A pure, distilled solvent from pine sap that provides a superior thinner for oil based paints, varnish, enamel, wood stains, and polyurethanes. Turpentine is a thin volatile essential oil, C 10 H 16 , obtained by steam distillation or other means from the wood or exudate of certain pine trees and used as a paint thinner, solvent, and medicinally as a liniment. Also called oil of turpentine or spirit of turpentine.

In spite of revolutionary developments in the paint and coatings industry, oil based paints, varnishes and oil finishes are still considered best for colour quality, durability and easy maintenance. As long as these coatings maintain their superior reputation, pure Turpentine will remain as the best thinner and cleaner available. There are less expensive alternatives, but to achieve excellent paint consistency and avoid the rapid drying of other thinners, nothing else can outperform pure Turpentine. Most paint thinners are petroleum distillates that evaporate quickly. This can cause filming of colour in fine art painting and uneven coverage if used as a thinner for house paint.

As a brush cleaner, Turpentine is gentle on expensive natural bristles. Turpentine is also an essential ingredient in the mixture used to create an antique oiled finish on fine furniture.
