Buck Algonquin Bronze Round Oarlock Customer Questions and Answers

Question

what is your suggested method for securing the oar lock in the socket? Is there a bolt or special wire spring that can be secured to the oar lock to keep the lock in the socket?

There are a lot of conventions that I have seen. Some people pin them, some use a cotter ring, some people attach a few inches of fishing like or thin rope and tie a washer on the end (allows the oarlock to come out of the socket, but the oarlock stays attached to the socket--this is done when the boat needs to be flipped over or removed to get it out of the way). Some people just take a small piece of like and tie it off also.

Answer

Several options: a cotter pin will work, or use a clip pin that both goes through the hole and also around the shaft of the oarlock. Be sure to secure it to the gunwale with some fishing line or twine so it's there when you need it

Question

If I purchase the 7ft Canadian Spruce oars, what size of opening do i buy?

Buck, I don't know the specs of the oars you are buying, but from my experience I would buy the smallest opening that you can. If you are also buying collars for the oars then get something that will allow the oars with the collars to fit snug and the extra trim to hold the oar from slipping.

Answer

My oarlocks came with 2 inch openings. Unless you intend to put leathers on your oars, they should fit. Better yet, measure the thickness of the oars and if they are over 2 inches wide, they won't fit.
