TotalBoat TotalFair Epoxy Fairing Compound

TotalBoat TotalFair is a lightweight two-component epoxy putty that can be used for fairing, filling, shaping, and repair. It has a convenient 1 to 1 mix ratio by volume that changes to a green color when the individual blue and yellow components are properly mixed. TotalFair has excellent sag resistance for application to vertical or inclined surfaces and is very easy to sand when cured. At 80°F, TotalFair is sandable in just 3 hours.

This fairing compound has excellent moisture resistance and can be used above or below the waterline on a variety of substrates; including fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), aluminum, steel, and wood.

Removed 2 factory-installed deadlights from my Balboa 26 to replace with hinged portholes and had to narrow the factory cutouts. After creating a somewhat ineffective form into which to lay the fiberglass cloth-and-resin I was left with irregular surfaces, concave here and proud there. Sanded down and started building up with this fairing comound. Great stuff! It's blue Part A and yellow Part B (to be mixed in equal measures) create a green blended product easy to confirm an effective and thorough blending and yeilding a forgiving and easily workable putty that dries to a readily-sanded firmness in about 3 hours. This is what fairing compound ought to be. Highly recommended. You'll need a non-absorbant palatte surface for mixing ( I used smooth cement board) but beyond that any drywall/putty/caulikng knife will work this stuff quite well.

The Total Fair works as intended and gave more working time compared to 3M, mixing up your own fairing compound is time consuming so the Total Fair is a perfect solution.
The only complaint I have is the pigment or the compound that is mixed with the resin, it could have been smoother, even after mixing well it had bits in the mixture, so making a smooth layer was difficult, I was using on an edge and it needed to be smooth. I hope the next batch is better.

Comments about TotalBoat TotalFair Epoxy Fairing Compound:

First time using this product so can only comment on application at this point. I used it to fill and fair out screw holes and gouges on the planks of my 1962 18' Plywood Runabout. East to mix, easy to apply, sands easily. Recommend that you plan to fill in multiple applications vs trying to get it in the first pass.

In the past I have used "Smith's Fill It" below the later line with excellent results. After nine years it is as solid as the day I applied it. My expectation is for this product to perform the same so we will see.

Comments about TotalBoat TotalFair Epoxy Fairing Compound:

Extracted the old shower stall on the rebuild of my Buccaneer 32 and started to repair a number of old screw holes, flaking gel coat and dings. Some of the holes went into encapsulated wood backing so I used Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy in the holes after freshening up the edges and then, after saturating the wood beneath, used Total Boat Epoxy Fairing Compound to top off and seal the holes themselves. I also used it to fair the flaked off areas of gel coat on several small areas of the shower stall base. It sanded down easily along with the rest of the fiberglass and left a perfect smooth surface to paint with epoxy non-skid.

          • Cast Iron Keel

Comments about TotalBoat TotalFair Epoxy Fairing Compound:

I used this to fair a cast iron keel that was in pretty bad shape. After sand blasting I used this 2 part epoxy filler. I was very pleased at how easy it was to mix and apply. I had plenty of time to work the product before it started to harden. Once it is fully cured, it is easy to sand and is very strong. It is supposed to be water proof and seal the metal. I will see when I pull the boat this fall. Using this combine with 4 coats of Total Boat epoxy primer, I feel very confident that the keel will be protected well. I finished the job with Total Boat Shark White Bottom paint. The keel looks fast just sitting on the hard. I like the Total Fair 2 part epoxy product so well that I am considering using this instead of body filler on my automotive repairs.

Comments about TotalBoat TotalFair Epoxy Fairing Compound:

I really like the 1:1 mixing ratio. The two components are nicely color coded blue and yellow to help mixing and create a nice green color. The putty spreads easily and smoothly and does not sag. It takes about 24 hours to really cure to a sand able state. It sands easily to a smooth surface that seems to hold primer well. Not a structural adhesive or filleting putty.

Like the 1:1 by volume mixing ratio. This filler has good working time, but the flip side of that coin is you can't be in a hurry to sand. Believe it when they say 3 hours cure time - this is not quick like the 3M products. Plan your work, and you will like this product.
