Answer

The strength is in the "by the yard direction+

Answer

They have no strength side to side in the fill direction. This UD does not wet out clear but has a volan, very light green, finish to it if that is a concern.

Answer Question

Question

HI, I am looking for fiberglass that when laid into 2-3 sheet layers it will have quite a bit of flex without breaking. I have done research and hope unidirectional fiberglass has these properties, but wanted to ask someone and make sure. The project will be similar to using fiberglass to make a bow (bows and arrows) . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Unidirectional with Totalboat 2:1 Epoxy Resin Kit will work the best.

Answer

UD when laid up properly will flex in the one direction but is not good if it is twisted or flex sideways. Epoxy resin will be more flexible than polyester or vinyl ester. Sounds Iike it will be supporting a core material so it should be good.

Answer

Hi, I have actually used the unidirectional cloth for making bow laminations for a hobby. If the flex is mainly in one direction then unidirectional cloth is better than woven but you can also use a combination of both woven (laid out at 45 degrees to the direction of flex) and unidirectional. The type of epoxy can be very important as well, you will want something with a high flexoral strength and how it is cured can make a big difference as well. Standard marine epoxy may not be sufficient.
