I want to add a small boarding ladder (rope) to the transom of my 14 foot sailing boat, a Michalak Lady Bug. How much weight will these u-bolts handle and what should I use to back them so they don't pull out under pressure? Thanks!

First of all, you should use stainless steel bolts instead of galvanized. You do not want rusty stains on a Lady Bug. The strength of the u-bolts will be comparable to the strength of similar ordinary bolts. The backing plate like the one included with stainless u-bolts will be very adequate. For a boarding ladder a 1/4" stainless u-bolt should be more than adequate.
