Torqeedo Motor & Battery Details
The 503 features watertight motor components to protect sensitive electronics against moisture intrusion or complete immersion. For safety, the motor automatically shuts off when the magnetic key on the remote throttle is removed. It's a good idea to attach this key to your wrist or life jacket.
In very hot weather, both the 503 and the 1003 may run under reduced power after running over 30 minutes at full throttle. This is a temperature protection mode to prevent battery overheating.
Torqeedo upgraded both Travel motors to a new lithium manganese system for less weight and better performance. These new LIMA batteries take 15 hours to fully charge from empty to full. To maximize their service life, minimize battery exposure to high temperatures and do not store fully charged for long periods. When not in use, keep out of the sun and store in a cool place. For long term storage, a charge status of about 50% is optimal. By following these guidelines, your Travel motor's battery should last 6 to 10 years.
Battery Charging: The battery may be solar charged while in use. Use the included connector with the PowerFilm or other solar charger with a voltage rating between 24 and 60 V and max current of 4 amps. Using on-board power source to charge requires an inverter to convert voltage to between 100 and 240 V.
The solar panel will charge a totally dead battery in a few days. Plugged in, the panel will even run a motor with a dead battery (albeit a reduced efficiency).

Measure your transom, how much clearance do you need. I have a small dinghy, use short shaft. You can also trim these up a bit using pins. I bring my dinghy to beach, so the less draft the better.

Stupid question but have to ask! How does reverse work on these units with and without the remote throttle (do you have to spin it around like a small gas outboard)? Also can you lock it down so it holds straight and I could steer with the tiller? Thanks!
The throttle handle turns counter clockwise for forward, clockwise for reverse.
Reverse works by twisting the throttle backwards, and yes this outboard can be locked down. We use this torqueedo on a small sailboat locked in place and use the tiller to steer unless we want to turn tighter, then i use the outboard to steer with. This is a very good little outboard for our boat, not super fast for a 700 lb boat, but way better than just a trolling motor. It averages about 4 knots at half throttle across the wind.
The throttle (handle on the tiller) turns both clockwise and counter-clockwise, for forward and reverse... and, of course, prop goes forward and back. hope this is helpful.
There is no 'remote throttle' supplied. The tiller arm is the throttle, and it rotates like a motorcycle handlebar throttle. However, unlike a bike, the tiller handle has a center off and rotates both ways: anti-clockwise is forward, clockwise is reverse. You do not have to spin it to go backwards - but you do have to lock the unit so it can't kick up, if you want to use reverse at any speed other than very slow.A locking pin is supplied so you can fix it in a straight-ahead position and use an external tiller.

does it work. I have a 10 ft Trinka dinghy. Speed with motor as compared to rowing and practical distance?
We use a 2.2m Avon (about 9 ft) and it will comfortably do 4 knots with both of us aboard. It will travel at 2 kts for sightseeing using almost no juice.
This is a terrific solution for a recreational fishing & sightseeing dingy such as our Portland Pudgy. No messy oil or fuel & easy to stow away under our camper. Easy setup and overnight charge provides plenty of time on the water.

Great Little Electric Outboard
Great little outboard. Used to move a 14' sailboat across lakes when the wind dies down. Its relatively quiet, lightweight, and at medium throttle lasts the 3-4 hours specified, while moving the boat (approx 700 lbs.) about 3 mph at 1/2 throttle.
