Board Defense is an EPA registered insecticide, termiticide and fungicide concentrate for the control of wood destroying insects and rot. This highly versatile conectrate protects and treats wood against all wood destroying organisms.
Board Defense is a water-soluble white powder. It can be used dry or in solution to form an effective penetrating solution. There are no hazardous solvents and no odors. The active ingredient in Board Defense, Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate, is a borate derivative that will not break down over time. Borates have been used as a safe and effective pest control for over 40 years.
Board Defense in an important part of the System Three EndRot System for wood rot repair and a favorite among wooden boat restorers.
Product is mixed with water and would soak in to dry or wet but is less likely to soak into saturated wood. Also is product being applied on wood laying down or on vertical this would make a differenceThanks ,Mike h
will it penetrate wet wood ?
Yes it will penetrate wet wood very nicely. I found that you can put the borate powder in a little water and apply with a brush. Once the water dries it leaves behind a white powdery residue of the borate powder.
What is the ratio to water? Also what is the "sqft" coverage of the 1# bag? This will be used to treat new lumber for the decking of a front porch.
Standard preventative application is of 10% or 15% solutions; to achieve ~10% solution, mix one lb of powder to one gallon warm water and agitate. Coverage of 1 gallon of 10% solution = ~100 sq. ft. Best to spray the wood down lightly, let it sit until the solution is absorbed, and spray it down again; repeat until the solution is used up. Such topical application is for unpainted/unfinished wood only; painted or finished wood requires injections (drilling and filling). If you're lucky enough to have an old house, heartwood, due to its high resin/oil content absorbs aqueous solutions (and thus the suspended borates) less readily than sapwood, but happily is also less susceptible to rot and insect infestation.
I'm curious about the same, sqft, except for a living room cleared down to the studs. About 400 sqft, how much borate should I buy?
How long is the shelf life of and unopened conatiner? How long is the life of an open container? How is it mixed? How is it applied? What precautions Should be taken?Do you have a video or webpage info?
The System Three People told me that as long as the borate is kept dry it has infinite shelf life. Mixing takes time because the borate is slow to dissolve. I always made a saturated solution and applied it with a brush wearing gloves but I;m not sure the gloves are necessary. Then it dries the surface will show tiny crystals and that suggest to me that I got enough on the wood. I used the borate powder with the borate rods and since the repairs are only now gogin through their first winter, it isn't clear yet how well everything will hold up. The repairs also used the System Three epoxy puddy which seems quite sound. Again, not enough time.
All borate compounds become boric acid and are stable. Wastage by contamination is more of a concern. Keep it dry and contained.I use an ounce per gallon in a lawn sprayer and hit all exposed and hidden areas in my wooden hull. The low toxicity of boric acid makes it safe for people to use in enclosed spaces as long as they avoid eye and skin contact as much as practicable.
Really did the job
This purchase was for joists in an older porch that were showing some rot infestation. We applied two coats as directed using a common pesticide-type sprayer. The effect was excellent and the rot retardation visible. We still had to sister or replace where the rot was more severe but this product was a tremendous time and money saver. We're switching sides of the porch for phase two and will be ordering more.

Destroys and treats wood rot
I rebuilt my boat transom and needed a fungicide to control/treat the wood rot . After the removal of the infected wood , I received the Borate powder, I mixed the solution and treated the infected areas. I would like to know if the fungi was totally destroyed .
I mI may need more
Was the only product I found that could be shipped to a New York address for controlling powder post beetle in my 200+ year old house
South Lima, NY
This is an excellent product.
I had a seriously rotted 200-year-old beam that I applied it to. I followed mixing and application directions which were very clear. This was the first step in restoring the beam. It took two days to dry because of the location. I followed it with application of the epoxy. Next will be filling the beam and inserting reinforced iron bar. Your site provided me with the most complete information, both video and written. Comparing all the products that I found on the internet, I selected this because of price and informational support. Cutomer service was also very good.
