After applying with a brush, do I wipe of the excess like a stain or just put it on like a paint?
This is a thicker material like a paint, you will want to apply a thin even coat. Try and avoid pooling, if the product is applied too thin it will not level or coat as well as it can, but if it is too thick it may take longer to cure, and can have a gummy feel for a while.

Can Cetol Marine be used on Sapele Mahogany that has had several coats of tung oil applied? if so, what is the recommended procedure. If not, what would you recommend for the finish? Thank you.
Cetol Marine can absolutely be applied to Sapele. You may want to wipe the surface with acetone to help remove any extra tung oil. Some of these coatings will not bond to the oily surface. Cetol Marine will have a little bit of an orange/mandarin opacity that will hide the grain if you build up too many coats over time as well. Wood finishes like this have a color tint in them that looks nice, but can eventually hide much of the natural wood look with too many coats and sun exposure. Annual maintenance coats are super easy for this product.

I have applied 3 coats of Cetol Marine Natural Teak and am going to add 3 coats of Cetol Marine Gloss. I finished my 3 coats of Natural Teak a week ago, and we have had a solid week of rain since then. Coats were dried enough before the rain and still look great. My question is what should I use now to wipe everything down before applying the Gloss. Mineral Sprites, Acetone, Xylene, just a tack rag or something else?
Interlux recommends to clean the surface thoroughly with a detergent cleaner, rinsing afterwards with fresh water, and allow to dry thoroughly. Solvents should not be needed, and depending on which one is used, may do damage to the previous coats.

Is there a common over the counter brush cleaning product for Cetol brushes that I can use of a very small job? Hate to spend a lot to wash one brush. Thanks for your advice.John
John,I simply use a "paint thinner" ( basically mineral spirits) to clean the brush. I have a gallon "waste solvent" can and funnel. In a very small can or jar, I put a shot full of clean solvent / slosh the brush around and dump the solvent until the brush is clean. I do this about 4 times. You will only create a little bit of waste. If you use good brushes, it is what you will do. I place the cover back on the gallon waste pail until next time. When I fill the gallon pail I have a number of ways to properly dispose of it.
First clean with mineral spirits. Then I like to use a brush cleaner for the final cleaning.https://< a href="http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=157" target="_blank">www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=157< /a>
I used paint thinner or whatever from WalMart.

Can Cetol be applied over teak previously finished with teak oil or must all the oil finish be sanded off?
Thanks Gary. ----Nate
If you're just looking to preserve the wood the Cetol works great. I've been going over old teak for years after light sanding . Caution though if you're looking for it to look its best , then sanding it down and redoing it is obviously the way to go.
The bright work on our C&C Landfall 35 was finished with Cetol when we bought the boat in 2012. I do not know what it was finished with prior to the Cetol. Probably multiple finishes because it was built in 1983. I used a scraper and then lightly sanded it before I applied three coats of Cetol. We sold the boat immediately after I applied the Cetol. The boat is still in our marina and remains looking great.
how long can you keep Cetol Marine?
We are still using a can that is a couple of years old. There seems to be no problem with it at this point.

I have about 150 sq ft and want 3 coats...........how many gallons?
You will get about 90 sq ft per quart, to do 3 coats (450 sq ft) it would be 5 quarts.
How do I figure out how much I will need? Applying on bright work in my cockpit- beach slats, floor boards, combing and handrails. My husband wants to buy a gallon but I think quarts may be easier to deal with even though more expensive in the long run....
I bought 2qts. for my project. I applied 3 coats of Cetol after stripping and sanding the companion way hatch and trim, 2 dorade boxes, cabin roof hand rails, and cap rail that ran completely around the hull deck joint of a C&C Landfall 35' sailboat. I used a total of one qt. I find that an open can of Cetol does not store well after it has been exposed to the air. A basic rule of thumb is to multiply the width times the length of the area to be finished and convert it to square feet. One qt. covers about 85 square feet. The finish has held up well.
You probably need a gallon anyway so don't have waste your time with quarts.
If the wood is somewhat dry it will be good to go ahead with a gallon since this will get soaked up quickly by dry wood. The shelf life is good even after opening so any leftovers should be useable.
Can Sikkens CetoL Marine be used on a new and bare Douglas Fir front door?and if so what color will the door be once 3-4 coats are applied?thank you,Brian
This is the best product I know of for a transparent type stain for exterior wood. I have done a number of Douglas fir doors with this product and they last, after 3 coats it gets kind of a golden Amber look and it has a nice shine to it.

I've only used it on my front porch's mahogany floor. It gets considerably darker but does not change colors.
Sikkens makes a product especially for doors.
on previously finished teak trim trim that has been extensively sanded / preped , is it necessary to use cetol marine IVA-300Q prior to using cetol marine gloss ??
I have used only Sikkens thinned with the recommended thinner and have had excellent success on sanded teak. I have not used IVA-300Q. Stan
I didn't and worked just fine. Don't know how it could be any better. I used cetol on a 50' sailboat for all the teak in 2012. This summer I added a new top coat. Lightly sanded before I added the new coat of cetol. Looks great. I'm on the Pacific Ocean with the Calif sun. Pretty harsh environment.
thank you for your reply chris
Thomas, Thank you for your information. Chris

another purchase of this great product
minimal brush marks
I bought a boat with gray weathered teak and figured it was time to give her some love! After a good sanding to get the ridged out and the gray off, I simply wiped the wood down with a damp cloth. After letting the wood dry thoroughly it was time to apply the first coat! The cetol goes on easily, and blends well making it easy to get an even coat. Make sure to tape up around the edges! Stray drops cleaned up without too much hassle with a little water and elbow grease. Alcohol or thinners might work better but didnt spill enough to warrant it. The hardest part is waiting 24 hours to put on the next coat because we had fun slapping it on! We used 2 coats of marine and 2 coats of gloss.
Great product, been using it for years
I use this product on the teak on my boat. It is easy to apply and lasts longer than varnish
North Canton ,Ohio
I will buy this product again.
I applied Sikkens Cetol Marine to a well weathered wooden deck. It had been treated, and linseed oil mix or commercial wood preserative had been applied, but none for several years. I can not, yet, speak to its durability. However, as to its application and immediate appearence, the result has been excellent. The first coat was applied on a very windy day, but the wind did not cause any problems. The viscosity is excellent. The varnish clings to the brush, yet spreads smoothly. It also readily sinks into cracks. It was a few days before I got to the second coat application, and I was able to see the good water proofing effect after just one coat. I anticipate a good, long lasting effect after the recommended three coats.
wonderful color, you'll like it
Easy to apply. The color is wonderful. Makes teak look great. Covers well.

use for outdoor kitchen?
works fine on boat brightwork so should work well in any wet, outdoor enviornment
Excellent Product Line
See my review of the companion product, Cetol Marine Gloss. This is the required undercoating for the Cetol Marine Gloss. It does contain pigment that will darken the golden color of your wood, so if you are concerned about that issue, check first on a donor piece of wood. They do sell a clear or near clear version of this product, but I wanted this one because it will keep UV light off the wood and keep the wood from changing color. Great product line, far superior to regular varnishes or other synthetics, in my opinion.
best product on the market for your woo
i have used this product for 7 yrs. i finally had to reorder another quart, because this product lasts longer than any other! goes on easily, dries faster, and its luster is teriffic! i would reccomend this to anyone with any type of wood, which is exposed to the elements year round.
Great for outdoor wood furniture!
Goes on easily and lasts four to five years before needing renewal coats on my mahogany and other outdoor wood furniture. Sikkens Cetol Marine has kept my furniture looking new for almost 20 years! Also makes removal of accumulateddirt and pollen very easy with Endust or Pledge.
