2012-02-01MICHAEL CHEW asked: I have an older fiberglass kayak that is used for fishing on lakes and rivers.I was wondering if I put a layer of g/flex on the bottom, would this give it protection from the rocks I will inevitability hit or scrape across?Thank you.

2012-02-01WILLIAM AMMER: Michael,
The gflex is more of a glue than a coating and don't believe that it will offer any protection to your kayak.
2011-12-06RANDY B asked: I've worn through my kayak, probably from dragging over blacktop. I have a large piece I cut out of another kayak that I can form a patch to glue on. It will be used as a spare. I also have a fiberglass paddle that has a v-shaped piece broken out of it (I have the piece), and I have a crack in a plastic tub surround. I'm considering using G/flex for all three projects. I'm wondering whether to purchase the thickened epoxy or the regular, not knowing the consistency of either. I would probably priority the paddle repair, as repairing the kayak might be a longshot, and the tub surround is optional. Any input? Thanks!

2011-12-07EDDIE DUNCAN: The g-flex is great stuff, you will be able to repair both. One of my best friends is an outfitter and he recommended g-flex to me. He repaired a kayak that had been run over by a big ford pickup and had been broken in half. I have used different repair products over my 50 years of boating and this is the best repair product I have ever used. Go for it
2011-12-07Randy B: Thanks, Eddie! Any input on whether to use the thickened or regular for my application? - Randy
2011-12-07EDDIE DUNCAN: I have only used the regular and I think that would be fine but either would probably work. Another great thing about the g-flex is the price as compared to siilar products. You might want to try both as it is very inexpensive.
2011-12-07Randy B: Great point! I think I'll purchase the smaller amount in both the regular and thickened. Thanks!
2011-12-07ROCKY JENNINGS: Randy, I use the G/Flex thickened epoxy for all woodworking projects, including repairs. It stays in place, (little to no running), works well with hand and power tools, takes stain, and without stain finishes clear to blond. It should work very well for all your applications.
2011-12-07Randy B: Thanks!
2011-12-07MICHAEL STEWART: Use the thickened, it's not overly thick and will work very well for these uses, the thin I haven't tried but i suspect it is very thin and might be hard to keep in place till it cures.
Reinforce your patches with heavyweight fiberglass cloth and make sure you follow the directions for flame treating etc the surface on the plastic kayak. or it WILL NOT adhere..i tried it. Work indoors where it is warm, and wait 3 days before using the repaired part to allow a full cure.
The kayak repair should work, I have fixed huge cracks in whitewater kayks with this stuff and it worked for almost a year of crashing into boulders and going over small waterfalls, eventually it does break but only after extreme abuse. I suspect that on a flatwater kayak it should last just about forever.
2011-12-29PETER CRAIG: I've been a long-time user of regular G-flex and have recently bought a package of the thickened product to do the hinds of things you describe. The difference between the two is, simply, that the thci G-flex tends to stay where you put it. Regular product has a long working time and follows the law of gravity if given a chance.
My advice: carefully read the directions and all the additional instructional material on the Jamestown website (there's a lot). Pay particular attention to the parts which describe cleaning, roughening and flame-treating the polyethylene or other material you propose to glue.
Not sure why I've been chosen to give advice, but have done so because I've been so impressed by G-flex epoxy. Have used dozens of others before, and none can compare.

Very easy to use and formed a strong bond after drying. Can't comment on how durable it is as I just applied it two weeks ago but so far it's great.

Comments about WEST System G/flex Thickened Epoxy Adhesive Resin and Hardener Kit:
I used a kit and a half of this stuff to fix the six large and 24 small cracks in my Mad River Explorer as well as add two three layer skid plates. Following the guide in JD's "How To's" it came out great. I had one crack in particular that ran down below the water line that made me nervous. My brother and I took the canoe duck hunting last fall and when we got high-centered on a submerged log in some flooded timber one of us had to get out to get the canoe off the log. All 280 pounds of me was in the back, as well as my gear. When my brother started jumping up to push down on the front end better I thought "If it's gonna go, it's gonna go now!" The log was not far from the under waterline crack, but everything held beautifully! No leaks, and the hull still looks great. 1 free canoe + G-Flex + sweat = A GREAT DEAL.It would have cost me around $1800 to buy this canoe new! Thanks JD and Thank You G-Flex!

Comments about WEST System G/flex Thickened Epoxy Adhesive Resin and Hardener Kit:
G-Flex is amazing...I am a serious whitewater kayaker, I managed to break a BIG crack in the bottom of one of my boats, and it wasn't just a simple crack, it made a semi circular flap so this needed strength, not just to be filled in. This boat is made of unweldable cross link Poly ( a jackson kayak), so I had essentially written it off. I gave the G Flex a try, followed all the instructions ( grind out the crack like your welding it, abrade all surfaces, flame treat it, etc) and added a piece of glass cloth to the layup to reinforce it. This has held through some heavy duty rock bashing and small drops ( no big waterfalls , but still, a couple of feet onto rocks..) on three river trips so far and it's still going strong. One hint..don't skip the flame treatment, I experimented and it does NOT adhere without it, make sure you flame treat the whole area your applying it to.

Comments about WEST System G/flex Thickened Epoxy Adhesive Resin and Hardener Kit:
I repaired a teak hatch/seat for a propane locker. The seat came with the boat (46' staysail ketch) and was made with one piece of teak. The wood is badly checked and had two serious cracks along the grain, one of which went 5% through the piece. I broke along the worst crack, inserted three biscuits, used GFlex as an adhesive putting the sections back together (teak to teak). I then slathered on the Gflex on the bottom and screwed a piece of carbon fiber plate, securing it all together. So far, so good. Results will only truly be known in another month or so, but it is good enough that we are exploring its use to solve a particular challenge on a large new vessel under construction where I work.
