Shoulder eye bolts allow you to lift or place the load at an angle. Eye bolts without a shoulder should really only have the load directly in line with the fastener to avoid breakage. The addition of the shoulder supports the load as it comes in from an angle. Remember to orient the ring in-line with the slings--if the load is sideways--otherwise you may bend the eyebolt. Various sizes available in S/S.

how far off surface is eyelet?
That depend on how deeply you insert it. The eyelet can sit directly on the surface or some distance above it.
I bought the one with the flange, but it's at another location right now. As I recall, the tangent of the outer diameter is buried just about at the flat of the flange where it would mount into the work, so the inside diameter is tucked in nicely and produces a flush-as-possible mount.
Can you provide full dimensions on the eye bolts? I'm interested in the 3/8" x 4 1/2" bolt, but I need to know how big the eye is.
On the 3/8" x 2 1/2" eye bolt, what is the length of the threaded portion and what is the length of the shoulder portion? In other words, how much of the shaft is threaded and how much of it is shoulder?
I have a 1/4 x 2" shoulder eye bolt from you (eye has rough chrome finish over sand casting?). It has 1/2" of unthreaded shaft and 1-1/2" threads. I have a second unit in smooth stainless, which might be from you, or from West Marine (tagged as a Wichard product) which is 1/4 x 2-1/2". The second unit has 1/4" of unthreaded shaft and 2-1/8" of threads. I don't find a 3/8" eyebolt here, so I might have returned it to you or applied it someplace I cannot recall. Hope this helps!David
It's been some time since I installed them, but as I recall, about 1-1/2 inch was threaded and at least 1 inch was shoulder. If you call tech support at Jamestown they should be able to give exact dimensions. -Tom
