote and foggy , no time to loose steering with ledges on all sides. I will be pleased to answer any additional questions.
2013-02-08FRANK PINO: Yes, there is a company in Flordia that rebuilds them that I spoke to before I purchased my new one. New is always best, paid a little more but I am happier this way!!
2013-02-14JAMES BISHOP: I know they sell a new o ring kit for this model but I personally would replace the unit because I never have any faith in rebuilt anything without a professional doing the whole job

2012-01-04JAMES CHAFFMAN: I recently purchased a Teleflex Seastar Helm Pump model HH5271 for my 1995 Excell cuddy cabin. The most difficult task in changing the pump was removing the old pump after 16 years. The installation of the new pump was very easy and only took about 10 minutes. The instructions for bleeding the new pump and system were easy to follow and took less than 20 minutes. A second person is required to hold the steering rod in the full left or right positions while you turn the steering wheel and make sure the fluid level is maintained. Actually I used a bar clamp to hold the steering rod for these steps. Any one with minimal mechanical should be able to perform this task. Good luck.
2013-04-08Richard Wheeler: James C. I just occasionally comment when I find a good post - love to have a beer shoot the stuff but for the next 4-5 months I am 14/day installing electronic/hydraulics 6 days a week. Have to have 1 day for family.
Any how, it is best to have a helper, but I guess a bar clamp would work for a quick rough in, (but NOT when installing an autopilot where you must get ever bit if air out of the system, turning the full range slowly.) Manufacturers of hydraulics systems recommend of a slow counter clockwise rotation to port, and then clockwise to starboard topping off and you go... ( For autopilots, you have to attach the pump leak free inline and open the pump's bleeder port and adjusting its directional aspect each time you go port and again starboard). You should bleed the cylinders as well.
If you are out with your friends as you indicated, you can do it this way. You don't even have to bleed the rear hydraulics since your not using an auto pilot. I have done a lot of quick and "dirty" installs for guys with good GPS and got them 90% + steering out of the helm. When I attach temporary transparent the the bubbles hose, 95% steering is normal. Offshore Guys with 300-600 hp carry an extra helm as THEY OFTEN BLOW and SPIN LIKE A BICYCLE WHEEL.
Unlike most things, quality is up here, ( if you how mechanics, and price is down. Nice helm for the price!
Gotta go. Tight Lines, et.al. CaptRichie1
Comments about Teleflex Seastar I & II Helm Pumps:
Installation went well, hose kit helps keep air out of the lines while bleeding the system.

Comments about Teleflex Seastar I & II Helm Pumps:
My use was a retrofit of and older helm that had an 4 1/2" openng in my console. With the use of the backing plate, the install not only looks great, but was pretty routine.
