Interlux Compass Clear Varnish is a one-part polyurethane high-gloss varnish that is highly durable. It contains a unique combination of antioxidants, HALS and ultra-violet additives that provides a long lasting clarity and gloss. The polyurethane resin provides excellent resistance to abrasions, water and chemicals.

Compass Clear Varnish can be used on all internal and external woods and can also be applied directly to oily woods such as teak. The varnish's bright, clear, high-gloss finish allows the natural color of the wood to show through.

Preparation

Bare Wood:

Sand surface smooth with 80 grit production sandpaper. Wipe clean. To enhance the appearance of the wood and fill porous, open grain, apply Interstain paste wood filler and stain according to label directions. Apply a sealer coat of varnish reduced 10-15% with the appropriate thinner.

Previously Varnished Surfaces:

In Good Condition - Sand old finish thoroughly with 120-150 grit production sandpaper, being sure not to sand through the paste wood filler stain. Wipe clean and finish with at least 2 coats of varnish. Sand between each coat and wipe clean using Brushing Liquid 333.

In Poor Condition - Remove finish to bare wood with Interlux Interstrip 299E. Follow directions for varnishing bare wood.

Bare Plywood:

Seal with one or two coats of Inter-Prime Wood Sealer Clear 1026 or Clear Wood Sealer YVA327/YVA328

Method

After sealer coat - apply 4-6 coats of full bodied varnish until a satisfactory finish is obtained. Sand the surface lightly between each coat with 220-320 grit sandpaper. Remove sanding dust by wiping clean with a rag that has been dampened with Brushing Liquid 333.

Hints

Thinner: Brush - use Brushing Liquid 333. Spray - use Special Thinner 216.

Thinning: Thin 10-15% on first coat and 10% maximum on subsequent coats.

Airless Spray: Pressure: 170 bar/2500 psi. Tip Size: 0.33-0.41 mm/13-16 thou.

Extremely slow to dry.
By Bill from Bristol, RI

I wish I had seen the other reviews before purchasing this. This varnish takes far too long to dry. It got "tacky" after 3-4 hours, and is still "tacky" almost 20 hours later! The varnish has to be sanded before another coat is applied, so you have to wait for the varnish to thoroughly dry. This varnish is just too impractical and inconvenient to use: maybe OK if you have an entire week to apply varnish in a protected location. The excessively long drying time also increases the likelihood of dust affecting the finish. Interesting that the can does not indicate drying time. I thought the color of the varnish in the can was darker than I expected for a "clear" varnish.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

Slowwwww revisited
By Scott from Vermont

I wrote earlier this stuff dries slow...it does. So I feared it was going to sand like a rubber ball...I was wrong! It sands (dry 400g) (36 hours) later like a DREAM!! Not even a hint of gumming the paper. The clarity of this finish is amazing. It won't replace Captain's 1015, but it certainly has earned a place on my shelf. For reasons unknown, the second coat dried faster than the first.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend
