Meguiar's Marine

Since its beginnings over a century ago, Meguiar's has become the world's most respected manufacturer of cleaners, polishes, waxes, conditioners and protectants for every conceivable surface.

Basic Gel-Coat Maintenance

There are five basic elements in maintaining your boat or RV's finish:
    1. Washing: Remove loose dirt and grime sitting on top of the gel coat
    2. Cleaning: Remove dead gel coat (oxidation) and all foreign matter that cannot be removed by washing alone
    3. Polishing: To help provide a brilliant, high gloss
    4. Protection: Waxing will provide durable, long lasting protection
    5. Quick & Easy Maintenance: Frequent maintenance to remove contaminants without stripping wax protection

Decking, Swim Step, Teak

Teakwood is popular with boat owners because of its beauty, durability and the relatively little maintenance that is necessary to preserve its richness. If teak is regularly treated with teak oil it will keep its natural golden color. Meguiar's recommends using 3 coats of Teak Oil to clean, un-oiled teak, allowing a day of sun on each coat to enhance deep penetration of the oil. Badly stained teak may need to be treated with a bleach cleaner before applying the teak oil. Non-skid surfaces, like swim steps, should be cleaned with a product powerful enough to remove the ground-in dirt and grime easily, and one which is biodegradable as to not harm the marine environment.

Boat Covers, Bimini Tops & Awnings

One of the best investments you can make is a boat cover, it will make the surfaces on your boat last longer and you'll spend less time on cleaning and maintenance. Canvas boat covers, bimini tops and awnings can weather or fade over time when subjected to the elements and not treated properly. Cleaning covers with specialized products is important so they will safely remove the contaminants and not discolor the surface. In order to prevent this discoloration and fading (caused by suns UV rays), Meguiar's recommends applying a protective coating to any and all fabrics on your boat or RV. It is also important to waterproof you fabrics in order to prevent mildew.

Clear Plastics & Control Panels

Windshields, headlights, bridge enclosures, cockpit curtains, portholes and other clear plastic surfaces are easily scratched and dulled, obscuring visibility. When the wrong cleaning products are used they can worsen the problem. To restore clarity to dull and scratched surfaces, it is essential to use a cleaner specially made for clear plastic surfaces. These cleaners will remove scratches without causing scratching themselves, and are even safe on LEXAN polycarbonates as well as PLEXIGLAS acrylic surfaces. To help protect against re-scratching, apply a safe plastic polish frequently. This will help keep the surface protected against the elements and the plastic will be less susceptible to scratching.

Vinyl, Rubber & Exterior Seats

Surfaces like seats, pads, sidewalls, fenders, rub rails, etc. are constantly exposed to the elements. While new vinyl can be kept beautiful by treating it regularly with specially formulated vinyl cleaners and protectants, if it is not properly cared for it will deteriorate and become unattractive. It's important to clean your vinyl often to remove ingrained dirt and grime. Vinyl also need protection from the elements and the sun's harmful UV rays, otherwise it will crack and fade. A specialized product that cleans and protects will ensure your vinyl keeps its beauty despite the environmental elements. Heavily soiled vinyl requires a strong cleaner and a good stiff bristle brush. Meguiar's No. 39 safely removes even the most stubborn dirt. Once the vinyl is sufficiently cleaned it is important to follow up with a protective product to prevent aging.

Metal & Brightwork

The metal surfaces on your boat are extremely important in your maintenance program. Rusting and corrosion destroy not only the appearance and performance of metal parts, but also stain surrounding surfaces. Mequiar's No. 93 All-Metal polish is an ideal choice to clean, brighten and even give a light layer of protection from corrosion. Special care should be given to aluminum, brass, copper and magnesium because they oxidize quickly when they are left unprotected. They can also be scratched easily if the wrong cleaner is used, a coat of wax or specialized metal protection should be applied at the beginning and ending of each season to keep these soft metals in best kept "like new" condition

FAQ's

How should I care for the finish of my brand new boat (or RV)?
Wash your boat (or RV) frequently with Meguiar's specially formulated wash for gel coat, avoid using regular household detergents as they will strip your wax protection and accelerate oxidation. Immediately after washing, wax your boat or RV with a high quality wax formulated for gel coat surfaces, and then at the beginning and ending of each season to keep it look sharp and its finish protected.

How do I restore an oxidized finish on my boat (or RV)?
Before high gloss can be restored it is necessary to remove all the dead gel coat. Lightly oxidized gel coat can be easily restored with a liquid, non-abrasive cleaner/wax such as Meguiar's No. 50 Cleaner Wax. Unlike most cleaners, No. 50 Cleaner Wax is a one-step product that cleans chemically without using harsh abrasives, this is the only product a properly maintained gel coat will ever need. Moderate to heavily oxidized gel coats will require more intense measures, depending on the severity, the object to remove the layer of oxidized gel coat will require a cleaner or compound. After the oxidation has been removed, follow with a high gloss polish to restore gloss, and then a long-lasting wax to protect the newly restored finish. A simple, 3-step system can be found in Meguiar's Fiberglass Restoration System, which includes a cleaner, polish and wax.

How should I clean vinyl on my boat?
Vinyl surfaces, (seats, pads, sidewalls, fenders, etc.), are constantly exposed to the elements including the sun's UV rays, and if it is not properly cared for they can deteriorate and become unattractive. It's important to clean your vinyl often to remove ingrained dirt and grime with a product such as Meguiar's No. 57 Vinyl/Rubber Cleaner & Protectant. Heavily soiled surfaces might require a stronger cleaner and scrubbing with a nylon brush. To protect vinyl from fading and cracking you should apply a vinyl protectant frequently.

What is the difference between automotive waxes and marine/RV waxes?
Meguiar's Marine/RV products are specially formulated for gel coat and linear polyurethane (LP) surfaces, which are chemically different than automotive paints. Modern gel coats and LP coatings are harder and more water resistant than automotive paints. Their unique chemical compositions demand special ingredient that are specific to these marine uses and formulated for use in marine environments. Automotive products will not achieve the same high quality results on boats or RVs.

How do I clean clear plastic surfaces including eisenglass and plexiglass?
Clear plastic surfaces such as windshields, bridge enclosures, dodgers, cockpit curtains and portholes are easily scratched and dulled, obscuring visibility. This problem is aggravated when the wrong cleaning products are used. To restore clarity to dull and scratched surfaces, it is essential to use a cleaner specially made for clear plastic surfaces. Meguiar's has developed very effective plastic cleaners that remove scratches without causing scratching themselves. The products are even safe on delicate LEXAN polycarbonates as well as PLEXIGLASS acrylic surfaces. To help protect against re-scratching, apply a safe polish like Meguiar's Clear Plastic Polish frequently as it will help to keep the surface protected against the elements.

How do I maintain the appearance of the brightwork on my boat?
The metal surfaces on your boat are extremely important in your maintenance program; rusting and corrosion not only destroy the appearance and performance of metal parts, but also stain surrounding surfaces. To clean all metals including chrome, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper and magnesium, Meguiar's makes an All Metal Polish that cleans and brightens the surface and applies a light layer of protection from corrosion. Special care should be given to aluminum, brass, copper and magnesium as they oxidize quickly if they are left unprotected. They can also be scratched easily if the wrong cleaner is used. These soft metals are best kept in "like new" condition if protection is applied. Meguiar's Metal Guard applies a microscopic, long-lasting protective barrier to these metals that will prevent both marring and fading, and should be applied at the beginning and end of each season.
