Technical Specifications

Surface Preparation: Wood must be clean, dry and properly prepared prior to varnishing or painting. When sanding wood, always sand with the grain. Use a vacuum, air hose, or tack rag to remove all traces of sanding residue. Follow all surface preparation steps carefully, avoiding shortcuts. Inadequate surface preparation will virtually assure inadequate performance.

Application Information: Stir 2018 EZ WoodSealer before application. 2018 EZ WoodSealer may be applied by brush, conventional or airless spray. Thinning is not normally required although on very warm days use Pettit 120 Brushing Thinner at 5-10% by volume to ease brushing and maintain good flow. When spraying, use Pettit 121 Spraying Thinner up to 20% by volume. Spray an even, wet coat to minimize orange peel. Do not apply 2018 EZ WoodSealer on extremely humid days or when rain is threatening. Do not apply in the late afternoon when working outdoors as the wet film may be adversely affected by dew. On fir or any wood that has a large hard grain pattern wipe with dry rags while the sealer is wet to remove the excess from the hard grain areas. 2018 EZ WoodSealer is not completely absorbed into the hard grain.

Systems

Bare Wood: Sand surface completely smooth with 220 grit sandpaper. Wipe surface to remove sanding residue with a tack rag or a rag dampened with Pettit 120 Brushing Thinner. Apply a coat of Filler Stain per the label instructions to achieve a smoother finish on open grained woods such as mahogany, oak, ash, etc. Let dry overnight. Skip the last step if filler stain is not desired. Apply a generous coat of this product. Let it dry overnight, and sand thoroughly with 220 grit sandpaper. On especially rough or porous wood, a second coat of this product may be applied. If applied, sand the second coat as well and wipe the surface clean with a tack rag or a rag dampened with Pettit 120 Brushing Thinner.

Varnished Wood in Poor Condition: Remove all old varnish with a paint and varnish remover or by sanding. Bleach the wood if necessary to remove water stains. Proceed with the system for bare wood shown above.

Oily Woods/ Bare Teak*: Sand the wood smooth with 120 grit production paper to open up the grain. Wipe the surface thoroughly with Pettit 121 Spraying Thinner in an effort to aggressively remove as much oil as possible. Apply a generous coat of this product. After a six hour dry, lightly sand the surface with 220 grit sandpaper. Apply your Pettit, Z*Spar or Shipendec finish per label instructions.

*It should be noted that woods with a high oil content may eventually experience adhesion problems as there is no way to totally eliminate the oil and prevent it from migrating to the surface. However, this application technique has proven successful in most circumstances.

Excellent product for making varnish work easy and beautiful

I have been using this product close to 30 years. Sets up a solid base for applying varnish. I find two coats of it on bare wood is like 4 coats of varnish.

Petit EZ wood sealer

I used this product with a medium bristle trim brush to even out the bare wood spruce ribs on a wooden boat I am building. it's viscosity (flow) is like a thin paint. It went on well and looks fine. Unfortunately, I think I am going to have to sand to get an even surface before painting. I probably should have wiped off the excess before allowing it to dry

Q: null Can I use your total boat epoxy resin ontop of the EZwood sealer?

A: Personally I would not recommend applying epoxy over a sealed surface. I assume that a good bond requires some penetration of the resin into the fiber space of the wood. That said, a good sanding of the opposed bonding surfaces could well permit adequate penetration. It's what I would do in this situation. If possible, reinforce with a screw. Q: null Primer coat I have a Mirror Dinghy ( small wooden dinghy style sailboat). Have removed all of the old paint and am down to bare wood. What wood primer and quantity would you suggest. The boat size is approx 11' long by 4' wide. The boat will be in fresh water only when used. I assume I would need enough to make 2-3 coats. Also you may suggest a final bottom paint as well. A: I use Petit EZ WoodSealer 2018 for the first two coats after applying a filler stain on mahogany planks (both old and new mahogany planking. This worked very well without lifting the stain or smudging. I then varnished with Epiphany clear varnish with good success over this filler.

Q: null Goodevening, Can I uses this product as a wood preserver on 100year old windows (sound structural condition)prior to painting with a + 45% titanium oxide paint?

A: This is a great product. Gives would an amber luster. However, you would need to reapply this sealer at regular intervals. It contains tung oil and I would be concerned about the paint adhering to the finish and do not think this is the right product for your application. I would go with a plain wood sealer. Interlux makes a great one which is paintable over. Hope this helps.

A: Thanks Doug for the input..... am going to do the sealer in a couple of days..... do you wait between coats? or do you do 2 coats in a day... and then allow to dry 2 days?? I also have surfaces that are overhead horizontal and was wondering how the brush would work in these situations.... would a foam roller be better in this cast... or would that disturb the stain? also, is the 1st coat of varnish thinned down 25% or? Again .... thanks for your input.....
