#6 Brass Wood Screws Round Head Slotted Customer Questions and Answers

Question

Are #6 1" screws the correct size to secure brass hinges and latches on an antique ice box?

Asked on 05/04/2013 by Frank Plant

Top Answer

Most hinges have tapered holes so the screw head would sit flush with the hinge when closing. This screw does NOT have a tapered head, therefore it would not be the right screw. If the hinge is in the outside, and does not close on itself, then this screw would work. I use these attractive screws to attach metal to my sculptures, but I am familiar with modern hinges.

Answer

I can't say unless I know the dimensions of the box and the hardware. In general, I prefer to use a FH screw and countersink the holes, but of course it depends on the original design.

Answer

They may be big enough, the hinge screws would be flat head not round head. The holes in the hinge should have a hole that is countersunk. The latch screws may have a round head. Check the hole on the latch to see if it is flush or countersunk. If flush you could use the round head if they don't interfere with the function of the latch parts.

Answer

I used #8 slotted flat head screws on the one I built. #6 heads were a little small.
