I have 6 X 220ah house batteries and two 120ah alternators. I also have a Victron Quattro, where and how many of these do I need?

It depends on how your system is configured. On our boat, each alternator charges a START battery. The Cyrix is downstream from that battery. When it is full, the Cyrix opens and allows the charge to flow to the house bank. Same thing happens when we plug into shore power. So you may need two. If you have twin engines......
Generally you will use one of these, with the appropriate current rating, to separate battery banks so that the discharge of one bank will not affect the other. The most common case is the house batteries and the starter batteries. The way the device works is that it closes a relay connecting the two banks when the voltage on either side gets up to charging voltage. So if you are charging (from either side) it will connect the banks together and charge both banks. If you are not charging, it separates the two banks.

I am going to wire my boat such that the alternator charges the crank battery directly, then place this unit between the crank and house batteries to direct current from crank to house once the crank is charged. My question is: when all electronics are turned off, the only live connection from the batteries will be between themselves, with this unit in the middle. Should I be concerned that the batteries will attempt to equalize if one is charged less than the other, or will this unit act as an "off switch" when there is no active current applied to the crank battery?

My Victron Cyrix works only as a "one way" street. Once the start battery reaches a certain voltage, the Cyrix "closes" the circuit, allowing the charge to reach the house batteries. The batteries do not equalize when the battery charger or alternator is disengaged.
House boat has a bank of 4 batteries for the house2 outboards each with its on battery. Currently they are totally separate systems. Can and how would I use a combiner to charge the house battery bank when the outboard batteries are charged up from running the boat leaving alternators from both engines to charge the house batteries?
Hi, Jeff. I have a number of these combiners on my 53' trawler. They work! After the engine start battery is full from the starting load, these combiners' circuits "close", and begin charging the house batteries on our boat. We love it because they charge our inverter, making it possible to use 110VAC outlets while we run. When we arrive at an anchorage, our house batteries are fully charged!Also consider the Blue Seas ACR....it does the exact same thing....
I have almost a similar setup up with four house batteries but only one "very large" alternator belted off the engine. In either case you would use four (4) battery combiners one for each of your house batteries. You have a couple of options as far as wiring/charging. You can have each outboard charge two of your house batteries by wiring the "input" of two (2)combiners together and connecting the output of the battery combiner to two of your house batteries. Just repeat this setup for your other two house batteries. The other setup would be to wire all four (4) battery combiner inputs together and through a separate A/B battery switch you can switch the combiner inputs to either the Left or Right outboard or parallel for charging. The battery combiners automatically engage when it sees the higher voltage from your alternator and then disengage when the charging voltage drops when you shutdown your outboards.
Yes. That's exactly how mine was wired. only to the engine battery. When it was full, the current flowed to the house. BTW, Blue Seas has outstanding technical support and will talk you through the installation. I'd probably go that way....
Hi Robert thanks for you help another question The combiners or ACR can they be installed to only read engine battery voltage and when that battery is fully charged the house batteries get charged. I see they also can be wired to the alternator for a signal but I don't want to do that.
If you want to keep them separate, you would want two ACRs. One between the house bank and each outboard battery. That way the outboard batteries stay charged up from the shore power charging.
How do I determine what combiner i need Do I add up the amps of all battery's ?
No as you can only charge up to the maximum output of your battery charger or engine alternator whichever has the higher output. So if your engine alternator is the standard 55amp output then the smallest unit (120amp)would be just fine. Typically you should never charge any battery more than 20% of its rated capacity. An 8D for example which is typically rated at 245 amps should be charged at a maximum rate of charge of 48amps. When you go above that then you could "boil" your battery and reduce its service life (number of charges) greatly.

If you combine several batteries, you need several Cyrixes. One single Cyrix will not combine more than 2 batteries. Best to combine battery #1 with Battery #2, then go from BÂ’Â¢??2 to B#3, from B#3 to B#4 etc. So all batteries will be charged in sequence, one after the other. Once B#1 is charged up, the Cyrix will connect B#2, and so on. So you need to match the Cyrix to your charger. If you have a 100A charger the small 120A Cyrix works fine. If your charging source (or all your combined charging sources) provide more than 120A, you need the bigger Cyrix. What you DRAW from the batteries does not matter. The Cyrix will NOT combine batteries for discharging. Hope this helps.

You can't tell until you measure the voltage rise on (or amp flow with a clamp meter into) the second battery. These little combiners work very well. I trust them since I checked their correct operation after installation, and will only check again if I have serious reason to doubt it.
Keeps both batteries charged! Perfect function, but flimsy mounting tab and only one mounting screw.

Form factor could be larger to accommodate off the shelf pre-made battery cables. I believe there may be a kit that includes cables; that would be a plus.
