TotalBoat Polyester Fairing compound is a lightweight cosmetic filler ideal for repairing minor dents, dings, and scratches in fiberglass and gelcoat. Fill pinholes, print-through, low spots, grinding/sanding marks & other surface defects. This high quality fairing material chemically bonds with polyester resins for stronger layups and maximum gelcoat adhesion.
It's creamy consistency is easy to spread smoothly, and won't sag on vertical surfaces. Low styrene content means less odor and minimal shrinkage. Best of all, it sets up quickly and sands easily.

Great for Filling, Fairing, and Repairing Composite Surfaces
TotalBoat Polyester Fairing Compound is easy to work with, easy to sand, and provides optimal strength. It's ideal for making quick and easy cosmetic repairs to fiberglass and gelcoat surfaces. Just mix with MEKP catalyst, apply easily with a putty knife, wait while it sets up quickly, then sand. No need to worry about measuring the exact amounts of resin, filler, and wax—we've done it for you!
This lightweight polyester cosmetic filler is primarily for use in tooling and repair applications as a fairing material only, and is not designed for high-strength repairs. For structural repairs requiring strength and dimensional stability, you can use TotalBoat Polyester Structural Repair Putty, a high-strength, fibrous polyester putty for filling larger cracks & voids. After it cures, apply TotalBoat Polyester Fairing Compound over the repaired area, let it cure, then sand to achieve an extremely smooth surface ready for gelcoat or paint.
TotalBoat Polyester Fairing Compound is for use above the waterline only, and can be overcoated with gelcoat or paint. If used below the waterline, it must be overcoated with TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer, to prevent water damage.

Polyester resins have a limited shelf life and will, over time, harden in the container without the addition of catalyst. Shelf life is dependent on a number of factors such as product formulation and storage conditions. As a general rule, the shelf life for uncatalyzed polyester resins should be up to 6 months when stored in dry, cool conditions below 70°F. Warm to above 60°F before use.

I was told that I could use this product above & below the water line. After applying the product and sanding, I could gelcoat over without any other steps needed. True or false? I turned the boat upside down to work on the bottom. I'm repairing along the keel of boat. Which is fiberglass and stainless steel. I also was told this product would work well over as long as I sanded first with 60-80 grit sand paper and then gel coated. Also could I just get more MEK? To count 14 drops for 1 once of compound. I've used a half bottle of MEK to 1/4 of a gallon of compound. Just working on the transom I replaced. I'm just confirming everything before I do all this work incorrectly. Thanks
Hi, I recently bought some of this same stuff.before I applied I sanded with some 40 grit to get a rough profile.and yes you can directly gel coat over, that's what I did. I would make sure you use good filling procedures and do more than a few thinner coats in lieu of one thicker.sand your final profile with 80 grit and gel away.I had no issues.
This product is to be used above the water line ONLY.? Your projectrequires Total boat epoxy with a a silica filler.Good luck,Jack
We do sell more MEKP, but that seems like an awful lot of MEKP for 1/4 of a gallon of compound. Please call one of our techs at (800) 497-0010, it sounds like there are a lot of variables in what you are trying to achieve, and depending on the type of boat, keel, etc. When using this product, you can apply it a little shallow (by 1/16"-1/8") and before it has cured apply gelcoat over it to form a chemical bond with the gelcoat. Then wet sand and buff.

Can this be used over epoxy?
You can use this product for light fairing over epoxy, but the surface must be abraded to give the Polyester Fairing Compound some 'tooth' to adhere to.

My boat has an epoxy based paint surface, two part paint on it. There are some cracks in the paint, some chipping. Will this product work to fill and smooth the surface? How well does it stand up ? The hull is ferro-cement.
An epoxy based fairing material should be used to fix this problem. It is also more important to verify that it is just the paint failing and not caused by another issue. This Polyester Fairing Compound holds up great, but any fairing material, regardless of resin type needs to be protected from the UV.

Still a fan of Total Boat products
Got too hot here before I had a chance to use it. Today's high will probably be about 100 decrees. It might cool down for a short time before summer really hits. But it may be October before I can finish this project. Notwithstanding that, I am totally sold on Jamestown and Total Boat products.
