Closed Base Cleats
On the brass closed base cleats, 4" model 1)What is the clearance from the underside at the tip to the mounting suface?2)What is the height from the mounting surface to the top?Tks Andre
3/4 " from the underside at the tip to the mounting surface 1" from the mounting surface to the top
What are the dimensions of the base?
Sorry, these were for a customer and have long since left my shop.
There are hanging in a vacation home and I don't have access to them to take dimensions. From memory they are about 1.5-2" at the base.
On the cleats we purchased, the base is 2" top to bottom and 3/4" wide, the screw holes are 15/16ths on center.
I am interested in this model of cleat. I am looking for a cleat that has mounting holes 1 1/4 center to center. Can anyone tell me which size that might work? I am thinking 4 inch. Thanks.
Unfortunately I mounted the cleats to a home made project...I don't have any left to measure. I used them on a 12' canoe, bow and stern, they also double as handles for transport to the water.sorry!
I purchased the three inch cleat, and have since given the boat to my son in law, so I can not tel you the measurement
To set those fasteners should the hole be drilled or tapped?
Drilled; if I understand the question correctly.
I did not use them on a boat either...
Hi Buck,If you are mounting these cleats on a wood deck, then I'd use #7 flat head brass screws and drill a pilot hole with a 5/64th drill.Hope that helps, Doug
Buck D,I bought those cleats for entirely different application. I am building my own 8ft long 2 feet wide and 2 feet high media cabinet. These will be used as handles on both sides for easy lifting. And I plan to put brass nut and bolt through the sides. The smaller version of these cleats will be the handles for my cabinet doors, fastened in similar manner.I am sure it did not help you much, not being a boat owner.SincerelyRamesh
I want the 3 in. cleats. Which fastener should I use?
It depends on your application. Mine was purely cosmetic. If yours is functional, it needs to go thru the substrate and into the framework.
Hi Buck,It really depends on where you are attaching the cleat. In my case I was going through a 1/8th plywood top and placed blocks below that to make up about 3" total depth.(a Home made canoe). If you are using it on a side rail or a thick solid spot on the boat.....I would think 1.5 " (or more) of fastener below the bottom of cleat should do it. If your situation is fiberglass or other composit material I can help you there too.
I used the "3" cleats on an 8' dingy. I think the 4" would be the smallest to use on any boat. jim
Do these cleats need to be polished to keep their shine? If they tarnish, what color/texture does the tarnish take on? Many thanks.
George E These cleats do not tarnish. A soft cloth once in a while is all you will need.jim walther
what size brass wood screws are required for the 4" bronze cleat and what is the cost per screw?
3" requires #6 FH, Both 4" and 5" require #12 FH
beautiful piece! Looks great on project.
I used the 9" bronze cleat for a flagpole cleat. It looks beautiful. I'll be purchasing more in the future , including some smaller cleats for smaller flagpoles.
I would buy again, and highly recommend.
Excellent material, workmanship, and appearance.
Exceptionally Well-Crafted Product
Used the brass sea-dogs to give a very finished look to a handmade wooden tray filled with wine corks that had been set in place with resin. Adds a great way to carry the tray!
Very Elegant Looking Product.
I used this product on something entirely different project. Wanted to give my self designed high tech media cabinet, which will be in a room which consists many authentic real brass nautical instruments. So these Brass cleats give a very elegant look, so far I have bought twelve 3 inch cleats and 4 large five inch cleats. Once the room is finished. My wife wants custom end tables with doors meaning more brass cleats as door handles. Wish Jamestown carried more nautical items. So I can come up with more ideas.

Add a touch of class
We used these to tie back the cords on our blinds. They are much more attractive than others we have seen. They also match our door hardware.

Ask a lot of questions about what screw size to use. They are not clear on this for length and will not give you a good recommendation for the proper screw.
