An awl is a woodworking tool used to mark a piece of wood. Consists of a wooden handle with a pointed, needle-shaped piece of steel extending from it. Awl handles are round or cylindrical and fit in the palm of your hand. A needle-shaped steel point ranges from a few millimeters to a centimeter thick at the base and tapers to a point sharp enough to scratch the surface of a piece of wood.
Japanese and German awls are good for a bunch of jobs, such as marking the point where you will start a drill, marking a line against a rule, or piercing a small hole in thinner materials. Jamestown Distributors carries different styles of awls to fit different needs.
