MEKP is composed of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, a catalyst, added to polyester and vinyl resins.
When MEKP is mixed with the resin, the resulting chemical reaction causes heat to build up and cure or harden the resin.

i have a small repair to the gelcoat of my 20foot scout .I got the paint from scout but do not known how much mek peroxide to add to 2oz of the paint?
Undisclosed
You add 2-3 teaspoons of mekp catalyst per quart of gelcoat. Two teaspoons will give you a 15-20 minute gel time, and 3 teaspoons will give you 10 minutes (rated at about 77¥Ë_¥Ë_¥Ë_F). Depending on the temperature it will vary, here in RI I would use definitely use 3 teaspoons at this time of year, also in general to make sure that you get a proper full cure. Thank you.

What should be the standard resin(unsaturated polyester) hardner ratio? What is the viscosity of MEKP?
Mamunur Rashid
I'VE GOT TO SAY IT IS ABOUT THE SAME AS WATER
RODNEY MABERRY
The viscosity of the MEKP is relatively low, not quite as thin as water but only as viscous as a very light oil.Unfortunately, I was using this for waste treatment process and not for producing viable resin, so I can not help you with the ratio part of the question.
RON HARVEY
This is not an easy question to answer. The number of drops per ounce depends on the volume of resin being mixed and the thickness of the pour. I use 5 drops per ounce when pouring 2 - 3 ounces of resin. If you want to pour a thin layer ( 1/8") the number of drops must be increased. Here is a guide of drops to thickness:1/8" - 15 drops1/4" - 8 drops1/2" - 6 drops3/8" - 5 drops1 - 1/2" 4 dropsThe viscosity of MEKP is water thin. Be sure to mix in a well ventilated area and wear a fume respirator if mixing in your shop.Hope this helps. John

The ratio is dependent of the temperature. Optimal temperature for applications is 70 deg F. At that temp, 1 oz resin to 2 drops of Hardener, with a cure time of 10 minutes. At 60 deg F, it should 4 drops per 1 oz resin and will take about 30 minutes to harden. Below 60 degrees, I have found it eventually hardens, but does not bind to the repair surface. At 80 and above I use 1 drop/1 oz resin, but have to work really fast. Its best to plan your work, and act when the temp is optimal. This is applicable for resin only, or resin/cabosil mix. The viscosity of MEKP is like water, so it turns the gel from pasty to wet..

It all depends on how quickly you would like your mix to set. I mix my unpromoted resin with styrene to decrease viscosity and then I add just a little MEKP after stirring well. The MEKP is relatively thin (water-like) in viscosity. I want my samples to dry slowly over the course of an entire week, so I use very little. If you're going for a more traditional use (boats/coatings) I think you would use a lot more than I do. See the packaging for recommendations. Sorry not to be more help.

I am impressed with the companies concern and involvement with people and 'the bottom line' isn't only monetary. They freely give advice and I appreciate having the opportunity to tap their knowledge base, be it 'suggested products' or telephone conversation. Their prices are competitive.their variety of products are quality and delivery is prompt. I look forward to continuing involvement with this companies high standards and new products they offer in their catologs.
