I want to add a small boarding ladder (rope) to the transom of my 14 foot sailing boat, a Michalak Lady Bug. How much weight will these u-bolts handle and what should I use to back them so they don't pull out under pressure? Thanks!

The strength of the u-bolts will be comparable to the strength of similar ordinary bolts. The backing plate like the one included with stainless u-bolts will be very adequate. For a boarding ladder a 1/4" stainless u-bolt should be more than adequate.
