Service Considerations for Teleflex Hydraulic Steering Systems

Technical Reference Manual

What to Consider when Servicing Steering:

When servicing a steering system, thoroughly diagnose the problem(s) first.

Determine which components of the steering system need to be replaced.

Replace components that show signs of excessive physical wear, including slop, charging, corrosion, leakage, etc.

If there is excessive motion, binding or "rough spots" in the steering, determine the cause and replace the problem component.

When using Teleflex products to replace other manufacturers' steering, the whole system must be replaced.

Many repair parts are available for hydraulic steering, depending on the age and type of system:

  • SeaStar systems made after 1991, as well as most Capilano and Hynautic systems.
  • Present SeaStar helms and cylinders are compatible with pre-1991 SeaStar systems, but some cases will require a dash mounting kit when gitting a new helm.
  • SeaStar and/or Hynautic components are available for repair or component replacement when servicing Hynautic steering systems.

For other brands and SyTen, the system must be completely replaced.

SeaStar hydraulic steering offers:

  • Helms (Hydraulic pump)
  • Hoses
  • Helm Mounting Kits (variety of helm setbacks and mounting angles)
  • Tie Bars (for duel or triple engines)
  • Fitting Kits (for duel stations, autopilots, through bulkhead applications, etc.)
  • Steering Wheels
  • Tilt Steering option

Sea Star hydraulic steering can be identified by decals affixed to the helms and cylinders.
