Question

I bought a rotary style system from a guy, used, and need to replace the cable with a longer cable. The numbers on the current cable have been made illegible over time. I am uncertain on the mechanical rotary system whether it needs a special cable or whether the standard cable is what I need?

Asked on 11/21/2015 by DAVID SORRICK

Just measure cable per instructions and order that length.

Answer

I just replaced mine and i found the youtube video from teleflex helpful. I ended up taking my old cable out and measuring it. They tell you how. My new cable fit ok. I ended up having to loosen my outboard at the transom to get the clearance to insert the new cable.

Answer Question

Question

Jamestown video on replacing the steering cable shows cutting away the bulkhead where the cable enters the stern area of the boat adjacent to the motor. My 2005 Boston Whaler 180 Dauntless does not allow for me to extract the cable from the from tilt tube and a blog I read from Continuous wave states I need to dismount the engine. Obviously dismounting a 135 hp Mercury will mean getting professional help. But, can you show me, if I were to cut out the bulkhead of the engine well in order to remove the steeering cable from the tilt tube, how would I reconstruct that cut out to limit water and contamination from getting into the bilge area.

Asked on 06/14/2020 by Tom S from Annapolis, MD

Top Answer

Do not even consider cutting the hull for this project! Many auto parts stores will rent or loan an engine hoist. There are only four bolts holding the engine on. If needed the control cables can easily be disconnected.
