2013-06-14THAD DANIELSON: Hello Dan,
Wooden boat guy here, but if you check this data from the West site:
Aluminum 2024 T3 650 80-grit sand, 860 etch / dry surface 2731psi
Aluminum 2024 T3 650 Grit blast, 860 etch / dry surface 1856psi
you will see that they call for 860 etch for all AL use and sand and etch, dry, for highest strength.
Hope this helps.
2013-06-14ROBERT TULLOCH: Hi:
Don't know but used acetone to clean surfaces on glass boat before applying epoxy.
Best regards
2013-06-15STEVEN VASSALLO: Yes you should, not just for G-flex but any adhesive or coating.I would also reccomend scuffing with a scotchbrite pad to give it some good grip.A buddy of mine is doing almost an identical project, and we were discussing if CPES would be a good idea before applying the G-flex.the CPES will penetrate all the small cracks and seams and probably be a great primer. good luck let us know what you do and how it works out.
2013-06-02A shopper asked: anyone have any luck repairing crosslinked polystyrene plastic?
+Expand Answers
2013-06-02ED BIGGINS: I have three wilderness 'Pungo' kayaks, which are made of that material. The rear rudders wear out quickly from dragging. It happens. I was able to use the epoxy to repair the leaks and shape the rudder as new again. Works great! I reshaped the rudder using duct tape, which can be removed easily afterwards. I then poured the epoxy into the rear chamber, kayak being in the normal position up. I tilted it at a slight angle so that the epoxy would flow to the rudder area . Left over night drying in a cool environment. It's like new. I highly recommend using this, as I have forwarded this to many friends having this issue with kayaks. All the best!
2013-06-02MARSHALL HALL: I use this in building custom fishing rod handles so do not have experience in repairing cross linked polystyrene. I did read an article about repairing cross linked polyethylene roto molded kayaks using heat and a plastic patch. You might google kayak repair and get some info. The epoxy was not used for this though.

2013-06-03DUANE WILLIAMS: I haven't tried it on that.I've used it more like regular epoxy. It holds very good.
2013-05-30CATHY JACOBS asked: Does it dry clear or does it have a stain?
+Expand Answers
2013-05-30MICHAEL GREY: When dry it feels damp. It's a surface film that easily wipes off. It dries semi clear. All epoxies have an amber hue. It's a flexible epoxy. I first used it on a seaworld project. We are using it to bond acrylic to phenolic and acrylic to aluminum.
2013-06-14THAD DANIELSON: slightly yellow
2013-05-29GORDON MILLIGAN asked: Has anyone used this to fix delamination on their RV? I have two spots on my motor home that has bubbled out about 8 inches and was wondering if this would work for that if I drilled a hole in the fiberglass and used the syringe to get it down in there and then some how put pressure on it with a jack against a cement wall and a 8 inch by 8 inch piece of plywood over the spot were it has bubbled out.

2012-10-31LIUTS DARGIS asked: Hello,
I need to repair a piece of Teak. It is a cap which fractured clean from a dining room table leg. Would G/Flex be a good glue to use (on Teak wood) ?

2012-08-19LARRY BROWN asked: I am sealing leaks in an aluminum boat and it will eventually be painted with single stage automotive paint. Is there any issue with painting over GFlex and is there any special preparation to be done before painting? Thanks to all!
+Expand Answers
2012-08-20FRANK BERRONES: I am sorry I cannot help you with that. We used it as an adhesive to clad wood with copper sheeting.
2012-08-20ROBERT SPANGLER: I JUST PAINTED MY BOAT, I USED G-GLEX ON EVERY RIVET AND SEVERAL CRACKS AND PIN HOLES, I JUST LIGHTLY SANDED IT AND PRIMED, THEN PAINTED OVER IT. IT IS EARLY, BUT LOOKS LIKE ITS DOING GREAT
ROBERT
2012-08-20BRIAN RUSSELL: Epoxy generally accepts paints just fine, as long as their surface is sanded to remove the gloss. I would test a small area or better, a sample before jumping in whole hog. Give the epoxy at least 3 days, better is a week, to fully cure before sanding, priming and painting. Then let the paint cure well. test with some sticky tape. If the tape pulls the paint away easily, then the bond is no good and you need to rethink the method or materials.
Hope this helps

2012-08-20JAMES HESS: G-flex is an epoxy resin, standard boat stuff. I have had no problem with both water base & solvent finishes. Contact mfg. if you need more info, they are very helpful.
2012-08-20RAWLEY EVANS: I bought the G-flex with the same thing in mind. I just took a wire wheel to the boat, took off all the old paint down to the bare metal, applied the G-flex, let it set up and repainted it and have not had any trouble with it what-so-ever. hope this helps
2012-08-21DAVID MCNASH: Larry,
I won't be able to answer you questions since I was using the product on a radio controlled model Soling sailboat to seal the deck to the hull of the model boat. Sorry.
Dave
2012-08-24ROSLYN BOCK: We use this product as a wood filler. We only varnish over it and do not use any paint.
2012-08-12A shopper asked: will this adhere to polyethylene and or polypropylene?
+Expand Answers
2012-08-13RODNEY KIRTSINGER: I have only used it on metals. I would guess that the epoxy might not adhere to polypropylene because propylene has such a smooth surface. You need to do a test, if it does not work- at least you will have some fine epoxy for other products.
2012-08-13JANE SEA KAYAK CAROLINA: You should find the answer in the package leaflet, or go on line to read about G-Flex
2012-08-13PAT OTTON: Yes, Please see GFLex instructions for proper surface preparation. It may involve flame treating. I have had success using GFlex product to bond with both polyethylene and or polypropylene.
2012-08-13DENNIS BRINTON: I bought it in May, but have not used it yet. It was for repairing my camper. The rot was more extensive than I thought and took longer to cut out. I planned to use the West System G/Flex to re-attach the fiberrglass body panels to new plywood. I'm not at that step yet. I'm sorry I can't offer you more assistance.
2012-08-14Kevin Gardner: I used it to adhere polycarbonate to fiberglass and it worked very well. So I suspect it would work with PE or polypropylene as well, but have not used it to do so. I sanded the polycarbonate first to provide a rough surface.
2012-08-14PETER BACH: I have not personally used G Flex to repair plastics, but, West systems has instructions to repair plastic kayaks, which I believe are made from polyethylene.
You tube has several videos on the subject. I would suggest looking there.
Good luck
2012-08-14JOE PARKER: It was the only thing that worked to patch my sit on top kayak which I believe is polyethylene. So far it has held up great. I followed some hints on the web for prepping the surface and then just followed the instructions.
2012-08-15DAVID BIRNBAUM: I have an old plastic kayak that is rotomolded but not sure which poly is used. I took a chance and the G/Flex was wonderful. It stuck and sealed completely and it's flexible as advertised. A local Kayak shop told me about the kit.

2012-04-21KEVIN MALONEY asked: Can iron oxide be added to this product as a pigment?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-26DON RYAN: Don't know. Ask the west system people.
2012-04-26JOHN MILKEY: I do not see why not. It is a reasonably low viscosity product and it would likely wet out the iron oxide adequately.
2012-04-26Kevin Maloney: Thanks John,
I plan on making a Roubo style workbench that I want to fill in any minor defects in the surface of the wood top for which I will be using some Douglas Fir rough sawn timbers.

I holed my royalex canoe seal launching into a rock. I knew normal epoxy resins would be too stiff to last for a long time. Canoe shop owner suggested g-flex. I used 2 layers 6oz. fiberglass and the g-flex, repair done in the low 30's for temperature, certainly not ideal. Patch is holding well, and is not stiff like other resins.I like how this stuff flexes, and it's tough as well.

I have an old wooden ketch. I glassed the decks with 105/206 and biaxial cloth with mat. The glass extended over the top of the stem 9end grain). After a year or so, the glass separated from the end grain. I removed the old glass, drilled some holes in the end grain, filled the hole, glassed over with several layers of cloth (Gflex os too thick to soak into biaxial). Three years and is still good.

Comments about West System G/Flex Liquid Epoxy Kits:
I have three Pungo kayaks that were damaged from dragging them. The rudders were worn down and caused leaking. With kayak right side up, open the rear hatch, use 80g sandpaper to clean the surface inside and vacuum. Flip it upside down, clean the rudder area. Apply duct tape over the hole, flip right side up again, put a couple of small wood blocks to raise the front end angle so the epoxy settles and cures into the desired area. Pour a 50/50 mix of the epoxy into the back rudder area. The tape prevents leakage. Let dry overnight. Flip kayak over, use tape to reform the rudder creating a pocket for the epoxy. Set the angle again. Pour same 50/50 mix into pocket. Let dry overnight and you should be all set!

I used this epoxy to repair the hull of my 1/8 scale gas hydro rc boat, it had a major crack down one sponson & the center part of the hull! I just sanded the whole length of the damage, then let the epoxy set up for a while until it was thicker, then using a putty knife I filled the damage in completely with G-flex & it worked great! I never had any problems at all! this stuff works on all types of materials, is extremely strong, flexable, waterproof & shock resistant...what more could you ask for? HIGHLY RECCOMEMDED!

I use West System G/Flex to affix phenolic face plates to brass backing plates on croquet mallets used in US and International Croquet tournaments. Since switching to G/Flex, I have never had a bond fail, even under extremely high impact, a common problem when bonding two very unlike surfaces under high-impact and wet use conditions.
