Question

Mounting this under vehicle (EuroVan) back of unit would be subject to moisture from rain splash. Do I need to mount in a waterproof enclosure for this type use?

Asked on 04/27/2015 by Robert M

Top Answer

It would be better if you did mount it in a waterproof enclosure since the back of the unit is normally not exposed to the elements.

Answer

Our shore line is mounted about 4 feet up, on the side of an ambulance. this allows the cover to drop over and thoroughly protect the plug-in from water. mounting the plug-in under a vehicle will allow the cover to fall open.

Answer

well, it does mount on the side of a boat and subject to water splashing on it quite often without damage or problems.

Answer

I would try to protect it as much as possible from the spray. I would also coat all the connections with a water proof Anti-Oxidation grease to prevent corrosion.

Answer

The receptacle itself has a watertight cap but this is for marine use. While it would probably be fine I expect there are a couple of variances that warrant extra protection. First is that this will be mounted on a vehicle where other hazards beside rain and road spray exist. If this receptacle is powered by an inverter that is on when the vehicle is running then you have a hot receptacle while driving. If there is a potential for icing that is another factor. I would suggest a weatherproof housing mounted higher up on the vehicle to avoid both contaminants and collision damage. A hardware store should have such an enclosure and if not then try an electrical supply shop.

Answer

Yes, a weatherproof enclosure can be purchased at any hardware store for this receptacle to insure that moisture and the elements stay out.

Answer

The unit seals the hole with a gasket. The connector area is waterproof. I have mine installed on my boat (salt water), for quite a while, and I have had no issues.
