How do I find out what kind of hydraulic fluid was put in my steering for my 2004 G3 pontoon boat with a 150hp Yamaha engine? Hose from top of console is empty but has a small dip with dried up residue that is dark in color that would lead me to believe that it is red. However, all I read tells me it was probably clear. Don't want to use wrong stuff. A Brissette

Thanks for the great advice. Did pick up seastar but hoping to find out for sure what's in there before adding it in. Hopefully, if it is not seastar, I can return it if unopened. Hard to find locally as we do not live near boating places. Once it's back home for storage, I'll make sure it's looked at by my boat mechanic to make sure there isn't a leak. Anita

Need to know what hydraulic steering your boat has. It is not related to the boat or motor. You can contact the steering company online and ask the question.

The only way to be 100% sure is to drain and purge the system. Someone may have used transmission fluid or something similar. SeaStar oil is expensive, but it does not take that much. Do the right thing and drain it. Bob N.

Recommend you identity the make and model of your steering pump then go to the manufactures website and down load the User's Manual. This is what I did when I bought a used boat with no manuals. The steering pump should have the manufactures information on the pump.

This is or was a new boat. Never been anything done to it. We bought it new. Thinking I might thread a piece of new white string trimmer line into tube and see what color comes out. What are your thoughts?

Anita, go to the Teleflex website and look at the instructions for your particular helm and steering cylinder. You will find the instructions for bleeding your system as you turn the helm all the way to starboard and port and open the appropriate bleed screws on the cylinder. Better yet, have the dealer that you bought the boat from check it. They should have delivered the boat after fully checking the systems.

is there a improper way to install a helm pump because the steering was with the motor when i purchased it and it was installed in the boat the way the old helm was installed and it was in a 45 degree angle in the center console. would this cause an air bubble in the helm pump and work out into the system after using it for a short period of time. there is no leaks showing anywhere but there still air getting into the system?

loosen the fill plug and turn steering wheel all the way to the right then back to the left all the way. keep doing this with the fill plug loose until the air is all out of the system...work for me...

Good question and I'm not sure of the answer. I would connect a clear rubber hose to the top fill portion and let the bubbles come up the tube rather than trying to fill the device at the angle that may trap the air. Then just follow the instructions on the video supplied by Jamestown. Worked great for me. Good luck!

My helm was already installed and it is at about a 45 degree angle as well. The hydraulic unit on the motor was leaking at the seals and the ram had been damaged by the previous owner so it made no sense to replace the seals because they would again start to leak as a result of the scratches on the ram. I purged the system as per the instructions provided with the new ram. Also there were several Utube videos I discovered that provided useful tips as well. I also wonder if you are using the filler bottle as instructed. I did and had no problems with bubbles once the unit was purged. Hope this helps

Michelle, unfortunately there is always a way to improperly install a hydraulic steering system. Go to the Teleflex web site and download the proper instructions so that you can double check the install. I believe that the steering helm which is the fluid resevoir along with the lines should have a tube going out of it's top and the tube should have a cap on it. The tube is for installing fluid in the helm pump and is necessary since the helm is at a 45 degree angle. The tube must be capped once fluid is installed. If I can help further, let me know. Yes the system is at that angle.I had to bleed the system for quite awhile before all the air was gone.You might try bleeding the system again until you absolutely don't have any air coming out whatsoever! I used up a whole quart of oil before all the air was gone! I hope this helps!!

It is highly important to follow the priming instructions provided with the new helm unit to make sure all air is purged from the system. Trapped air won't always work it's way out of the lines on it's own. The procedure is pretty similar to priming brake lines in a car making sure solid fluid is discharged after all the air bubbles are flushed out. If you use a clean container to recapture the fluid, don't be bashfull about doing a thorough job of flushing the hydraulic fluid since it cab be reused to fill the system if kept clean.

It appears that the Guide Tube (rod), is frozen into the Engine Tilt Tube. I am trying to loosen with WD-40 and gentle persuasion. No luck as yet. If there are any suggestions they would be most welcome. Wishing you all well, Paul

Dear Paul, So it looks like the problem is in the hydraulic steering, and from your description the cylinder at the engine seems to be bound. I would probably replace it ultimately. something I might try in the interim, and this is not a guaranteed or necessarily reliable fix, is to check to see how shiny the cylinder is as is comes out of the engine cylinder. You could try shining that up with steel wool, wiping it off carefully then spraying WD-40 of some other light lubricant on it in that sequence (wiping part is important) and then putting a pair of vice grips on the end of the rod (not on the shiny part) and try to rotate it slightly and fairly gently. the idea here is to break it loose. The hazards here are that you might very well ruin the seals on the cylinder. That would ruin it. The cylinders can be rebuilt. a lot of people don't recommend that. there are a lot of failures after rebuilding. An argument in favor of the twisting thing I described is that you don't have a lot to lose. Right now you don't have steering. If you ruin it you can replace that part. As I'm sure you have seen, Jamestown has the part. If you do replace it use the exact same cylinder model that is printed on the nameplate. Other models can give you the wrong number of wheel rotations lock-to-lock. If you use the Seastar series instead of the Baystar series, the hoses won't match. This is not the best news and not the perfect solution. It's the best I can give you. I change my name identification to Jay which is what I use

John, Well, I removed connecting rod and the motor turns nice and free. I always kept things pretty well lubricated but I guess I missed something. ha on me. The rod in the front cylinder wants to move when I turn the wheel but the (guide tube)? rod won't move? I'll keep at it. I'm a little lost. Wishing you well, Paul

John, Thanks so much for answering.. My boat is a 1997 19' Wahoo CC w/ a Mercury 125 offshore Engine. Whole boat always ran great. Not catching fish anymore took my zest away for awhile but now I feel the urge once again. I really want to put it back in good shape. Dear Paul, In my opinion, the hinge on the engine is more often the culprit for stiffness. The hydraulic systems are kind of self-lubricating and are more prone to leaks than stiffness. I would focus on getting grease into the engine hinge; not always and easy thing to do. With my current Yamaha 225 I disconnected the link from the engine to the hydraulic unit(doing this will confirm that the hinge is the source of the stiffness)then used a combination of the grease fitting (which seemed to be not enough)and working grease into the lower part of the hinge where the engine meets the bracket to loosen it up. This took multiple applications and a lot of working back and forth to work the grease in. It took me about an hour of working this back an forth to get improvement. Jay

i took me about a pint when I replaced the hydraulic piston at motor so I didn't have to drain steering pump completely. I dont see how it would take over a quart. PS a lot of what i used was for purging the system. ron-trinity tx.

get two bottles. when you fill the steering cable, steering cylinder, and the steering gearbox, it will likely consume all of one bottle and you will beed extra to "bleed" the system.

Don't know, but in my system it was emphatically emphasized that only H5606 G oil be used. I would not take a chance.

My Hynautic H-50 helm station is leaking oil so I need to rebuild it. This unit is on a 1990 Carver Mariner and the oil color is red which makes me believe it might be 5606 red aviation oil. I am not sure about adding the H5605 G oil to replace the lost fluid caused by the leaking seal.
