TotalBoat White and Neutral Gelcoats

Isophthalic White and Neutral Gelcoats create a durable, shiny finish, and are available with & without wax additive.

Gelcoat with wax makes the final gelcoat layer cure to a hard sandable finish, with no wax paper or special tools needed.

Gelcoat without wax additive is ideal if you're laying up a mold for a new boat or a fiberglass part where you're laying down the gelcoat first, then applying more layers of resin and fiberglass on top. In this case, you don't want the gelcoat to cure completely.

Neutral gelcoat is better with coloring agents. White is more opaque with coloring agents.

MEKP is included as the catalyst. To thin, use styrene (sold separately).

Available in Quart and Gallon Kits, and a 5-Gallon size (resin and MEKP only) Wax additive also available for use with gelcoat without wax.

BONUS! Each Quart and Gallon size Kit order includes:

  • 1 Qt. size plastic mixing pot
  • 1 10" wooden stir stick
  • 1 pr. of large latex gloves
  • 2 plastic pipettes for transferring the MEKP hardener to the mixing pot

The gelcoat you are buying is an Isophthalic, NPG gelcoat with or without wax additive.

The gelcoat without wax is used for layups when you want the initial layer of gelcoat to remain tacky to the touch while you're laying reinforcement plies on top in order to create a strong chemical bond in the laminate. If you use unwaxed gelcoat as the finish coating, you must spray PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) over it or use wax paper or some other means to effect a proper cure.

The gelcoat with wax is used for an air dry post-applied application. The wax additive rises to the surface, making a film that creates an air barrier, allowing the final gelcoat layer to cure properly.

Mixing Instructions:

Mixing instructions depend on the temperature and preferable dry times. The higher percentage of catalyst, the faster it will dry. Air and surface temperature will also affect the drying of the gelcoat. The colder the air temperature, the higher the percentage of catalyst you should use. Do not go below 1/2% or above 2%.

Note on thinning: To thin, use styrene; acetone is also commonly used but is not recommended due to yellowing, orange peel & other side effects.

Catalyst Guideline

    Catalyst Percentage
  • 1/2% - (79-85 F)
Quart: 4-6 cc, Gallon: 23-26 cc, 5 Gallon: 110-130 cc
  • 1% - (72-78 F)
Quart: 8-12 cc, Gallon: 42-47 cc, 5 Gallon: 220-230 cc
  • 1 1/4% - (66-71 F)
Quart: 11-14 cc, Gallon: 55-60 cc, 5 Gallon: 275-285 cc
  • 1 1/2% - (61-65 F)
Quart: 13-16 cc, Gallon: 65-70 cc, 5 Gallon: 335-345 cc
  • 2% - (55-60 F)
Quart: 17-21 cc, Gallon: 86-94 cc, 5 Gallon: 450-460 cc
Tips
  • 1 mL = 1 cc
  • If using a wooden mixing stick, place the stick in the resin before adding catalyst so the wood doesn't absorb the catalyst.
  • Directions for Wax Additive (sold separately)

Wax additive is a mixture of paraffin and styrene. When adding it to gelcoat, you must also add the MEKP catalyst/hardener. Wax additive is added to the gelcoat on the final layer of a wet layup to create a tack-free surface that sands easily before applying the finish coating. Wax additive is not needed when additional layers or gelcoat are applied on top. Note that in temperatures below 70°F, the paraffin can solidify in the container. Place the container in the sun or in front of a lamp to liquefy. USE CAUTION - WAX ADDITIVE IS FLAMMABLE!

Wax additive is available in 1 oz. and 4 oz. bottles. Refer to the table below for how much wax additive to add to gelcoat without wax. Too much wax additive will result in fish eye and other undesirable results.

Approximate Gel Time and Catalyst Instructions @ 70°F

    • Medium Gel: 15-20 minutes - 2 Teaspoons/Quart (10cc)
    • Fast Gel: 10 minutes - 3 Teaspoons/Quart (15cc)
    • Add no more than 4 Teaspoons of MEKP catalyst per quart

comes with no directions and no instructions, does don't tell you what you can delute it with or how to be applied such as air gun, or roller. No mixing instructions execpt don't use more that 2 or 4 teaspoons per quart. Did not work or dry well in large areas, but did work well when applied with a brush in small spot repairs. Wish it had alot more directions and what you could mix with it to thin it out for a sprayer.

Worked much better than I expected.

Comments about TotalBoat White and Neutral Gelcoats:

I used the White Gelcoat with wax, because the repair that I was doing had to be exposed to air. I figured I would have problems with it since the weather I had to apply it in was not ideal. To my surprise it set up and cured perfectly. No soft spots at all. I love the stuff.

I was a bit overly cautious on the amt of hardener that I added. (10 drops to 1/10th quart). it took 3 hours to cure but turned out just the same...FYI

Comments about TotalBoat White and Neutral Gelcoats:

JD givese conflicting instructions on mixing MEPK depending on where you look. The gel coat bottle says 2 tsp per quart. Ok, but what if I need to mix 2 ounces? The website instructions caution against exceeding 2% (what would happen if you add too much?). Then, the Gel Coat video part 2 says never add more than 30% MEPK!!! I get that cooler temps will require more MEPK, but what's the deal!!? JD provides no good resource to help the noob use the product if they have tool and shop skills but zero experience with gel coat.

Was close to 98 Bayliner off white, once if I can figure out to get it closer to that color, it works well any way you like your soup.

Comments about TotalBoat White and Neutral Gelcoats:

Used this to gelcoat back side of travel trailer with tons of spider cracks and a bit of fiberglass damage. Easy to mix. My results were average because settings on air equip were off. I finished with a foam roller. The age of the trailer dictated a perfect finish was not in order. Included wax made drying time < 24hrs as it was abt 75 sq ft. Overall happy as this was my first time using gelcoat.
