I am holding a truss head in my hand. It is 3/8 but how can I tell if it is number 8?
That's a question I would like answered myself. I do it by years of looking at them which is not very scientific.
Head dia. on a #8 truss head should be 21/64"Shank dia should be 9/64Google screw dimensions to find dimension tables, get a set of dial calipers to measure the screw.
You need to measure the thread diameter or the root diameter (the solid cylindrical part of the screw). You can search online for a table of standard screw sizes or screw hole sizes.Easier though if you have some known #8 screws of any length just compare the thread diameter, Or some #6 and #10 screws and see if this one is im between in size. Note. Machine screw thread will be a little different diameter from self tapping screws.
