Collinite Wax FAQs and Tips
There are two types of Fleetwax. 870 is a liquid cleaner wax combo that works well on less pristine fiberglass surfaces. It removes contaminants and leaves behind a protective high gloss shine. Fleetwax 885 is a hard paste and contains zero cleaners, abrasives, or restoration compounds. It is best used on prepared surfaces for maximum shine and marine weather protection.
If your boat's gelcoat finish is slightly oxidized or weathered, washing and waxing won't bring out the shine you are looking for. Collinite recommends washing thoroughly, then using 920 Fiberglass cleaner to remove contaminants before 885 Fleetwax.
Apply a thin coat of wax using an applicator pad to a clean section no larger than 2X 2 ft at a time. When wax begins to dry (when it turns to a light, hazy residue), remove with dry microfiber towel or cotton cloth.
For best results, do not apply hot surfaces or in direct sunlight. Collinite recommends waxing between 55 and 80 degrees F when possible. Note that is the air temperature. Ideally, surface temperature is lukewarm or close to room temp. Hot surfaces don't allow wax to bond to the surface properly and drying times are extended. Attempting to remove wax before it is sufficiently dry will result in smearing. Alternately, a cold surface results in wax drying too quickly. This makes it harder to remove. Under normal conditions, 885 will dry in 3-4 minutes on average. Wind, humidity, and heat/sun exposure can affect dry times. Remove once hazing is apparent.
Boats, personal watercraft, RVs, aircraft...especially hulls, rails, topsides
Exterior gel coat, fiberglass, clear coat, and finished wood
Painted plastic and both painted/unpainted metals including chrome, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and brass
Do not use on rubber, non skid surfaces, black trim, vinyl, glass, or un-painted plastic
Will collinite 885 work over painted boat, or is there a better alternative?
Most boat paint manufacturers recommend not waxing for a period of time or not at all - check to make sure waxing is OK.I used Fleetwax for many years to wax my painted boat once the original shine of the paint faded.
I can't advise on this as I've only used this great product on fiberglass gel coat.
There is no better alternative than the 885. I use it on boat gelcoat, boat paint, car paint, etc.
I have used 885 for decades. It works fine over a painted stripe on my boat. I have also used it on automobiles with excellent results.
Once you have waxed with 885- what's the best boat soap to clean and maintain shine, as to not remove wax?
Thanks Robert- I'm trying to be pro-active. Rubbing out and waxing a 30 year old boat was not one of my favorite things to do. In the past, I've used other waxes and did not hold up well- thinking it might be the multiple boat washes of different brands.
I bought the wax for the fiberglass on my Hightop Van, not for a boat. I use any car wash soap for my Van and it seems to work well on both the fiberglass and metal.
My car is 2001 chevy prizm. My neighbor uses this wax on his 2011 truck and it looks sales floor new. My car is recently repainted. Can I use this wax on it by itself or should I use something else first?
I have been using Collonite products since 2005. Learned about them from a professional boat maintenance expert. You must always use Collinite 920 cleaner before using the wax. The cleaner should be applied in small areas, about 2' x 2'. You do not wait for it to dry, in fact don't let it dry. Rub off immediately. When you apply the wax in the same small areas, it will rub off easily because the surface has been prepped by the cleaner. This sounds like a lot of work, but it is well worth the effort. Collinite is idiot proof in that it works in the sun and you do not wait for it to haze or dry. Put if on, rub it off. I use of fiberglass and my cars and my air conditioner housing. Everything looks brand new.
I would check with the manufacture of the paint to make sure there are no compatibility issues and to find out when the paint is completely cured.
Hello, Collinite would be very good for a car. I have a few cars I take to shows as well as use on my boats, and this is a product that always stands out. Just make sure your car is very clean as Collinite is just a wax. It has no abrasives in it. Enjoy
Will this wax remove mild gelcoat oxidation and prevent future oxidation? My bass boat sits out in the weather year round. It's hot in Tuscaloosa, AL. ROLL TIDE ROLL
Collinite Heavy Duty Paste Fleetwax 885 is designed to work with the Collinite 920 Fiberglass Boat Cleaner. You must first use the Cleaner. THe cleaner will remove almost any gelcoat deficiency from rust, sun, yellowing etal. GOING TO WAX FIRST IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. You must first remove the crude that is on the gelcoat with the companion 920 Cleaner. Then you use the wax. Use No. 920 cleaner and follow directions exactly. Do this in small sections about 2 x 2 feet. Rub on and wipe off immediately. DO NOT Wait for it to glaze. You will regret that. After you have cleaned the entire boat, use the wax on the same size small sections. The waxing is made ten times easier once you have removed the oxidation with the Cleaner. It is a miracle. Follow wax directions exactly, apply wax and remove DO NOT wait for this to haze. You will also regret doing that. Work in small sections. This is so worth the extra effort. You will find using the Collinite products easier in the long run. It is idiot proof. No need to watch it "Haze". You just apply, remove. Apply - remove. You get the idea. Our boat is 2002 trawler. Nothing used on it but 920 cleaner and 885 wax. Always done by hand 3 times per year. Boat looks brand new. People think it is a new boat. No other boat in our marina, including the 100-foot professionally maintained megayachts, look as good as our little "tiny" 39-foor trawler. You will thank yourself every time you do this. Your boat will look better and better as you get better and better as the process. 920 cleaner also excellent for removing the crud that fogs your auto headlamps. We use Collinite 920 and 885 on both of our cars. I use on the HVAC outside unit. It looks brand new. This stuff is a miracle. Just needs some elbow grease.Happy waxing, Kay Moore
I actually use a set of products not sold by JD. They're made by Gel Coat Labs and sold by FourStarProducts. Depending upon your needs, I would think that the Fine Cut Polish or Micro-Polish would work well. You will probably need to machine this product in. Most of the time I don't need to use a Polish product. I apply a final coat of their sealant mixed with the Fleetwax 885 by hand. This provides a long lasting coating. I coat twice a year: at the beginning of cruising season and at the end and constantly get comments on how great the boat looks. Note that BlueJacket is a 1997 Freedom and spends most of its time in the Caribbean or Pacific where the sun is VERY tough on boats.
What products and steps do you recommend to removemild top surface oxidation? What products do yourecommend to maintain the finish with the boat remaining outside/uncovered?
Not sure if it will. I used it after i buffed the boat with a mild cleaner.
No it won't remove oxidation. This is a wax & has no abrasives in it.
We have no oxidation and use Collinite 920 cleaner before waxing. It has a very mild abrasive. If you have oxidation, consult the Collonite website for the best prep for the way.Jay Moore
How do you get dirt out of the wax after rain without removing the wax: we have brown/black streaks all over the boat now?
It did exactly this for me. I've used Collinite for years. It is an excellent product - tough and durable.
After using CLT-920 to clean & prepare the surface, the waxing went very smoothly. After taking the wax off I used an electric buffer with a polishing pad to really bring out the shine. I should have taken before & after pictures, what a difference!

Reputation well deserved
There's a reason the pros recommend Collinite. I've received many compliments on my boat's shine.
Heart Attack Wax
It is difficult to apply and remove this product efficiently on larger vessels
EASY ON- EASY OFFLASTS A LONG TIME
This is the best wax on the market.
I keep buying this year after year!!
Having used this wax for over 25 years, I have introduced numerous friends to it, and instructed them on the proper way to apply. It is easy to use with very little effort, if you follow the directions. Everyone thinks it is the best they have ever used. Shines, lasts, and protects like none other. Makes me look good!!

I just had my boat painted w/ two stage urethane. it was getting scuffs and scratches like crazy from bungie cords etc. collinite fiberglass cleaner took those off w/ ease like butter- and i was able to do two coats of fleetwax (inside and out) on a 16' cabin boat in one day. real easy to use. just go by their instructions and do small areas at a time before it hardens. stuff is very durable. not even bungies make a mark now. i have to watch where i place objects on my gunwales tho cuz with the new superslick surface they go slip-sliding away fast. highly recommend this product. leaves a very glassy finish.
The ultimate sheen of most waxes
Long lasting and best sheen on the market but hard to remove. A wet applicator is key and rub out immediatly. Rain will stain it and it cannot be washed out. A cleaner wax has to remove the stains. Collinite 870wax is the better product to work with but is not as cost effective or long lasting as paste.
Tough long lasting finish
I have been using Fleet Wax for about 15 years for both cars and a sailboat. Great protection for cars stored outdoors. Beats teflon and other marine coatings for protecting gelcoat. May need to prep gelcoat with polish such as a clor restorer for best results.
Simply the best paste wax for fiberglass
Simply the best paste wax available for fiberglass. Goes on easy. Use between 50-70 degrees for best results. Don't waste your money on others more expensive waxes. This is the best.Buy from Jamestown.. they have the best prices on the Collinite brands. They double package everything so no worries about a leaking bottle.
