2012-04-25A shopper asked: I ordered this product thinking that it came with a sealer, it did not. I was then told to cut the varnish with mineral spirits 50/50. Does that sound right and how many coats should I put on?

2012-04-25JERRY A. OLSON: If you are putting System Three on bare wood, then cutting it 50/50 for a sealer makes sense to me.
I used System Three Varnish right out of the can as top coat for Silver Tip Epoxy. I did not thin it. Two coats gave me a brilliant shine on the exterior of the canoe. System Three Varnish runs with some ease on curved surfaces so one has to watch for runs and sags if you apply it to curved surfaces.
Check the product data sheet for manufacturer's instructions to be sure.
2012-04-25HENRY DALL: I believe that the first coat on bare wood may be cut with a 10% solution of spirits. All other coats, minimum of 5 for bare wood, go on at full strength. I've used it only at full strength on both bare wood and over their epoxy. Great product!
2012-04-26MARCEL SIMONEAU: Yes, this is correct, You want as much penetration as possible for a sealer. Cutting the product 50% will achieve this, and will be compatible with the top coats. Typically 1 sealer coat is sufficient, but for the best possible job, after the first coat, do a light sand, clean, and apply 1 more additional sealer coat. This is optimum for longevity. This insures that if you sanded through the 1st coat any where, (edges, etc.) you will re seal those areas. Also , the reduced product will dry, and cure quicker.
Then, sand all surfaces, clean, and apply 3 top coats, (light sand with 320 paper, clean between coats) reduced at about 20% at temps over 65 degrees.

2011-11-22JERRY A. OLSON: I put System Three varnish on my canoe, over System Three Silver Tip. It took 3 coats before it became glossy. The fourth and fifth coats gave me all I wanted for exterior gloss. I used a different brand matt finish on the interior. I think it just takes many coats to build up the finish. JA Olson

2011-11-23RICK SIMPSON: No, I guess you would call it more of a semi-gloss. After 3-4 coats it gets pretty glossy and if you do the recommended amount of coats it winds up glossy.
Best varnish I've ever used. Touch up time seems to be longer than most varnishes. True color of wood comes through better than traditional amber varnishes. I used it on cedar strip kayak over Three Systems Silver Tip epoxy. One coat is all that was needed.
