WEST System Pigments are epoxy-based liquid colorants used to tint the epoxy mixture to provide an even color base for the final finish system. The colored surfaces also tend to highlight flaws and imperfections. Cured, pigmented epoxy surfaces are not a final finish surface, but require an additional opaque or UV filter coating for ultraviolet protection. Add to the mixed resin/hardener at a rate of approximately one teaspoon of pigment to 8 fl. oz. of epoxy. More pigment will increase opaqueness and mixture viscosity. One 4 fl. oz. bottle will tint approximately 2/3 gal. of epoxy.
Pigments are available in your choice of White, Gray, or Black colors.

I'm building a bar top out of #2 cherry, which has some relatively tight knots in it. I'd like to keep them because they add character. I'm wondering whether the tinted epoxy will work as a filler? I'll be staining the cherry to a typical medium/dark brown/red and then top coating it with spar varnish. Does this sound like a good plan? Other suggestions?
Many customers us a clear epoxy to fill knot holes after the stain so that it shows through clear, they may be a better solution than trying to match color.

Can West 501 coloring agent be used to color neutral polyester gelcoat or do I need a special gelcoat coloring agent?
For Gel Coat you need a gel coat coloring agent. Do not use the West System pigment for epoxy.

Can this be used to tint gelcoat?
I have no idea. Sorry.
I do not work with gelcoat. But I believe the answer is: No. Tints are only for use with West System 105 Resin. You could confirm by contacting Technical Specialist Tom Pawlak at West System in Michigan.
How much tint will I have to use on a 34 ft. sail boat? I want the tint as an indicator for sanding depth which will be applied as the last coat of three used as a water barrier.

The answer is based on how much epoxy you will be mixing to cover the boat. A little pigment goes a LONG way! Pigment ratios as per West Systems guidelines for white or gray pigment: 1 teaspoon of pigment per 8 fluid ounces of mixed epoxy; or 4 fl ounces of pigment can be added to 1-1/2 gallons of mixed epoxy. West Systems also states: Coloring agents can be added to the mixed epoxy up to 5% by volume with minimal effect on the epoxy's strength. Now go have a successful project, Rod.
That was not the answer to the question, just a different solution which does not include West epoxy.

Tinting what? They sell interprotect 200 in grey and white. That is how you control putting down barrier coat layers which you dont sand off. Then over that you put colored ablative or other bottom coat. Next year put a different color bottom coat on for instance do 2 coats red then next year sand lightly and do 2 coats black. The year after that you can do a more aggressive sanding to the red and reapply black to keep coatings from build in up.I used the pigment for gel coat above water line
Great coloring agent for epoxy resins
Just a small amount of the white coloring agent was enough to get good final color in some thickened epoxy I used for patching a few small holes in some gelcoat. Definitely recommend!
