Thinners and Solvents
what ratio do you thin gelcoat to spray in a hvlp gun?
I have a recipie that I use for spraying gel coat. I use a HVLP gun set anywhere from 10 psi to 40 psi depending on the thickness of the coat that i want . What i do is spray about 8 oz at a time because that is all I am able to spray with out it setting up in the gun. it does tend to leave some spray over lap lines but you will be sanding them away anyhow. so I mix 8 oz of gel and I add about an ounce of styrene to the gel coat I mix that for about 1-2 min so it is mixed in really well Then I add about a teaspoon of hardener. (if it is hot out cut that in half and by hot I mean over 80 degrees) I then mix this concotion for about 1 min and then pour into the gun and shoot it on. this has worked really well for me and I hope that it helps you out.
Styrene Resin Thinner
A must for gelcoat thinning and use with air equipment. Smallest quantity was a quart that far exceeded my needs but it will be on the shelf when next needed.
