I have OEM johnson remote control for my 2002 johnson 25hp. I need two control cables, throttle and shift. Do they fasten to the engine using the same type of end connection for shift and throttle?
Asked on 05/26/2015 by gregg edwardsRecently had the same question when rigging my evinrude etec 200. I found that with omc, the throttle cable and shift cable were all the same, but referred to differently because of their function. The remote control used the same type cable for both throttle and shift. You should be alright on the Johnson 25hp, I believe all of those used the same type of rigging.
Answered on 05/27/2015 by JASON FONTANILLEYes. The throttle and shift cables are the same for each application. There is no specific "throttle" and "shift" cables. I think that because they are usually referred to as a pair in "I need to replace the throttle and shift cables" we often think that they are two different, specific cables. If you order two cables, one for throttle and one for shift, you can use either one for either application because the pair of cables will be identical. The ends of both cables are also identical. There is a specific end of the cable that you connect to the engine and one that you connect to the the control box, but the cables will be identical to each other and will fit on either the throttle or shift mechanism on your engine without any adapters.
Answered on 05/26/2015 by Douglas DThe connectors for the remote control cable are very different from the engine connectors. Once you've taken the remote apart then you'll be able to see the difference. Manuals are available and I strongly suggest you get one for your engine. Good Wrenches and Drivers to ya!!! Thom
Answered on 05/26/2015 by THOMAS CHEEKYes, the shift and throttle fasten to the engine using the same type of end connection. On my 2002 Johnson 25hp, the throttle cable has a small stainless steel clamp that can be easily removed from the old cable and reused with the new cable. The shift cable plugged directly on to a threaded post on the engine. The photo of the Teleflex cables on the JD website confused me. It's showing both ends of a single cable. I thought it showed a pair of cables and mistakenly ordered only one. Incidentally, JD shipped cables made by Seastar Solutions rather than Teleflex, but they seem well made. Finally, check that the fasteners holding the cable controls to the frame on the remote end are tight before you reassemble the remote. On my remote, the fastener holding the shift cable control assembly was loose and the remote didn't work the cable properly.
Answered on 05/26/2015 by PAUL MARAVELASIf I understand your question correctly, yes. It's the same connection and works for both the shift and throttle. Pretty easy to change. Just make sure on the length.
Answered on 05/26/2015 by ALBIN TARRYOK, the older model engine i had did have different connections pre 1979 at the engine side. Can you get the gauges (tach/system check) for the 2002 johnson engines?

Asked on 08/29/2017 by Pete from Whitesboro New YorkNo this is for 1979 and newer. Look at the Johnson/OMC Standard series CC17006 type.
