How is a Marine Stereo Different?

True marine audio and video systems are made to standards above the grade of car stereos and video. Unlike your standard household electronics, most marine electronics are made to run off battery power (typically 12V DC) rather than household electric voltage (120V AC). To be considered marinized, units should pass a saltwater exposure test meaning it can withstand weather on an open deck. Marinized electronics will often have the IPX6 or IPX7 rating. This means the product was tested to earn the standard of safety and submersion tolerance. IPX6 is a common rating, meaning the product has been tested for International Protection Rating and proven to withstand powerful water jets. "Water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects." This is what the 6 of IPX6 represents. IPX7 is a higher tolerance against water, meaning it can withstand immersion up to 1 meter. Another consideration aside from the quality of performance that any marine stereo or video/television touts, is energy usage, quantified in amps. The higher the amp draw the faster it will deplete any limited reserve of battery capacity or load a working generator. This is less of a concern for electronics that will run only off of shorepower when dockside.
