Unepoxy Standard is an affordable hard bottom paint designed to withstand season-long use. Unepoxy is a modified epoxy that dries to a hard finish that is effective in both fresh and salt water and strong enough for trailered boats.
This type of coating is effective against barnacles and other hard fouling pests in all water conditions. Unepoxy standard offers strong adhesion to fiberglass, wood and primed steel hulls. It can also be used over most previously applied bottom paints.
This bottom paint has high copper (cuprous oxide) content for its price point, making it a great value. Available in several colors.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Unepoxy Standard contains cuprous oxide. Therefore, there is a tendency for settling, especially if the paint has been on the shelf for several months. It is necessary to thoroughly mix the paint before using. If possible shake the can of paint on a mechanical paint shaker. Before applying the paint, check the sides and bottom of the can to make sure all the pigment has been mixed in. If mixing is going to be done with a wooden paddle or an electric drill mixer, pour off half of the liquid from the top of the can into another can and then properly mix in any settled pigment; then remix the two parts together thoroughly.
Adhere to all application instructions, precautions, conditions and limitations to obtain optimum performance. Refer to individual labels and tech sheets for detailed instructions when using associated products, etc. Do not thin Unepoxy Standard more than 10% (12 ounces per gallon) or inadequate paint film thickness will occur and premature erosion of the finish will be likely.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Coating performance, in general, is proportional to the degree of surface preparation. Follow recommendations carefully, avoiding shortcuts. Inadequate preparation of surfaces will virtually assure inadequate coating performance.
MAINTENANCE
No antifouling paint can be effective under all conditions of exposure. Man made pollution and natural occurrences can adversely affect antifouling paint performance. Extreme hot and cold water temperatures, silt, dirt, oil, brackish water and even electrolysis can ruin an antifouling paint. Therefore, we strongly suggest that the bottom of the boat be checked regularly to make sure it is clean and that no growth is occurring. Lightly scrub the bottom with a soft brush to remove anything from the antifouling paint surface. Scrubbing is particularly important with boats that are idle for extended periods of time. The coating is most effective when the boat is used periodically.

Questions & Answers about Pettit Unepoxy Standard Bottom Paint:
2013-05-22A shopper asked: what is the copper percentage?
2013-05-22JOHN SPARKS asked: I have a '53 Chris Craft cruiser that I have stripped to barewood and am planning on using Pettit unepoxy bottom paint. Other than thinning the first coat is there a sealer that I should use prior to painting? The boat will be on a trailer most of the time so antifouling is not a high priority. I am also planning on using Interlux Brown fairing below the waterline. It will be in a shed with low relative humidity.

2013-05-22GEORGE BOLLENBACHER: I'm more used to fiberglass than wood. On fiberglass most people put at least one coat of epoxy primer before the antifouling, primarily to avoid blisters. I don't think wood has the blistering problem, but I'm really not a wood expert.
2013-01-14JOHN KOLIHA asked: Most of the original application (2-year old) is fine. I have a few spots where the paint has been blasted off by the power washing. Can I just brush this one the cleaned hull? I plan to do the whole hull after this year. I am in fresh water (lake Erie).
+Expand Answers
2013-01-14GEORGE BOLLENBACHER: As long as the bottom structure isn't compromised, you should be able to spot-paint the bare spots. You might want to determine why those particular spots came off under power-washing, in case there is something going on that you should be aware of.
2013-01-14DAN ACKER: John,
I've done the same thing without a problem and I am in salt water. In
my experience bottom paints don't adhere evenly, but I like Unepoxy.
Dan
2013-01-14TIM BREWER: Yes, you can. I have done this in the past with good results
2013-01-14ALAN MCWHIRTER: Should not be a problem as Unepoxy is a forgiving paint. First scuff up the area with 80 grit sandpaper. I would take a look at where the paint came off to see if there might be an underlying cause.
2013-01-15ROBERT MOSIER: I used a roller for the application and it worked fine for touch up areas on the hull of a sailboat in fresh water.
2013-01-17MARK WALKER: Yes, with a little bit of light sanding it sticks really well. You should be able to do this several years in a row without doing the whole thing. I'm in the Gulf of Mexico and I add one of those big jars of cayenne pepper to every gallon, mix really well and it keeps the barnacles off nearly as well as that expensive paint with the copper in it. Guess the sea creatures aren't too excited about cayenne!
2012-06-19JIM MARRS asked: Can this paint be used above the waterline?
+Expand Answers
2012-06-19HENRY OGILBY: Hi Jim, I like this paint because it holds up well in a tough climate in Maine. I used it for bottom paint, but the edges of the hull and the bow area are out of the water when the boat sits at the mooring. No problems at all. Again I would recommend this paint highly based on my experience. Regards, Henry
2012-06-19DOUG BOND: Technically it's just paint (expensive) and sticks very well to whatever you choose to put it on. Cosmetically it dries to a dull flat appearance. Not sure why you would want to apply it above the waterline because its main benefit is killing marine growth. I wouldn't put it anywhere human contact is likely due to its toxicity. But if cosmetics aren't an issue then it will certainly keep something from corroding or rotting.
DB
2012-06-20GEORGE BOLLENBACHER: Yes, in fact people often apply bottom paint up to a few inches above the waterline to prevent the occasional barnacle. However, it's not shiny enough to cover the gelcoat on the hull. Is that what you are thinking?
2012-06-20TED JOACHIMOWSKI: I only used this below the water line. It has held up vary well and have use it for several years. Not sue how it will hold up above the water line
2012-06-20THOMAS BARTON: I only ever used it as a bottom piant to match what was there originally. Beyond that I am a complete novice.
Good luck Jim.
2012-06-21STEVE KOVACH: It can be used above the water line, but it is a rough finish which is designed to keep biological and plant life from adhereing to the hull. This would not be attractive as a finish for the whole boat .
2012-06-21MATT LEUPOLD: bottom paints don't do well above the waterline. since they are designed to be effective below water, they tend to dry out and peel after a few months out of water.
2012-06-24JOSEPH BOLAND: Jim,
I wouldn't use above the water line. You would be better off with a topside paint. This is a bottom paint that usually lasts 1-2 yrs.
Thanks,
Joe
2012-04-01A shopper asked: There are no clen up instuctions on the can. What do you use for clean up?
+Expand Answers
2012-04-02GEORGE BOLLENBACHER: Any paint thinner will work.
2012-04-02STEPHEN KAZMIERSKI: mineral spirits - paint thinner - turpentine...
2012-04-02BEVERLY PORTER: I use soap and water. Works well
2012-04-03WILLIAM WESTREM: Clean-up can be done with mineral spirits (paint thinner). Generally I simply dispose of the roller cover and a moderately priced brush, so minimal clean-up is required.
2012-04-03CARL GOTTWALD: I cleaned up with mineral spirits.
This is a great product- two years in salt water ( gulf) just one barnacle
2011-09-06A shopper asked: the color of this paint is called red, is that like a fire engine red or more of a rust colored red? I am looking for a rust colored red.
+Expand Answers
2011-09-06GEORGE BOLLENBACHER: It's not a bright red, but I wouldn't call it rust colored. More a darker, full-bodied red.
2011-09-06RICK BUSHIE: It is your standard 'bottom paint red'. rusty and dull. We called it bilge red in the navy. Hope that helps.
2011-09-06RICHARD GUANDALINI: it is more like a farm house barn red
not rust not fire engine but like a weathered barn red
2011-09-06MIKE POLZEN: It is a rust red and has a flat finish. Have a picture if need be of the boat or drips on the can if needed.
2011-09-06DAN ACKER: I USED THAT PRODUCT,BUT NOT THAT COLOR. I BOUGHT BLACK AND FOUND IT TO BE MORE OF A CHARCOAL. I WOULD CHECK AN ACTUAL COLOR CHART.
2011-09-06WEST CHOP CLUB C/O TIM HOYT: It is more of a rust colored red.
Tim
2011-09-06ALAN MCWHIRTER: Actually I bought a can of red and a can of blue. I didn't open the red as I changed my mind and used the blue instead - I'll use the red on another project. The blue is like any blue bottom paint I have seen and flat. I really don't know about the red - sorry!
2011-09-06MICHAEL WARREN: It dries a fairly dark red, certainly not fire engine red but not rust either.
2011-09-06TIM BREWER: This is much closer to a rust color than a true red.
2011-09-07DEAN DABOLINS: more rust color, barnacle protection was very good i would recomend it.

I ordered several cans from JD. All arrived with some dents, but one was severely dented - the crease ran from near the center of the bottom, through the seam, and halfway up the side of the can. It almost looked almost as if it had been deliberately smashed before being packed. The box and inner packing were intact, so whoever packed it must have seen the damage and packed it anyway. [...]

Good value for the price. Sticks well, goes on fairly easily, but you can really see the lines if you don't keep a wet edge.
